I was a metalhead back in the 80s - listening to Sabbath, Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Iron Maiden, Metallica, etc., and ABBA was my embarrassing secret. Looking back, I don't think I was the only one, but none of us would have ever admitted it. I'm too old to care any more. I love them.

For me, one of the very best pop songs ever written. Beatles-esque! And Benny and Bjorn were writing in English as a Second Language, which only adds to my astonishment. The opening hook (yes, sung a cappella!) demonstrates how they managed to find an English phrase that just happened to be perfectly musical. It's a minor miracle. Anyone who speaks English as a first language would be hard-pressed to come up with something so amazing.

Here's another fun fact that many people might not be aware of: The word Abba is in the New Testament. It's another name for God the Father. It actually means Daddy. As children of God it's okay to call him Daddy. It's a little more user-friendly than Jehovah or Elohim his more proper first names, there are others too but I really like Abba. We can thank Abba for Abba, (the Swedish Beatles) I'm not ashamed to say that I am a king's kid, neither should you be. Jesus is our brother or better yet our BFF. He's the reason we can even approach the Father. He paid our sin debt in full in case you didn't know. Thanks for listening.

They do have backing vocals, but in their own voices. ABBA's studio recording are layered. Usually they recorded the backing track first. Recall that music videos are studio recordings with the band members lip syncing in the video. And that goes for every artist and group. When ABBA performed live they typically used 3 backup vocalists, one male and two female. Also consider that ABBA's music videos were industry firsts, well before MTV! Check out some of their concert performances from Australia, or Wembley Arena in London.

You can't go wrong with any ABBA song really. I guess you could react to the track that really kicked off their worldwide fame; 'Waterloo.' They won the Eurovision Song Contest with it in 74 and it catapulted them into the charts in lots of countries. By the way, it's also featured in a very funny scene in the movie 'Muriel's Wedding' which I *highly* recommend for your other channel. There are other ABBA tracks in MW too. Also, if you fancy a song with a slower tempo, try 'My Love, My Life' - it's a very beautiful love song.

Waterloo - one of the only good songs to ever come out of the Eurovision 'song' contest. It's a glamorous pageant - a carnival-like spectacle- but it has never been about music. It's purely cultural and, mostly, political - that's why neighbouring countries almost always give each other maximum points.

@@davelister2961 Yes - although I think in the early days there was at least a degree of objectivity, maybe up to the very early 80s. Certainly after that though, it just became blatantly political. Jay and Amber, I remember a time, around 1980, when I heard somewhere that ABBA were the biggest group in the world and a 'Supergroup"!? I was fully into my hard rock Zeppelin phase, and I was like ABBA? no wayyy..in the whole world? I dismissed songs like this as pop tripe- catchy but throwaway. Now I see that they are among the giants of 20th century popular music haha.

My favorite and absolutely gorgeous best song from this group. The intro is a fantastic reminder of what true classic singing was. What a wonderful 🤯💎. The keyboard player is terrific as well

There has been a huge rebirth of Abba songs over the past decade. On Broadway and in Vegas, Mamma Mia ignited a new (recently, amongst those born long after ABBA retired) appreciation of just how great their music is. Like several other iconic groups, have done (Fleetwoood Mac, The Beatles, The Eagles, and more), ABBA wrote and performed their best music just before breaking up. "The Winner Takes It All", in my mind (even though it was not their all-time best seller), was definitely their best song, performed with the most conviction. The heartache of breaking up is clearly felt with every word Agnetha sings in her inimitable voice and style.

"Does Your Mother Know" would be a good one to do next, because it more prominently features the _men's_ voices.

Undoubtedly one of the greatest pop groups of all time and although their music might seem rather light and bubble gum oriented on the surface when you look a little deeper there's so much more to their music. I took a tremendous amount of heat from my contemporaries for liking this group 40 or 50 years ago but ABBA's music has certainly stood the test of time and they still get lots of airplay on the memory sticks I rock out to in the car. The production values alone make their songs worth listening to and the instrumentation and vocals are exemplary. Cheers from Ontario, Canada!

The second greatest writing foursome in recorded history. The Beatles then Abba. They just understood the art of pop music. Ear worm platinum just about every song. Waterloo come one. I dare you not to sing that for at least three days after hearing it. Then 50 yrs later to come out with that come back Album was simply incredible. Incredible songs, incrdible vocal arrangements and performances still.

Great choice!!!! Just saw their “live” show in London, it was AMAZING. If you ever do a deep cut of their’s “The Visitors” (the song….the album is the same name) is pretty amazing. They were technically WAY ahead of their time. Still are.

My favorite ABBA song. So powerful. I'm with Amber -- the a capella part with the chant is just fire. ABBA were huge all over Europe, but not as much in the US, which is a shame. So much talent.

The thing that amazes me the most about ABBA is the fact that their songwriters did not have English as their first language. It's one thing to speak in English but to be able to write it well especially in rhymes is not easy. Their songs are well written.

I agree with somebody in your comments about them. I was, and still am a hard rock, and heavy metal fan, my favorite kind of music! But, I like other types too. Always liked them. I was a little kid when they were in their prime in the 70's, but Still liked their music! Good music is good music! Love Agnetha too!! 😍😍

If you want a different flavour of song, I suggest Does Your Mother Know. Furthermore, you really can't go wrong with any song by ABBA. They're awesome. Suggestions: Dancing Queen, Fernando, Ring Ring, Super Trouper, Knowing Me Knowing You, Money Money Money, The Day Before You Came, Angeleyes, Slipping Through My Fingers, Two For the Price of One and many more. Their Breakout Song Waterloo should be on that list too. I can name more, but I think I listed enough songs already. ;-)
