My good young friend... I have been watching you channel for about 3 months, loved watching your journey as a young man through 70s and 80s music, the music of my childhood and teenage Years. Been anxiously awaiting your discovery of AL Jarreau. NO MUSICAL JOURNEY into soul and black music ,or Jazz would be complete without Al Jarreau... you may have reacted to him before, hut this is my first time seeing it... Take some good advice.. Just as you have dived into Earth, wind and fire, Prince, Stevie Wonder, and others.... take some time to dive into AL Jarreau... it is a complex, eye opening, mind expanding, and just downrightgood musical ,JOURNEY, like Stevie, he did his own thing, his own way, so your ears will thank you, Albums start right around 1970, and continue throughout 1980s, even kept recording, into 1990s and 2000s Not his first album, but a good place for you to start is "All Fly Home", then expand out from there... Take care

@@HipHipHooray1111 I have found that there are 2 types of people when it comes to Al Jarreau's music, those that absolutely love his music, and those that don't understand what they are hearing, ... usually the second group comes to the realization after a period of time ,that his music is some of the best stuff ever recorded, but yet ,some still just can't GET it... and its like a food that some people just won't try, and don't know what they are missing, .., sorry to hear that you were not able to see him live, but thankfully we still have the recordings, etc... Take care

I LOVE how he plays with his voice. At one point, it's percussive like an upright bass. Then he moves into a more mellow, sliding groove that could be like a trombone or sax. He was a brilliant and completely unique vocalist.

Oh Man!!! Loved Al Jarreau. He took me deeper into jazz-jazz contemporary. His vocals were legendary and this song was one of my favorites from the "Live in London" album. I have to listen to this every so often.

Damn, I can''t help but SWOON over this man's singular artistry. Miss his presence in this world. And yeah, It may not have seemed like it, but I could still 'feel' how enthusiastic, warm and extended that applause was for a more 'polite' nationally televised audience in Germany.

😂 You’re right that it’s a metaphor, but ‘Stab my 1st man-child in the eye’ likely means, fathered his first child.....conception. This was Al Jarreau pretty much any time he was live. He never compromised his passion. As he got into the ‘80’s, his work was more produced & commercially successful. I remember seeing him, I think in ‘89, & at one point when there was a pause, people started shouting requests like this one, & Take Five, & some of his originals from the ‘70’s. He said, ‘Wow, ya’ll know all my old songs.’ His ‘80’s hits: We’re in This Love Together; Mornin; Roof Garden; After All; Rheme from t.v. show, ‘Moonlighting’; Chick Corea’s composition, ‘Spain’; Dave Brubeck’s other tune, Blue Rondo.

Love this song💖 use to be part of my playlist at work back in the day. Help me through the day for sure. Al Jarreau was definitely one of our great ones. I think he was playing the air saxophone 🎷 I like that one song “Morning Mr. Radio....didn’t I tell you that everything here is just fine, here in my mind” he was very versatile, sultry and extremely talented. Be one ✨🖤

I once saw him in an outdoor concert. He was top bill over Chaka Kahn. She opened for him. That confused me because, Well it was Chaka Kahn. She opened and was dynamite. Al Jarreau followed and Blew her performance out the water. Like WOW I tell you no lie. You ain't seen all this man does on stage yet. Dude was amazing RIP

Great reaction to a great performance. Killing band, and Jarreau definitely at the peak of his considerable vocal powers. Much of this performance is available on YT, and the gigs (in Germany if memory serves) are preserved on a double live album.

my introduction to Mr. Jarreau when as a young adult in the early 80s with Mornin, Roof Garden, After All etc, but I discovered this version of We Got By and it gave me a deeper appreciation of his brilliant and gifted he truly was. A man in his own class, no one like him. I'l glad you enjoyed it ;0 Peace Out

First, I'm so happy that you enjoyed not only listening to Al Jarreau but watching him perform. Your subscribers really need to know about the great ones like Al Jarreau. Two of my favorite songs by Al Jarreau are "Double Face" with Eumir Deodato and "Girls Know How". Second, I'm extremely impressed with the journey he took to become the vocalist we know.

I remember seeing him live @ New York’s Radio City, like end of ‘80’s, & he’d had quite a lot of commercial success, including doing the theme song for the t.v. series, ‘Moonlighting’, where Bruce Willis became known. At some point there was a pause & Al had introduced the band & was kind of talking with the crowd. People started shouting requests like We Got By, Look to the Rainbow, (Brubeck’s) Take Five. He said, ‘Oh, ya’ll know all my old songs.’ It was an interesting moment’ because his most loyal fans were still following him from the ‘70’s because he made a deep impression on them with his style & sound in that music. His 80’s joints got great air play & put him on another level commercially: We’re in this Love Together, After All, Roof Garden, Mornin,, + impressive jazz remixes like Chick Corea’s Spain, & Dave Brubeck’s Blue Rondo. In 90’s I believe there was: This Feels So Good, & the classic Teach Me Tonight. I’m sure he did more after, just that maybe it wasn’t that popular. I don’t think that really affected Al’s live performance & touring, in that I think he had a truly loyal following. One incredible collaboration was a recording by jazz legend scat singer, Jon Hendricks. Her recorded a vial version of Miles Davis’ Freddie Freeloader, & wrote lyrics to each instrumental solo, which featured Al, George Benson, Bobby McFerrin, & Jon Hendricks himself doing the John Coltrane solo. You can get an idea what incredible musicians these men are, not just song entertainers.

Kem sounds so much like Al. I remember when I was a child and I first saw Al perform on Soul Train. He tickled me with his facial movements. I thought he was just unnecessarily animated. But I was intrigued all the same. My uncle explained to me how he used his mouth to make the sounds of instruments, in a sense. Needless to say, I grew to LOVE me some Al.
