I know Lex said she didn't want to do "I'm not in Love", but I'm sure Nick would be more than interested as, even today, it's one of the most innovative pieces of music ever produced and which reached No1 in the British charts and No 2 in the Billboard charts in the US in 1975, as well as charting in many other countries. They produced the massed choir effects by using tape loops, well before the days of multi tracking and digital effects, and originally planned to make the whole track without using any instruments at all, but in the end liked the combination of the ethereal choir and the original rhythm track. The "Big Boys Don't Cry" section features the whispering voice of their recording studio secretary and for me has to be one of the sexiest voices ever recorded. They were a multi talented band of studio wizards with member Graham Gouldman, for example, writing hit songs for the Yardbirds, (featuring Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page et al), who would go on to be the New Yardbirds under Page before morphing into Led Zeppelin, numerous hits for British invasion bands The Hollies and Herman's Hermits as well as "Behind the Door" which was covered by Cher. Give it a listen, you wont be disappointed and, for sure, won't have heard anything quite like it. Link below to a "live", (as live as it could be with a track like this), video on KZbin, showing what a great voice Eric Stewart had. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mZitlJ59qLdgipI

No way were they a one hit wonder. They were one of the most creative art pop bands of the 70s. They had some great radio tracks but also some amazing album tracks which were both creative and witty. They are definitely NOT a reggae band but often adapted the genre to suit what they wanted to say in the song. They wrote most often in two pairs (Gouldman,Stewart and Godley,Creme) which added variety to each album up until Godley and Creme left to become amazingly successful music videographers exploiting the growth caused by the creation of MTV. Gouldman and Stewart continued as 10cc but to my mind lost something critical to the quality of the band. Please check out more but have a look at the lyrics as they are always intellectually sharp and often very funny. (See ‘Clockwork Creep’ or ‘Worst band in the world’) Also check out ‘One Night in Paris’ parts 1 to 3 which is an interesting listen when you think that it was released about 6 months before Bohemian Rhapsody showing that Queen were not unique in playing with the pop/opera mixture.

It is one of my all-time favourite bands and one of the biggest bands of the 70s. The name 10cc supposedly comes from a dream the guy who signed the to their record had. He stood outside the Hammersmith odeon, which is a great music venue in the UK, and a board read "10cc The Best Band In The World." Try "I'm Mandy Fly Me" next.their least played, but my favourite.

@@colin4796 There was a much better story going around in the 70s, when it was widely believed that the name came because the world record for the volume of semen in a single ejaculation was said to be 9 cubic centimetres. Shame it isn't true.

Hi Guys! Yep I agree with everyone else, 10CC were a BRILLIANT band that was completely overlooked by the Corporate music business in America, they were probably just too out there. You hear it all the time, but for them it really was true, they were LIGHT years ahead of their time!! Once again every one below is dead on target song wise, Rubber Bullets, Life is a Minestrone, Oh Donna and of course "I'm not in Love" are ALL genius! And if and when you do listen to I'm not in love, remember that's ALL analog! No computers folks haha..also, Dreadlock is good, but it is after Godley and Creme left. With that said you should check out "Cry" by Godley and Creme, especially the video! They were early pioneers in Video as well, TRUE genius's...Happy New Year!!

10cc, recording in Jamaica, were passed by Paul McCartney in a taxi. Macca shouted jokingly "Bloody tourists!" as he passed them by, and their album title was born. Macca was there recording Band on the run. Quite a time. Great track - try "Rubber Bullets" next. Incidentally, the band included Eric Stewart (ex Mindbenders and later a Macca sideman) and Graham Gouldman a prolific songwriter for many including The Hollies.

