So my theory, that has not been confirmed, is that “My Tears Ricochet” is about her stolen lullabies and each line of the first chorus was taken from a song from each stolen album!! “i didn’t have it in myself to go with grace”- Red (State of Grace) “you’re the hero flying around saving face”- Speak Now (Superman) “and if I'm dead to you, why are you at the wake?”- rep (LWYMMD/old Taylor is dead) “cursing my name”- Fearless (The Way I Loved You) “wishing I stayed”- 1989 (All You Had to Do Was Stay) “look at how my tears ricochet”- Debut (Teardrops on my Guitar)

Hello. You’re absolutely right. For her, the song was about her former label owner, Scott Borschetta, who Swift considered something like a second father. - “You wear the same same jewels that I gave you as you bury me. - “You hear my stolen lullabies.” - “I can go anywhere I want, just not home.” To cite a few of the lyrics pointing to the masters situation. 😊 I think the beauty of it, though, is that it’s written in a way that other people can interpret the song in a way that relates to them- even if they don’t know what it was about for Swift. Of course that’s true for all good art. Enjoyed your reaction. 😊

@@HPReact yes and he sold her masters to Scooter Braun, someone who she doesn't have a good relationship with.
@HiSummerWasHere10 ай бұрын
It’s even more than that: he essentially discovered her, and she (as a teenager) trusted him enough to be the first artist to sign to the new label he was creating. Then she was the most successful artist on that label, she made him rich, and made the label successful enough that he was able to ask a huge price for it when he was ready to sell it. They had always had an overall positive relationship across six albums, but when she was signing with a new label and his was for sale, she asked for the option to purchase her masters back and he said only if she re-signed to make six more albums, and with each new one she could earn an old one. That felt like a huge betrayal to her. Then, knowing that she wanted access to those masters and intended to negotiate for them, he sold them to Scooter Braun, with whom he knew she had a negative relationship (because of Braun’s professional relationships with friends and acquaintances. She didn’t like how he treated his clients). That’s why she’s using death and a funeral as a metaphor in this song…it felt like the death of a close, critical, familial relationship to her.

SO this song is about Scott Borchetta, the owner of the label she was on until 2018. Scott Borchetta signed her as his first artists on his label BMR in 2005 after seeing her perform at the bluebird cafe and she made that label a huge success and he became like a father figure to her. Taylor wanted to own the masters to her work ( because she wrote all of the songs) and for 15 years she begged him to let her own her work. In 2019 she left the label to go sign a contract with republic/UMG because they would let her own her future masters. Scott then instead of letting her buy them, sold her masters to a man who has been bullying Taylor since she was a teenager because she refused to work with Scooter and he really wanted her on his roster. Scooter bought them because he thought that would force her to be under his control, but Taylor instead decided to re-record her first 6 albums to regain her masters. Scott had been around for all the horrendous bullying Taylor had recieved from Scooter through the years and he knew selling them to him would be the worst betrayal, because he used to hate him too, but did it anyway because he was angry and wanted to hurt her. Scott also spent so much time gaslighing her in the press Hence the "If I am dead to you why are you at the wake?" line. He used to tell her that he was never going to be a person who valued money before music and that right should always win, hence the "You turned into your worst fears" line. Scooter has never worked with Taylor.

Thanks for explaining this in greater detail. Didnt Scooter Braun represent Kanye West, who treated Taylor worse than anyone else? So pleased to hear that after the release of the first 4 of 6 of the Taylor's Version Album, that allowed Taylor to reclaim her work, Scooter is no longer in the Music Industry, and Scott Borchetta then sold Big Machine. Of the three, Taylor is the only one left standing, in all her righteous glory! ❤ It would be w onderful if the company owned by Disney, who bought the rights to Taylor's original 6 albums, offered to sell Taylor her work. They must know Taylor will not work with them, as Scooter Braun would benefit monetarily.

