A ton of people only recall Bird as a great shooter, which he was, but Bird's game was all-around and virtually perfect. He was a monster player, the greatest trash talker, and one of the smartest players to ever play the game. He doesn't look the part one bit, he didn't have those athletic abilities, but his basketball IQ and skills were too good. The 3-point line was implemented his rookie year, coaches and players weren't thinking of the game from the line, and Bird being a big man at 6'10" invented not only big men being long-range shooters, he invented utilizing the line. Founder of the 50-40-90 club, won 3 MVPs in a row in the talent-rich 80's NBA, and so much more to say. NBA legends speak about him as the man for a reason including Jordan.

Most of those people only know him as a shooter because they were told that, that was all he was good at. Most of them have never seen him play. They would know better than to talk bad about a legendary, larger than life player of his caliber if they had seen him play. Lots of people are too racist to give him a chance. Like they were when Larry first appeared and started blowing minds. I like what Rodman said about Larry only getting all of that attention because he's white. I loved it when Larry made him eat those words even though Rodman was stuck to him like glue. Rodman was great and one of my favorite players but Larry was Larry. Most people couldn't do anything. Stopping him wasn't easy.

Bird was amazing in every aspect of the game. I am biased, because Magic is my GOAT, but Larry could do it all, as Magic would be the first to tell you. But if there is any margin between them, it is paper thin. I recall the documentary of the two of them and Magic saying that when they played on a US national team in college, Magic was not expecting him to be that good, and called his friends after saying "Damn! This white dude can PLAY!"

He called his shots so many times against defenses it was crazy. He would tell them, im going to go right then crossover, go left and hit a fade with my left hand. Needless to say he did exactly that and hit the shot. Guy played once only with left handed shots. He was the best.

Being a native Hoosier, I watched Bird from high school through his NBA retirement and I can tell you, without a doubt, to this day, he was the greatest all-around player I have ever seen. I even saw the game where he battled Person (with the Pacers) in the division finals, and this was late in his career. He got hurt enough (hitting his face on the floor) so that he had to leave the game. Later, in the second half, when Indiana was doing well and leading and seemed to be in control, Bird came back out, still injured, took over the game and Boston won.

I had the privilege of seeing Larry Bird play against my team. Bird is the only player I've ever seen who made me nervous when he had the ball behind the arc before he even took the shot. He was that clutch. Late in a close game you never wanted to see him with the ball. Ever. That kind of basketball I.Q. will never be seen again in our lifetimes. He was amazing.

I had a similar experience watching Dirk Nowitzki absolutely destroy my hometown team in-person. I couldn't even be mad about it, because he was pretty-much just out there like he was running his sets in practice by himself, but it was the actual game and he was hitting everything. Something doesn't hurt quite so bad about it when you KNOW it's a future Hall of Fame'r taking your team apart.

Larry was ambidextrous and he was always playing around to challenge himself and beat his boredom apparently. He played with peoples minds like he played with them on the court. He wasn't just facing them on the court, he was toying with them. It broke their spirits. Lots of them look bewildered and wonder what just happened. Many of them are still wondering to this day. He made people look stupid when they faced him in the game. Sounds (Seems) like exaggeration but is it? Watch and see for yourself. He earned that nickname Legend. He was The Man.

Magic to MJ to Larry. What a play! Super reaction. Really interesting to see these older guys do their thing. People don't realize how great the MJs, Birds, and Magics of the league really were. The young guys today owe a debt of gratitude. Professional Basketball almost folded in the late 70's. Larry, Magic, and a few years later MJ brought the league back to glory and made sure the guys today get paid.

For those that think Larry Bird was not as good as he really was. This comment is for those whom never had the chance to see him play. Little know thing about Larry to those that never saw him play , he could effect the outcome of a game and never take a shot, thats how devastating his passing skills were. Here is one thing that most fans (people) either don't know or try to ignore, prior to Larry joining the NBA there was no such thing as a three point line, that came in when Bird was starting his first year of his NBA career. Just think about what would todays game be without the three point line or if the line was one foot farther out like it was when it was first introduced also the three point shot was viewed by most as a gimmick. Bird used it as a strategic weapon to end a game. Food for thought. At that time it was not about the individuals stats it was about the win. But if you need some stats here you go: Here are some of Larry Bird's notable career achievements and statistics: Three-time NBA champion (1981, 1984, 1986); Two-time NBA Finals MVP (1984, 1986); Three-time NBA MVP (1984-86); 12-time NBA All-Star (1980-88, 1990-92); Nine-time All-NBA First Team (1980-88); All-NBA Second Team (1990); Three-time All-NBA Defensive Second Team (1982-84); NBA Rookie of the Year (1980); NBA All-Rookie Team (1980); Three-time NBA Three-Point Contest champion (1986-88); Career-high in points: 60 (March 12, 1985) -- tied for franchise record with Jayson Tatum; Named NBA Coach of the Year (1998); and Named NBA Executive of the Year (2012). Larry Bird, was the first player to accomplish the 50-40-90 achievement, and one of two players to achieve the feat in multiple seasons. Career averages: 24.3 points per game 10.0 rebounds per game 6.3 assists per game 88.6% free throw percentage 49.6% field goal percentage 37.6% 3-point percentage If you need more proof, just look up the February 14, 1985 game Celtics vs. Jazz where Larry Bird was one steal away in the third quarter from being the second ever quadruple double in league history but he wold have been the first to record one in regulation play. The first one was recorded in Bulls vs. Hawks in O.T. October 18, 1974 that is Nate Thurmond, Now we can't forget that Bird famously played with two injured ankles and a notoriously cranky back that forced him to lay down on the floor during practice breaks. After season-ending foot surgery just six games into the 1988-89 season. The final thing most are unaware of Larry Bird played with threats against his life.

Bird played left handed because he could. There has never been and there will probably never be a player like Bird. He could shoot with either hand, he could shoot 3 pt shots, he could rebound, he could pass - he could do everything and anything he wanted do, even after telling the other team exactly what he would do and even did it in the most pressure situations. Birds biggest missed shot came in game 4 of he 1987 NBA finals against the Lakers. Magic had just put the Lakers ahead by 1 with 2 seconds to go in the game. Somehow Bird got open and took the last shot - Bird thought it was going in, Magic thought it was going in and Pat Riley(coach of the Lakers) thought it was going in - but it didn't. If Bird had made that shot the GOAT conversation would be much different.

I'm old enough that I saw Larry, Magic, and Jordan, from their college days, and their entire NBA careers. They were 3 of the best at their positions ever.

Larry Legend was a 3 time NBA MVP. That's 3 times in a ROW. Only Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell have done it before. Bird is the 3 person to do it and no one else since then.

Imagine if he played today in his prime, knowing how great even though he was injured and still being that great back then, he'd be one of the greatest up there with Jordan and LeBron.

That winning shot against X man and the Supersonics was the first and only lead in the game. Brilliant.

Interesting fact. That shot where Pippin and Jordan 2 team Bird...he was wearing a back brace because his back was so screwed up. He still swept the Bulls.

Everyone only really ever talks about Johnson, and Jordan, but Bird was easily just as good.
