The name Bobby Fischer, at least to Americans, is synonymous with chess. A prodigy in the 50s, a world class player in the 60s, the 70s saw Fischer at his pinnacle. He earned the right to challenge Boris Spassky in a title run without comparison, defeating Mark Taimanov and Bent Larsen with perfect scores of 6-0, and ex-champion Petrosian 6½-2½. Now the stage was set, and the only thing standing between Fischer and Spassky was Fischer himself.
The match was mired in political overtones, during the height of the Cold War. The Soviet chess system had a monopoly on the title since 1948, and the expectations on Spassky were enormous. While Fischer studied chess virtually in seclusion, Spassky had the full resources of the USSR. Victor Baturinsky, head of Soviet Chess Sports Committee, said: "Basically, the Soviet leadership and the powers that be in sport, were interested in just one issue: how to stop Fischer from becoming World Champion.
With the match set to begin in Reykjavik, Iceland, Fischer (who had not signed any documents confirming his participation) began to make a number of demands, including a percentage of television rights, a larger prize fund, and all manner of conditions covering everything from the lighting to the chair cushions. To satisfy Bobby's demands of a larger prize fund, British chess promoter James Slater donated a dazzling $125,000 to be added to the prize fund. Fischer still needed more convincing by Bill Lombardy (Fischer's last-minute choice as second), and one famously persuasive telephone call from Henry Kissinger. Mere hours before he would be forfeited, Fischer arrived in Iceland.

Fischer faced the Soviets more or less on his own, but he still represents his country. Despite him claiming being alone and not representing the US, he was an American hero. Not a patriot, but a hero. The USSR considered him being this close to the title as an American infiltration of their chess monopoly. It was less of their guy losing the championship and more of not letting the American get it instead.
@hillsideonly
@hillsideonly 5 жыл бұрын
@Keith Alfred Anthony Donovan I'm saying Fisher may have won match or 2 against Tal, but I don't think he could have beaten Tal in a World Championships showdown. And Fisher Claiming he prepared alone??, I don't know Fisher so I don't know if he's honest or not, but I won't know whether to believe it or not, Every Country has a Chess Association, so normally, the Soviet federation would have helped their player Spassky to prepare with coaches and practise partners not the whole entire Soviet Players or Coaches not even the Top Players as they all had their life to live, but people saying he defeated or destroyed the Soviet school of thought, School of Chess is just so much devotion and hyperbolic stand given to Fisher's achievement, Of course Fisher is an amazing talent, but for a man that won the world Championship just once, was very paranoid and discomforting, didn't defend his title, even kept making false accusations about the Russians just to draw the sympathy of people as is typical of Americans knowadays, there's just no way it sounds safe and sane to call that man the greatest player of all time,
@humanrightsadvocate
@humanrightsadvocate 5 жыл бұрын
Fischer just wanted to prove once and for all that he's the best chess player in the world. And he did it like a boss. Of course fucktards will take pride in the accomplishments of someone who happened to be born in their country. That doesn't mean Fischer represented the U.S. The world title is a PERSONAL title. How much did the U.S. government invest in Fischer?

I guess I don't know what three fold repetition actually consists of. The position on the board has been repeated twice. It would not be until Fischer makes his next move, Rook to E1 that the position would be repeated three times. Was he claiming three fold in anticipation of this next move?

@junc3354
@junc3354 5 жыл бұрын
sometime ago, before the advent of the computers. once you reach the 40th move you are given the extra time to continue, you could ask the tournament arbiter for an envelope , ponder on your next move , write in on your score sheet and have it sealed together with your opponents score sheet only to be opened by the arbiter at the resumption of the game. it could be the next day, for swiss system and match play., some round robin tournaments designate a certain day of the week for resumption of the adjourned games.

Marv Albert said that Fischer's defense was more tenacious than "Tenacious D." It could only be described as "Gukesh D."

Yes, Fischer was definitely a Wonderboy, and a master of the Classico time format. He wasn't going for Low Hangin' Fruit, he had a drive To Be the Best player in History. It's no surprise many people pay him Tribute. Picking chess as his career was truly The Pick of Destiny. Too bad The Government Totally Sucks or we might have seen him play again later in life.

Spassky is a bum for drawing! It wasn't a mistake he basically quit and knew he couldn't win the series. There was at least 5 games he could've won if he worked harder overnight on chess. Karpov agreed that Boris just quit

At 6:17 White can capture C4 pawn either with the Queen or the Rook.

Sir @ 11:00 how about Rc8 by black pinning white rook and offer own rook. As rook cant b captured white queen will b hanging. And on other hand queen trade looses on spot after black rook first captures white rook and gives check (in between move). After that pawn captures queen

I'm sixty and I've always been into computer chess. Your comment that an expert said that Spassky should have moved Re3 is correct according to Stockfish. You said maybe not. Hmm are you really checking your positions?

Bobby Fischer is the best loved chess player in history. An entire generation of young American players was never born when he walked away...

that's a pretty bold statement.. "best loved in history" America's place and population is quite insignificant compared to the rest of the world, you guys just have bigger Ego's lol... I'm sure Fischer was loved outside US borders just as I'm sure some GM's from other countries were appreciated inside your borders. When I was a kid (growing in the late 80's and early 90's) I loved both Fischer and Kasparov, and I grew older and found out more about what kind of people they really were (are) I place them lower on my "fan list" and started giving props to other players who really deserve them. My guess is that Tal was the most loved chess player in history but I may be wrong.

I love him and hate him at the same time. Love for his awesome run 70-72 and other amazing games he gave us, and hate for his cowardice against Karpov in 1975 and vanishing from the sport at the top of his game.

The USA may be five percent of world population, but we out-influence our numbers compared to the rest of the world. Tal may be the most beloved chess player world-wide...who knows? Just because Bobby and Gary are not exactly nice guys does not mean that the player cannot be admired. Bobby, Gary, Karpov, and Tal, are comparable geniuses. Bobby quit chess three years before young Karpov entered the picture. Alekhine ran away from strong opponents for 15 years, choosing weak candidates like Bogoljubov.