"I didn't have it in myself to go with grace" is one of my absolute favourite lyrics!!! It makes me think of how many times, as women, especially, we are expected to just accept things with good grace and a smile on our face. If we get angry or respond negatively, we're seen as problematic or irrational. People just expected her to be 'ok' with what happened because that's 'just the way it is' in the music industry, and she was like, no, I don't accept this, this is not ok. I don't have it within myself to just let this go, I have to speak out.

It’s one of her best written songs and rather than descriptive of actual facts, it’s more metaphorical except maybe for the line “you used to tell I was brave” which also cuts deep because it shows how it was almost a father daughter relationship.

But the instrumentals on the album are really not to be missed they are so beautiful and really add to the overall feeling the songs.

She may write songs based on her own life, but she wants listeners to relate to it in their own way. So she very rarely lets people know what the song is about, or confirms theories. But she doesn't go out of her way to hide it either. Some of her songs may have a touch of real life drama in them, but are largely filled in with bits that aren't directly connected. Just good for the song.

The thing that infuriates me the most about the Scott Borchetta situation is that when Taylor begged to buy her masters, her former label, who she had left at this time, tried to trap her in a continued relationship by telling her that if she came back to them she had the opportunity to "earn" back her masters one album at a time. So for each new album she released, she'd earn back one of her "stolen lullabies." It's so manipulative and gross how they act like they are doing her this huge favor, when they were just trapping her in a situation that would never end.

You are correct, she wrote this song to Scott borchetta when he sold her music catalog to scooter Braun, a man Scott knew had ill will toward Taylor and knew he would restrict Taylor’s use of her own music. And in fact is the reason she wasn’t allowed to use her own music in the documentary Miss Americana. Her stolen lullaby’s are those songs. The jewels she gave him are her songs. She always referred to her songs as jewels and her albums as her children.

She calls her songs “her babies” because she’s written all of them from her personal experiences, making the “my stolen lullabies” verse so powerful. Scooter Braun sold them to Scott Borchetta. It has to be mentioned that he was an influential person who helped Kanye and Kim to torture Taylor, going on stage and causing the scene at her first VMA’s at 17 years old, Kim/Kanye and the internet of trolls called her a snake about the infamous phone call that Kanye and Kim edited to make it sound like Taylor gave her approval to be called a B (female dog), and when Taylor said she didn’t, no one believed her because of the highly edited phone call that Kim released. Later on, maybe a year, the entire call was released and it showed that Taylor was telling the truth. It really hurt Taylor because she prides herself on being a “good girl”. She says so in the Miss Americana documentary. After the phone call scandal, her pain and depression caused her to disappear for a year. No one saw her. No one heard from her. While she was gone (that’s what she thought people wanted), she worked on herself. Music is therapy for her. Taylor came back stronger and better than ever with “Reputation”. You will be able to see a completely new version of Taylor’s writing and confidence in Reputation. It’s remarkable how she continues to reinvent herself and make such personal records that resonate with most of her fans. WE believed her, but Kim and Kanye even went on TV shows to make her look worse on purpose. She used to look up to Kanye. Now she says “I don’t like you” flat out in Look What You Made Me Do. There’s so much in that one song. Geez. She got all of the dirt out on everybody that backstabbed her. It’s a work of art. There are “what you missed” KZbin videos on that one song because there’s just no way one “non-obsessed Swiftie” person could catch everything. LOL. Great job, guys!! I enjoy your reactions. You aren’t afraid of letting the song take you where it’s meant to go. Her lyricism is so poetic and powerful that she can touch a wide range of people. ❤

