Barry was born in 1943 and this song was released in 1974, so he was 31 years old here. Given this was his first hit song and it was the early/mid 1970s, he was older than most pop stars starting out. I remember that most promotional information printed about him erroneously reported he was born in 1946 to shave a few years off his age and make the public think he was 28 years old (likely a move by Arista Records president and guru Clive Davis). As for the set for the video, the very first shot shows the exterior of a camera before switching to the scene of him inside of the camera (which is the set). I have never been able to find out WHY he is on that set for that song, as they have nothing to do with each other. I wondered if, perhaps, he taped the video as part of a TV appearance somewhere? I don't know. Anyway, Barry's had a ton of hits that you can react to including "I Write The Songs", "Weekend in New England", "It's A Miracle", "Looks Like We Made It", "Ships", and on and on.

"Mandy" is the one that started it all for him in1972. He was Bette Midler's piano player, then went on to a very successful solo career in the 70's. He also produced Bette Midler's two biggest albums. Barry was routinely bashed by critics in the 1970s for overly-dramatic songs, but his fans loved him.

This song I remember playing a lot when it came out. It is actually a cover and reworked version of Brandy by Scott English which was released in 1971.