Hi folks, I'm actually jealous of you 2 hearing this for the 1st time! 10cc are/were a great band especially popular here in the U.K, This particular song was recorded in the very un-Jamaican surroundings of Dorking, Surrey just up the road from me in Strawberry Studios South an old converted cinema, They even named one of their earlier albums 'Deceptive Bends' after a roadsign on the A24 road with the notorious Mickleham Bends where many a biker/motorist have come a cropper over the years, Sign has changed but still an accident blackspot sadly, Graham Gouldman of 10cc is prolific songwriter in the 60's he wrote songs like 'Bus Stop', 'Look through any Window' for the Hollies, 'No Milk Today' for Herman's Hermits (Both Manchester bands), The Yardbirds a seminal UK band he wrote 'For your Love', 'Heart Full of Soul' and obviously most of 10cc's output including this one, He's never got the credit for being one of the best songwriters/producers/musician of his generation, Give this man a Knighthood for Chrissakes! I love the song Five o'clock in the morning, later they had a hit with 'An Englishman in New York (nice video clip). They also got fame producing video clips for various great artists including Peter Gabriel (Sledgehammer). LOVE that you did 10cc, one of my very favorite bands of all time. Art Rock cousins to Supertramp, ELO, Queen, etc. but with more humor, and as talented as any 70'/80s band out there. Lots of hits but really an album band. Many of their album songs were just as good or better than their "hits'. Known for outstanding production, it's easy to just get lost in their sound, but you need to pay attention to their lyrics as well, as their stories are so well written with a lot of wordplay. (I think you missed the lyrics in Dreadlock Holiday--you should give it another listen and take in the lyrics this time). Reading through the comments, you find a large number of their songs recommended because they have so many equally great songs throughout their albums. Don't pay attention to number of online listens---those correspond mainly to songs played more by classic rock stations. I agree with so many here that songs like "I'm Mandy, Fly Me" (based on an airline's TV ad campaign in which pretty flight attendants would say "I'm Sherry, Fly Me", or "I'm Michelle, Fly Me" , etc.), and " Feel the Benefit" , and "Art For Art's Sake" would be awesome choices for you next 10cc listen. But there are so many others as well. And even though Lex has heard "I'm Not in Love" somewhere in the past, listening intently on headphones would be very surprising and sonically impressive.

10CC is definatly not a reggae band. They had some reggae songs, yes, but they made all kinds of music. Pop, rock, operette like stuff, experimental, tearjerkers, progressive rock and even some more hardrock like stuff. 10CC had many hits, but still it seems a lot of people forgot all about this great band. Graham Gouldman is still performing with a couple musicians and calls that band 10CC, but they mostly play old stuff, or stuff Gouldman once wrote for other bands (i.e. no milk today, busstop, for your love, etc). 10CC had a lot of influence on bands like Queen, Guns n Roses, but also on musical composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, who integrated a part of 10CC's "Une nuit a Paris" in the Phantom of the Opera. For 10CC's biggest hit I'm not in Love, Mercury Records offered them a fortune just for that song.'So, yes, thats how good they were: 10CC the most underrated band in the world.

Their first album (the one with "Rubber Bullets") is jam-packed with fun weirdness and would be a great place to start. Not a one-hit wonder, they had 2 top 10s in the US - "I'm Not In Love" and "The Things We Do For Love" ("Dreadlock Holiday" reached #44). They had many more hits in the UK. They were all over the place stylistically but are often given the label "art rock".

An interesting thing I've heard, but haven't been able to confirm, was that back in the '70s in England there were two opposing camps. One was the Queen camp, the other the 10cc camp. Both bands had excellent vocals. Personally I give the edge to 10cc. They had a broader palette. As you heard they could do reggae, though they're not a reggae band, but they also did sumptuous pop, Lex can attest to that having heard "I'm Not in Love". In addition, they could do straight rock and roll, try "Good Morning Judge". The opposing camps formed when both bands put out a magnum opus. Queen released "Bohemian Rhapsody" and 10cc put out "One Night Paris". Each camp accused both bands of stealing the other's conceptual vibe. I think that's largely hype. They were just two good bands who were doing modern music with an emphasis on really good singing. I'd suggest you play both tunes and compare. It would make an interesting show.