No clinkers. Even songs I didn’t like years ago have found their way into my playlists. I am not as big of a fan of her country music but that’s because I’m just not into that kind of song, not because her songs aren’t as good. Also, I’m 50, I started listening to Taylor swift passively through my daughter, it wasn’t until Taylor had matured that her songs began speaking to me. Once Taylor really dove head first I to poetry is when her music started to clutch my soul. I’d say the album lover and beyond are when I became a Taylor swift fan independent of my kids. I would wager money that the album she is dropping on May 19 will be my all time favorite. Its song list and album word-art are dripping in literary devices from the romantic era of poetry. Which is a sort of milestone for her, as she’s writes about in the song the lake’s, that she name drops Wordsworth. I’m having fun drawing lines of conjecture between the album’s songs and word-art to references in Lyrical Ballads by Wordsworth and Coleridge. The poem, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and her song The Albatross, for example. I can’t wait to hear these songs! 🤩

Scott Borchetta was her manager. He “discovered” her. Really, he had no other artists and had just been canned from another big label. He wanted to start his own label. Taylor (and her parents) helped him do that. She was his first artist, I think. Definitely his most notable artist. He helped launch her career. She and Scooter, famously, DID NOT get along (he’s a bully), prior to the sale of her entire discography. When it all happened, She had only an inkling that something big was about to happen. It was time for her to “re-up” her contract. Scott B. and her “team” were trying to pull one over on her. She asked if she could buy all her masters directly from Scott. He said, if you re-sign with us we will let you buy back one album at a time… all you have to do is put out new music. For every new album you put out, one of your previous masters will belong to you. Meanwhile, Scooter (the buyer of her old label) had been spending his money, collecting “pop-stars” (Ariana, Bieber, Demi Lovato, Tori Kelly…). He wanted to own Taylor and her masters, so he could control her career. She’s too smart. She said, “nope.” And she left. Because she wrote all her own lyrics, the music legally belonged to her. Hence, the re-recording of her first six albums. Taylor’s Versions. Fans stopped streaming her music, so he wouldn’t make money. Personally, I got a boombox for X-Mas that year & started only listening to her music on CD. 😂 Then, she made a deal with iHeart Radio, where they would only play the official Taylor’s Version of all her old music. That was amazing! It really is sad. He did her so dirty. She looked up to him and trusted him for so long. They made each other successful! Then, he sold her out. 😵 She has said, he had 300,000,000 reasons why he did it. Ouch! Tears Ricochet, indeed. It amazes me how she can take strife and turn it into something beautiful! It must have been so painful. She used it as fuel. She really is a Phoenix ✨🧚♀️✨

Hello! Love your videos! Thanks for reacting to her work. ❤ Well, if you want to know about not so great songs from Taylor, I might suggest one that is controversial in the fandom: ME!. Half of the fandom hates it and the other half thinks it's only "okay" compared to Taylor's standard of work. Like, we know she can do better. Another one that some fans don't like is: Stay Stay Stay, it's a happy cute song, some people think it sounds childish. I personally like Stay Stay Stay, but I do agree that it's a bit too bubbly and repetitive.

Originally, the lyrics were a bit of a head-scratcher 🤔 for me trying to imagine a fitting scenario. What gives "My Tears Ricochet" so much more impact is knowing the backstory that several other comments detailed. I would add that the "jewels" 💎 are a metaphor for her masters 📀 -- last year her store merch included a jeweled (not real jewels) bracelet having each jewel's color corresponding to each of her albums. And I'd add that the "I didn't have it in myself to go with grace" is about her decision to go public when trying to buy her masters in a clean deal -- a deal he would make with anyone else -- not the deal that he insisted upon from her that included 1 new album for each old master (so 6 new albums!). Several times in the interview segment Taylor Swift said "it's a song about...", but if she said "it's a song about Scott Borschetta" -- this would have really helped me! 😂 The backstory makes the lyrics' metaphors fit together perfectly. Taylor Swift was born to be a songwriter, singer, and performer.

Of course you will hear the background about Taylor and her masters but this song also brilliantly describes a messy divorce. It’s so painful. I have a playlist of about 20 favorite Taylor songs that gets edited as she releases new music. But even as a major Swiftie I have a very long list of songs I think are terrible. I don’t think an artist can create so prolifically at such a high standard and not have some big misses.

