The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Susy is a beautiful Santa, and her cute husband. I'm 80 and lived the 50's, boy were men jealous, two in my own family. A particular example happened early on when he was leaving a city arena after his show, in the 50's a guy stopped him and said "Hey are you Elvis Presley? Elvis said, "yeah" he socked Elvis right in the nose. so when guys came up to him even for an autograph he was very careful to stand back and soon, he had body guards. He got gas at a gas station somewhere in the south and women went crazy trying to get an autograph, the owner of the station came out and said "move your car", Elvis said, " Just a minute," and they guy ended up socking Elvis and Elvis knocked his block off. He had to go to court over that, and of course won. Just a few incidents mostly in the early days. Also there is the famous story how his body guard Red West met him. Elvis was in Humes High School and sadly was kicked off the football team because he wouldn't cut his hair. the only one in the school with long slicked back hair. He went into the guys bathroom and 4 guys jumped him and were trying to cut his hair, Red walks in and says hey what are you doing, they say we are giving him a hair cut, Red said, don't look like he wants one. Red said if you cut his you'll have to cut mine, (He had a crew cut). they left and Elvis would hire Red a few years later as a bodyguard. Love your reactions, thanks guys

Yes Ed Sullivan did his best to make sure that they censored him the best that they could. A funny fact is that even though Ed Sullivan did not want Elvis on the show, Elvis won him over by his last appearance on the show. At the end of that episode he stood next to Elvis and told the nation that Elvis was a "decent fine boy" and wished him luck.

Elvis sang 7 songs on Ed Sullivan on Jan 6th, 1957. The show was only an hour, so Elvis dominated the night. This was the last time he was on TV until Mar 1960, for his welcome home from the Army with Frank Sinatra. He did 2 movies in 1957 and 1 in 58, then the Army called him for duty.

The shirt he wore (velvet) was sewed by his mother. The sparkly vest was made by his girlfriend who made it for him when he just started being played on radio in the south. Found that very endearing. On his 3rd Sullivan appearance he sang Peace in the Valley, certainly not a rock 'n roll gyrating type song. The story goes it was to honor his mother as it was her favorite song (and maybe to make a statement to the world that he was not the evil person some were attempting to portray?). Highest ratings Sullivan ever had.

If you check out , the performer's during those days, they mostly stood on the stage mainly swaying, from side to side, along with the music. Elvis, was moved by music, and danced, people then were not use to seeing that and called it vulgar. Some were so against it. And against him. Check out Elvis and the black community. For his back ground.. so he was different, talented, and gorgeous. Along with humble and generous. Not a bad combination for a fine person. But those who hated him could only do so for a short time.

You have to remember that this was the 50’s . Dance movies like Elvis did were considered vulgar. He was the one who set the standard for everyone to follow, to this day. They don’t call him The King for nothing.

Hi Travis and Susie.. Before I give you some recommendations, I just wanted to tell you that I am only a subscriber ( for a long time) who loves you guys and your reactions, especially to Elvis. Travis, to answer your query re censoring Elvis from his waist down as a ploy to perhaps motivate a population of curious viewers to see him in person, it was not the case. It was Ed Sullivan who pandered to his conservative viewership complaints, and on Elvis's 3rd and final appearance in '57, put into action his history making change, that the tv camera capture Elvis from the waist up only. Steve Allen also tried " cleaning up" Elvis's image by making him wear a full tails tuxedo whilst performing and have him sing to a real hound instead of letting him do his regular moves.(Elvis spoke of his regret for ever letting Allen get his way) You have to understand that tv viewers across the nation had never seen or heard the likes of Elvis, his music, dress , vocal, and performance styles - Elvis literally "rocked" this country and changed the face of music forever. If you want to see and react to Elvis' tv performances showing a full-on Elvis, I am recommending shows from his first tv appearances. A 21 yr old Elvis kicked off 1956 with his national tv debut on the Dorsey Brothers' "Stage Show," on which he'd make six appearances. On April 3, 1956, he made his first appearance on the "Milton Berle Show," performing on the deck of an aircraft carrier and again on Berles's tv show, June '56., Elvis's two post- censorship '56 appearances on Sullivan's show. You might also want to react to three of his earliest films check out 'Love Me Tender' '56 , 'Loving You' '57, 'Jailhouse Rock' ' 57,' and 'King Creole', '58. All of the above recommendations can be found on KZbin. There is also an offical Ed Sullivan Channel that has a dedicated video showing all the Elvis appearances. Before Elvis a singer would stand in front of a microphone and not move while singing. Elvis electrified the girls with his shaky leg. and the upbeat tempo of his songs. He was once threatened with arrest if he moved on stage in Florida. A judge sat in the audience ready to haul him off to jail. Girls were forbidden to see him perform. Churches preached against him. His records were destroyed on air. He was censored in this performance and only shown from the waist up. We loved him... he looked so dangerous and therefore forbidden in those days. Everyone already knew about Elvis and gyrating his hips so not showing it wasn't a factor in Elvis success he was already huge before Ed Sullivan.