Happy New Year to you and my fellow subscribers! It's excellent that you've done a reaction to 10cc as I feel sure that there are plenty of their songs that you would both enjoy even more than this one. They were a UK art rock band whose peak period was during the early to late 70s. I say "were", but technically it should be "are" as the band still exists, albeit with just one of the original members now and no longer recording new material, they just play live. Their songs were typically laced with cheeky humour, which they milked to the nth degree, as evidenced in Dreadlock Holiday (their only well-known song in a reggae style), but they were also capable of pathos too and their songs were atmospheric either way. They were very far from being one-hit wonders in the UK and were very well-known in the UK during the 70s. Their most played songs will be singles and, of those, the one I think you'd like the best if "I'm Mandy Fly Me", even though it wasn't as big a hit as some of the others. Other great singles include "The Things We Do For Love", "Art for Art's Sake" and "Rubber Bullets", but their album tracks are equally worthy of exploration. I regard their seminal track as being the 11 minute masterpiece "Feel The Benefit" (kzbin.info/www/bejne/a3nGqZuZiNGHmZY), but there are other magnificent album tracks such as "How Dare You/Lazy Ways", "Don't Hang Up" and "Iceberg", which are all from the album "How Dare You!" which is my favourite. Keep going with 10cc - you won't regret it!

From Wikipedia King signed the band to his UK Records label in July 1972 and dubbed them 10cc. By his own account, King chose the name after having a dream in which he was standing in front of the Hammersmith Odeon in London where the boarding read "10cc The Best Band in the World". A widely repeated claim, disputed by King[19] and Godley,[20] but confirmed in a 1988 interview by Creme,[21] and also on the webpage of Gouldman's current line-up is that the band name represented ten cubic centimetres, a volume of semen that was more than the average amount ejaculated, thus emphasising their potency or prowess. Happy New Year you guys!!

You've hit upon one of the great British pop and rock bands here. They were brilliant - arguably the best foursome since The Beatles; all four were great singers (unlike the Beatles they had a drummer who could REALLY sing), musicians and composers (Graham Gouldman in his late teens wrote hits for Herman's Hermits, The Yardbirds and the Hollies} ....The name is a little bit rude - 5cc (ironically what you have been listening to here as by the time this came out two members had left to form Godley & Creme) is the average male ejaculate, they wanted to be better than average! Their output is a joyous mixture of styles (no they were not a reggae band but the two on this track, Gouldman and Eric Stewart were fans of the genre), very inventive and with a very mischievous sense of humour - one of their songs is the self-mocking 'Worst Band in the World'. They tended to write in pairs; Gouldman & Stewart - more poppy, sometimes soppy output, Godley & Creme - perhaps the more ambitious writers. When they all came together they often produced magic.

Another great choice guys. 10CC is a very underrated band that many people don't know about. Their catalog has many, many great songs. They (Had) two distinct camps within the band. Two of the members were rock orientated, while the other two were of "Artful" orientation. The teams alternated songs. Some are rockers and ballad types, the other tracks are "Unusual." Listen to enough, and you'll be able to tell who wrote what. Also from Bloody Tourists, is a personally fave of mine "Old Mister Time." A song that grabbed me several years ago, and hasn't let go. Enjoy the ride. P.S. Look up the meaning of 10cc, it's kind of X-rated.

Oh man, I love 10cc. So progressive and just cool and funky. They were much bigger in UK than USA, unfortunately. You would love "sacro-ileac ". Just so sweet and witty. Very underrated band

You'd probably like the whole "Best of" compilation, lots of great songs. And other commenters probably know better, but I'm guessing they have a really interesting catalog overall, though I haven't explored it yet. I'm partial to songs like "Rubber Bullets" and "Art for Art's Sake."

I’m really surprised you haven’t heard more of their work. Highly innovative and progressive. This album is the better of their later work along with “How Dare You” when Godley and Crème left to pursue their own stuff and make excellent early music videos. But, the best stuff is from earlier pre 76. “Silly Love” has an amazing guitar sound, “I’m not in love” is a production masterpiece which must be listened to on head phones to appreciate the multi layered vocal double tracking (thousands of bits of tape cut, dubbed and re recorded). Lots of clever stuff and humour too. You will love their stuff I guarantee it. “Dean and I” and “I’m Mandy Fly Me” all rate very highly. Their from Lancashire and built their own studio in Rochdale ( the least likely place) in the early 70s where they recorded when it wasn’t being used by other groups. I hope and expect you to delve in to their music, you’ll both love it. Not quite Steely Dan, but as an important part of my music collection. Sometimes weirdly comical. :)

