Cricket is MASSIVE in Jamaica. The video is all tongue in cheek, taking the piss out of stereotypes. I saw them in the late 70s…. Man…… they were awesome live.

Takes me back to 1978, the year of platform shoes 👞flare trousers 👖 and chopper bikes 🚲. Those were the days of being carefree and young. Their other hit from 1975 called, “I’m not in love” is a brilliant love song 🎶 and I’m sure many a child was conceived due that one song alone.

I believe this song was inspired by a holiday taken by band members in the Caribbean! Cricket is a major sport throughout the Caribbean but in international competition the West Indies Cricket team represents the region.I love both Cricket and Reggae also!😊🎶🌴

Cricket is by far the biggest sport in the West Indies. This song was a reaction to what some black friends of theirs had to deal with in Britain at the time but looking at it if the white guys were racially abused. They love everyone.

Background to the song: The band were good friends with Justin Hayward of the Moody Blues (they would later produce the hit 'Blue Guitar' for him and John Lodge). He told the story of how he was mugged whilst holidaying in the Caribbean. This became the inspiration for the song. A cod-reggae arrangement but brilliantly done with a typical dash of 10CC humour. The video is really naff, but hey ho! Number one in the UK back in '78 and deservedly so.

The Caribbean islands played as a collective team called The West Indies when playing other cricket playing countries. They were by far and away the best side in the world from the mid 70s to the mid 90s. It's such a groove of a song, it was a massive hit back in the day. I think the video was poking fun at the naivety of the English man abroad. Nice reaction again.

10cc , another UK group, from Stockport near Manchester. The group included Kevin Godley and Lol Creme, who as Godley and Creme had a massive hit in the 80' with "Cry" , and were the directors of many groundbreaking and famous music videos in the 80s. ( "Cry" developed the technique used on Michael Jacksons "Black or White" video). They developed a unique video style for artists like Ultravox, Duran Duran, The Police, FGTH, Culture Club, Herbie Hancock, Visage, Sting, Toyah, Asia, Elton John, Go West, Huey Lewis, Patti LaBelle....

I knew you would figure this out. Jamaica former british crown colony. Loves cricket reggae and ganja. These guys cut a record in jamaica reggae ska style. I guess you gotta forgive some of tone of the 70s...not politally correct by todays standard. 10cc was brit rock brand...but did a good job on the reggae. I like your perspective on music and life. I'd say like 80-90 percent of white British rock bands had a crack at reggae in the 70s - The Stones, Zeppelin, McCartney. It was a thing. They all loved it. You'd call it cultural appropriation now - and even at the time it seemed icky.

They do sing "I don't like cricket" for the first chorus". The next chorus is "I don't like reggae". The last chorus being "I don't like Jamaica". The song also ends with the words " I don't like cricket, I love it, dreadlock holiday......" (actually).