This song is primarily about the betrayal of her music lable and producer, Scooter Braun. It does encompass other similar events in everyone’s life. It is not my fav but it is one of her more important statements about the trauma of betrayal and how karma”my tears ricochet” always repays the abuser. Love your TS comments. Just have some fun w the video “ The MAN” it goes after the misogyny she has faced in her career. It’s another touchstone for her fans.

Scott Broschetta was her label owner (not producer) with whom she signed as a teenager for 6 albums. He knew how much damage Scooter Braun did to Taylor (they never worked together but he was kind of the insigator behind her cancellation in 2016), yet Scott sold her catalouge to Scooter.
@yara550210 ай бұрын
This is not about Scooter Braun, it´s about Scott Borchetta. Scooter has never worked with Taylor, he has just spent years bullying her for not wanting to work with him. Scott borchetta signed Taylor in 2005 and was his first artist on his label and he was like a father figure to her. Scott then sold her masters to her 6 first albums to Scooter when Taylor wanted to leave the label.

This is not related to Taylor (although I love these reactions), but I would like to recommend a very different artist. His name is Ren Gill (goes by Ren) and he is absolutely phenomenal. He provides a perspective that I've never seen in the music industry, and that connects with people in varying walks of life. I recommend him to just about every reaction channel I come across because I believe his music and his story deserve to be heard by anyone willing to listen. Most people discover him through his song "Hi Ren" which is definitely the best introduction to him, but to fully understand the depth of his talent you need to dive head first into the rabbit hole. The following are songs that I believe capture who he is and his talent the best: "The Tale of Jenny and Screech" "Chalk Outlines" "For Joe" "How to be me" "Sick Boi" "Murderer" "Seven Sins" "Dumb King Come (King Dotta Diss)" "Money Game (1,2, and 3)" and his most recent releases "Fred again Mashup" "Back on 74/Message in a Bottle Retake". Also some of the cover songs from his busking sessions with his band The Big Push: "I Shot the Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip hop" "Englishman in New York" "Bongo Bong". Sorry about the novel, I am just very passionate about Ren, and I think you guys would enjoy his art. He is an independent artist so he is not nearly as popular as he deserves to be, but he embraces the reaction community, and he is slowing amassing a sizable audience. I hope you will give him a chance, you won't regret it!

I’m not as much a fan of some of her earliest popular songs, tho I do concede they sound much better with her adult voice. (I’ll be crucified for this, but I could never get into Love Story.) And just a note re the Long Pond sessions - they’re all very paired back versions of the album songs, so My Tears Ricochet from folklore sounds different than this. (And personally, I like the album version more - I like the anger that comes through. This lullaby, she’s just more weighed down and sad, and while I get that, there’s a power in the anger that comes through on the line “when I’m screaming at the sky” that is missing for me here.)

@khills10 ай бұрын
@@HPReact I’d actually argue that it’s pretty rare to see an artist mature like Taylor has. I think we might have a small glut of it right now because there were a LOT of talented teen bands 15 years ago (thanks Simon Cowell!), so we have all the One Direction boys plus some of the Disney kids, like Miley Cyrus (who has also had her craft mature beautifully, if you wanna branch out). But think of all the pressure for JLo, Madonna, etc, to sound the same? Even James Hetfield of Metallica had to explain why his voice suddenly sounded just a LITTLE different on records (way back in the late 90s), because he had to learn to sing properly or else he’d destroy his throat. I think that for some reason, there’s only a small group of entertainers who are allowed to grow up and grow into their voices and craft. Hell, even Beyoncé has faced pushback for it!

