The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

hey guys, this is a goodie for you. early 1957, tv is in its infancy, and elvis presley is early in his career. Just watch the swag and control he brings..... fronting 50m people live on television, at 22 years old. incredible - and so humble. notice he is being filmed at this stage only from the waist up but he still manages to leave his mark towards the end. i do believe this is where the term "express yourself" started period - great song as well. cheers, matt

I love Elvis in the 1950's. He was so young and even with all the charisma he had there was an innocent sweetness to him. Don't Be Cruel was Elvis' mother Gladys favorite song of his. Elvis is a classic that can never be replaced. God broke the mold when he made him. Thank you for a great reaction!

Elvis's 3rd appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show was the only time anyone made a concerted effort to censor him. It was also their last chance. Elvis appeared on TV only 4 more times in his entire career and those productions were made to star just him.

I fell in love with Elvis in the late 70s when I was 11. My reaction to his songs and his looks was wild. I can`t imagine what it must have been like for the girls in the 50s. He was cool, sexy, beautiful, well-dressed, provoking, humble, respectful, God-loving, and sweet as hell, all in one person. Who else combines such qualities? People didn`t know where to put him. His assets seemed to be contradictory. In a world where people have always been used to thinking in black-and-white terms, his colorful persona and complex personality made no sense. To this day, Elvis has been a quite misunderstood artist. They said that he was a rebel. Yes, he was, but not in the way people believed him to be. Most people, who know nothing about Elvis, have always seen him as a shallow and simple figure, even someone they laugh at. And although nothing could be further from the truth, that is the reason that so many people aren`t interested in his music. As soon as people are prepared to dig deeper into the Presley world, they are bombarded with unexpected data and surprises. Many of those who learn to know more about Elvis` music and achievements, consequently become Elvis fans. He is an American National Treasure and at school, children should learn about his music and his historical weight. It is a disgrace that so many Americans know nothing about a man who sacrificed a lot, was attacked on a ridiculous scale, and changed the worldwide musical arena, and opened the door to so many different artists. Without Elvis, Michael Jackson, the King of Pop simply wouldn`t exist.

One of my favorites!!!! After several appearances on his shiw, Ed Sullivan actually told his audience that Elvis was “a thoroughly good boy” who was very respectful to everyone on the show. I guess that was a big change to all the fuddy-duddies who thought Elvis and his music was from the devil!

When you asked “what’s he looking at?” …. you might have noticed that Elvis had been checking the monitor a few times and right near the end he realises he is only being shown from the high waist up. He’s not happy! His response …. puts in a deliberate wiggle for the live audience and let their reaction tell the folks at home what they are missing out on. I don’t think he knew beforehand that he was being censored during his appearance on the show.

This performance always got me. By this time he’d sealed his place in rock history and his moves were well known, and he’d already been derided a bit by the older generation for his swivelin hips and sex appeal. So He plays it so cool for most of the song here but can’t help himself and just cuts it loose on the last verse. No one ever came close to Elvis. This guy had it ALL!!!!

Elvis was fond of a pomade called Black and White. You can still buy it. This whole performance is based on Elvis seeing Jackie Wilson do this song in Vegas. Elvis tells the story of seeing Jackie in Vegas on the Million Dollar Quarter recording. In the recording he does an imitation of Jackie's more over the top version and he's perfectly imitating that in this performance. If you watch his previous live version it's much more subdued. In a way this performance is kind of an inside joke which is why Elvis laughs at parts in the song.

The Jourdanaires were Elvis's back up singers on every movie and record he produced for 15 years. He met them early on in his career and he told them if he ever made a record he wanted them to record with him. He knew a good thing when he heard it. They loved them and they loved him. Only Elvis ❤

That was great. You've got to check out him doing hound dog from earlier the year before when he was 20 or 21. It's in June of 1956 I think. It's on the Milton Borough variety show. And it's he doing hound dog and it's the thing that set off all the backlash about you can't film them from the waist down and stuff. Because at the end of the song when they thought it was over, Elvis just kept it going at half speed and it just kind of turned into a burlesque almost and it's one of the most amazing brief Snippets of black and white television video in Rock history. He did that and everybody went nuts. People loved it but a lot of people hated it.

At that point in his career Elvis was labled as crude and vulgar by most "older mainstream" adults. Ed Sullivan agreed to have him on the show but would only allow him to be filmed from the waist up. Even as young as he was, Elvis handled it with so much grace and dignity. The ultimate entertainer. The King
