Barry Manilow came from very humble roots as a young Jewish boy. He wrote a lot of commercial jingles, but he evolved into an AMAZING artist! If it makes you feel any better, I always tear up hearing this song and the beautiful way the music and his voice soar!

I'm glad people are recognising how great Barry is..he was MEGA in the 70's.. and early 80's..I saw him in concert over here🇬🇧.. he was absolutely Brilliant..his voice just like the record..yeah some people say its cheesy or smaltzy..but I love it..he is such a talented singer songwriter too..please listen to Weekend In New England.. A Linda song..Even Now is a heartbreaker..i first saw him on Parkinson..which was a british talk show..he was the piano player for Bette Midler then called The Divine Miss M..and she bigged him up and said he's going to be a big star and let him sing too..

My mother knew Barry back in the day when he was still writing advertising jingles. He worked in the office down the hall from hers and she would bring him food because she thought he was too skinny. She said he was a lovely young man. That's Jewish mother talk for good marriage material. Unfortunately, and while I'm guessing he would appreciate your enthusiasm, Barry is definitely gay. Yeah, broke my heart when I found out.

He's been in a relationship with his manager, Garry Kief, since 1978 and they eventually got married. It took him a long time to come out to the public because he was so afraid of disappointing his fans, but instead, he received so much love and support that he felt overwhelmed and so happy. How wonderful to be able to find that one someone you can really have a long, lasting, loving relationship with.

I just stumbled across this video. I am 57 years old so, in the '70s when Barry Manilow was just becoming known, I was a teenager. I remember when Mandy came out and was in jukeboxes all over the place. Even still, all these years later, this is my favorite song of all time. I'm glad you enjoyed it. A lot of women fell in love with Barry because of his music. Unfortunately for them, Barry is gay. I know this because my brother is gay and my brother's boyfriend back then had a twin brother who was also gay and dating Barry.

There is something so satisfying sharing a song with others - even strangers - and you can tell you both are feeling a certain emotion right at a certain part of a song and you just can tell by the reactions on their face - you both feel something similar at the same time. That is what makes these reaction videos so interesting and proves that people need each other and we are social creatures - regardless what the cable news tries to do to tear us apart!

A quick note about this song... It was originally written as "Brandy" but was renamed so as not to be confused with the song "Brandy, You're A Fine Girl" by Looking Glass. Also, Barry's manager was sure it could be a hit but when Barry sat down and played it, he said it sounded terrible. So he sat down and in order to learn it, slowed it down, changed the arrangement a bit, and when his manager heard it, he told Barry to play it just like he had it. So he sat down and played the song live with the studio musicians and that's what they used. One take. Just amazing!

I think he wrote that song about his first wife because he said he cared very much about her but she just wasn't in it for the long run because he wanted to be a professional musician and singer and songwriter and he had to be on the road promote his music with touring going to different countries and doing promoting on programs and television shows all over the world. Which kept him away he said from her long bouts of time throughout the year he went ahead and filed for divorce and he wrote the song to try to save their relationship but according to him she decided that this was not going to work

I used to date a girl who was named after this song. But, my favorite Mandy moment was in the show Angel (the Buffy spinoff) where the Vampire with a soul, Angel, has to sing this at Lorne's bar so Lorne (a green demon who owned a nightclub) could tell the future. He sang it horribly and when asked why he chose that song he replies, "Because I think it's pretty."