I don’t hate these songs, but I do rank two of them near the bottom. Here they are: Taylor Swift - ME! (feat. Brendon Urie of Panic! At The Disco) ft. Brendon Urie kzbin.info/www/bejne/fKa7f6ijd9x3ha8 Taylor Swift - Superman (Taylor’s Version) (Lyric Video) kzbin.info/www/bejne/fJ-TlqVtfZZ3o5I Taylor Swift - It’s Nice To Have A Friend (Official Audio) kzbin.info/www/bejne/m5KzYomprKd5aJo (I personally love this song, but a lot of swifties groan about it.)

@@HPReact It depends on how you look at it. I like these songs but, if I was forced to rank them, then two of them would be in the bottom 20% of the TSwift discography. Also, a lot of people super-duper hate Shake It Off. I personally like it, but some people hate it with a passion - probably because it got so over-played that people just can't stand to hear it anymore. I don't hear radio much and I never over-played it, so that problem never happened for me. Anyway, if your are looking for an example of a "bad TSwift song" you now have some candidates to consider. But checking these out in a reaction video might be a treacherous path. Swifties tend to be passionate about their TSwift rankings.😉

I can't choose a Taylor Swift top 10! Maybe a top 50 or 100. If I could, it would vary over time, and on how recently I listened to songs, because when listened to less recently listened songs, I forgot how good they were or maybe they hit different now. Of the 44 songs performed at The Eras Tour, I personally thought 28 to 30 songs were excellent, which is an incredible ratio for 44 songs. Only because you asked...the only song I didn't really care for was "Miss Americana & the Heartbreak Prince", and my next lowest was "Tolerate It"...but they're all hits, so plenty of people love them. Someday I may love them too, although "Tolerate It" could be a challenge, because its scenario seems unrealistic (so maybe I'm missing some context 🤷). I don't think any of Taylor Swift's album songs are clinkers, which is really saying something, because I think all of my other favorite artists have had clinkers, although some of them may have escaped putting their clinkers on albums. Music artists vary greatly, so I didn't have a good way to rank my favorite artists until I finally thought about having to listen to each of my favorite music artists' catalogs continuously. After thinking about it this way, I'd listen to Taylor Swift for the longest time, so Taylor Swift is my favorite music artist. It's really based on her song distribution on the clinker-through-excellent scale, and the extent and variety in her catalog. And if I do the same for music artists' music videos, Taylor Swift is again my favorite. (I really enjoy her lyric videos too.)

If you can't relate to "Tolerate It", you are a very lucky person. Most of us have been in relationships where one person puts time and effort into a relationship and tries their best to make everything perfect for their partner but that partner just tolerates his or her existence. That lyric "I know my love should be celebrated, but you tolerate it" hits home for too many of us during some point in our lives. You are blessed if you can't relate.

@@vidsorama2 Thanks, your comment helped me! Up until now, the lyrics in "Tolerate It" seemed a lot more platonic and metaphorical than they did romantic, so whenever I listened to it, I mostly wondered if it was about Scott Borschetta (her old record label). I figured that in a romantic relationship, Taylor Swift wouldn't let it sink this far before breaking up -- because she's extremely intelligent, extremely perceptive, and financially independent -- but I guess her "hopeless romantic" side sinks her. I went back and watched the lyric video a few times today and read some of its many comments, and some of them had me tearing up. 😢 Needless to say, now the scenario is realistic to me, and I no longer just tolerate "Tolerate It". 😄😭 Damn it, Taylor. ❤️

At the end of the video you ask for "clinkers" so here my list of Taylor Swift songs that make people cringe a little sometimes: - ME! - some fans dislike the style - willow - one jarring phrase - A Perfectly Good Heart - I'm not sure why this one is disliked so strongly by the fandom but I know I can't listen to it on repeat. - Shake It Off - I think fans just get annoyed that the general public assumes (or assumed?) this is Taylor's sound - This is Why We Can't Have Nice Things - intentionally sounds condescending and some people don't pick up on the irony There's probably more that are relatively widely disliked. I know most fans either didn't like or didn't understand Vigilante Shit until the Eras Tour.