ESP songs like 'You've got a cold' 'I wanna rule the World' And the funny but creepy' Blackmail.' But then they were capable of producing beautiful songs like 'I'm not in love' ' Old Wild Men ' and the brilliant'Don't Hang Up '

10CC were a pop band,....well at least they were commercially successful but in reality they were a great ROCK band. Art for arts sake and wall street shuffle were great songs. Forget Oasis, these guys are the best thing to come out of Manchester👍

10cc is the normal amount of ejaculate for a man. Their inside joke. This is towards the end before they split. Includes Graham Gouldman, writer of many 60s hits, and Eric Stewart, formerly a Mindbender. Lol and Kevin went their own way and became Godley and Creme. Geniuses all. Check out Cry. You won't regret it. Early hits- Rubber Bullets and the Wall Street Shuffle.

The albums consist of great songs. I bought their "classic album selection" CDs and Godley & Creme's "Body Of Work" a few years back. It' was a kind of Prog pop band, a bit like Supertramp.

My college roommate introduced me to 10cc in the mid 1970s. IMHO one of the most underrated popular music groups of last half of the 20 the Century! Always avantgarde and an inspiration to the New Wave movement. They had too many great sings to list! Rubber Bullets, Clockwork Creep, Worst Band In The World, Donna, Wall Street Shuffle, Silly Love, Life Is A Minestrone, The Things we do for Love and many more! 10 cc is a rabbit he to the center of the Earth!

10cc had 3 UK No.1 singles and 5 top ten LP's in the 1970's so definitely not one hit wonders! They were similar to their contemporaries Supertramp & Dire Straits in that they were primarily album bands who had break-out hit singles. 10cc had clever songwriters and creative and inventive production ideas. I would recommend Hotel and Wall Street Shuffle

I'm Mandy ,Fly Me is my favourite but they're so many to choose if you're a fan. "Good Morning Judge" or "Art for Art's Sake" are great songs. They're clever productions were way ahead of so many Pop bands of that time, you be disappointed with any of them. I think 10cc was motor bike. 😃

Odd that you should choose this track - of all their singles hits, IMO this is one that has worn least well - even though it was a #1 hit in the UK in 1978. I'd steer you to tracks like "Wall Street Shuffle", "Things we do for Love", "Life is a Ministone", "Art for Art's Sake" or perhaps "Good Morning Judge", "Rubber Bullets" or the widely sampled "The Worst Band in the World". Their catalogue is a rich one - they had a dozen UK hit singles and numerous chrted albums during the 1970s offering tracks like "Old Wild Men" and "Barom Samedi" among lots of others. Post 10cc band members Kevin Godley and Lol Creme had a couple of great singles out - the very spooky "Under Your Thumb" and the almost-Motown sounding "Wedding Bells". A lot of delights await if you're interested.

One of my favourite bands! Huge here in the UK throughout the 70s. They were 4 guys from Manchester, who had 3 number 1 singles. After 4 albums, half of the band left (5cc), and the hits slowly dried up. They still tour with the original bass player/songwriter/singer Graham Gouldman. Check out their finest album "Sheet Music", and their epic track, One Night in Paris

10cc was very interesting pop from England. This one and I'm Not in Love are their only tunes that I've heard, so a 2 hit wonder? 😁 You have to remember, reggae was not omnipresent in the 70's like it is now, so this was really different. I Shot the Sheriff by Eric Clapton was kind of the gateway with a couple others, to discovering Bob Marley and the new wave bands brought back ska, too. A good song that still works.

Just to add a comment for anyone interested, people always talk about another multitracked classic "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen but "I'm not in Love" was released around 6 months before the Queen track. Was Freddie Mercury influenced by the earlier10cc release?, who knows but "I'm not in Love" certainly opened up the possibility of using the mixing desk as an additional instrument in the recording studio. I've included a link below to a "Making Of" video which shows the band talking about the recording process. Fascinating, especially so given the number of years elapsed since it was recorded. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aaDblmejodiEpdU