Watch Elvis' 1957 movie "Loving You" which is in color and has an AWESOME soundtrack - if you want to feel and experience what people young and old felt and experienced during 22 year old Elvis' prime. Why did Girls go crazy over Elvis' moves back then? Because they grew up and lived in a world with no male strippers, all magazine cover models were fully clothed, everything on TV was as clean as watching "MeTV" channel shows sll day - SO - the closest those girls could get to anything sexually suggestive or explicit - was watching Elvis Presley moving as he did - which crooners of the previous generation never did. To them those moves were a big deal. Nowadays Elvis saying "I'm not a king. Jesus Christ is the King..", and singing Gospel songs on National TV - would create more controversy than his stage moves ever did. Merry Christmas again! You two are great!

The networks and self-elected moral police tried to squash him, the government thought he would disappear after 2 years in the ARMY and it all backfired. He even gained more respect from the adult crowd for publicly going through his time in the ARMY doing the same things all of the other GIs had to do. They wanted him to be in the ARMY music section, but he said no I prefer to be just another draftee.

So back when Elvis began his career, segregation was in every area of life. There were white and black schools, restaurants, bathrooms, radio stations, etc. No mingling of the races was permitted. Therefore, there was white music-ballads, country, quartets, etc-think Frank Sinatra, Andy Williams, Doris Day, etc-all of these artists stood still when they sang-and drums were not used in the band. Along comes Elvis, who grew up among and was totally comfortable with black people and what was considered their music-Rhythm and blues, and gospel, and with white music country, big band, ballads, etc. Elvis fused these forms of music and his voice sounded more like a black person, he bought clothes from Beale Street , he hung out with black musicians, and he went to a Pentecostal church where ecstatic dancing to music was a form of worship. All of this is why he was called the Hillbilly Cat, and the Memphis Flash when he first started. He was the first white person to sing the kind of music that would make people want to move. This is what Sam Phillips was looking for-he wanted to break down the racial barriers in music by finding a white man that sounded like and had the rhythm of a black musician -Elvis did that not just in his music but in his treatment and inclusion of black musicians. This is why he was so controversial!! It scared people and upset their “sacred” institutions and their ability to feel superior to others. Essentially, Elvis was saying through his fusion of music styles, his movement, and life, we are all the same and we need to stop segregation. This is really what people hated. Also, white people of that time were much more reserved and not comfortable with displays of emotion-AND ELVIS BROUGHT OUT THE EMOTION IN HIS FAN! This also made parents uncomfortable-they were taught to suppress emotion. Black people were much more comfortable with expressing emotion as they had been crying out to God, and men, for years to change their plight. I personally think God used Elvis to answer hundreds of years of prayers in order to release people in our country, both black and white, from the bondage of fear and segregation. He did much more than change music-he helped to change our whole way of life.

It was not just hips, it was the sexual vocal delivery and expressions. Also the fact that a male performer was so joyyfully ok with being a spectacle for young women's sexual desire in what was termed as " black style". He was called a white boy with black hips by conservatives. Racism, sexism, puritanical hold on young women's sexuality, emerging teen market- all contributed to his notoriety. The fact that he sang so well and was good looking made it difficult to control. By all accounts his concerts were very wild and he significantly toned down his act for TV.

Sullivan turned Elvis down at first because of his movements. Elvis then made an appearance on the Milton Berle show. Berle said that after Elvis' appearance, Berle received approx. 500,000 PAN letters (not fan letters) because all of Elvis had been shown. And although the mail was negative, it caused Berle's ratings to top Sullivan for the 1st time, which irritated Sullivan greatly & caused Sullivan to rethink his original decision of turning Elvis down, & so Sullivan then agreed to have Elvis appear on his show. What people who did not grow up during that era do not realize is how different life was -- many adults had lots of hang ups, life in general was more sedate & calm. Think of such singers as Perry Como, Tony Bennet, Frank Sinatra, Doris Day, Peggy Lee & how sedate their performances were -- almost like they had a shot of sedation -- they had great voices but they didn't move & there was not the power & emotion that Elvis conveyed. Even the 50's r'n'r & doo-wop groups were tame. Then along comes Elvis. Adults were not ready for that yet, even tho' there was nothing wrong w-what he did -- just some moving around, the adults saw it as something not nice.
