By the late '80s everyone had pretty much given up on Black Sabbath ... So it was actually quite a shock to anyone still paying attention when no-name vocalist Tony Martin outperformed a string of higher-profile predecessors with his contributions to Sabbath's unexpected 1987 return to form, The Eternal Idol, then pulled off the even more remarkable feat of being invited back for a second go-round via 1989's equally satisfying Headless Cross ... This includes morbid monster-pieces such as "Kill in the Spirit World" and "Call of the Wild," which quake with simply massive power chords yet still manage to flow seamlessly into slightly more upbeat radio-friendly numbers like "Devil and Daughter" and "Black Moon." Likewise, whereas "When Death Calls" is surely one of Iommi's most spine-chilling compositions ever in terms of sheer malevolent force, the equally bewitching "Nightwing" flips the coin entirely with its delicate acoustic guitars and (dare it be said) highly romantic lyrics. In short, for those wise enough to appreciate Black Sabbath's discography beyond the Osbourne and Dio essentials, there can be no better place to start than Headless Cross or its worthy predecessor, The Eternal Idol. - excerpted from AllMusic

AMIGO!!!! This era of Sabbath was under appreciated & underrated…Tony Martin had some of the most drama free years with Sabbath….plus this album “Headless Cross” is one of their best!!! Ozzy, Dio, Gillan & Hughes were awesome bro, but Tony has such a cinematic, full & sinister voice. He was great for Sabbath & a lot of the time, I pull this album & anything Tony Martin is on before I go to Dio or Ozzy Sabbath albums….try reacting to the song Headless Cross, Devil & Daughter to start off…to go deeper, go to the album “TYR” & check out The Sabbath Stones, Valhalla, Jerusalem & Feels Good to Me…for further Martin-led Sabbath albums, check out Eternal Idol, Cross Purposes & Forbidden….it’s a great rabbit hole to go down bro 🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽

I seriously can't tell you how happy it makes me for you to hype this era of Black Sabbath!! I've loved every incarnation of Sabbath, and it always puzzles me that very few people recognize the greatness of Tony Martin's voice. While I will admit that the only original member of Sabbath that remained during this album was guitarist Tony Iommi, it was still brilliant. Perhaps the best music from this 90's era Sabbath was the album CROSS PURPOSES. Original bassist Geezer Butler played on the album and it is superb! Tony Martin never got his due credit....and that's a damn shame. 🤔

Great job! I loved it! This was an excellent suggestion! This is the great and underrated Tony Martin on vocals. Tony Martin was actually the Black Sabbath singer with the second longest tenure after Ozzy Osbourne. A real powerhouse vocalist. Of course, the usual fantastic riff by the great Tony Iommi on lead guitar. The first solo was actually played by invitation by Tony Iommi's long time great friend, Brian May of Queen.

Tony Motherfuckin’ Martin right there, Sabbath’s best singer that they ever had besides Glenn Hughes and Dio. Well seasoned singer with his respectable record of 5 albums under his belt with Sabbath and a plethora of solo work that’s just as amazing such as The Cage with Dario Mollo and or his solo album Scream. My favorite album of his has to be TYR from Black Sabbath since that is the best lineup that band has seen with Martin at the helm, the haunting force of Cozy Powell on drums, the iconic glue of the band Tony Iommi and the admirable glory of Neil Murray. I cannot recommend that album enough for how much it offers from the beginning to end.

"You have to be one hell of a singer to cover that song" Yes, yes you would, I haven't looked but I don't think I have seen anyone attempting it. funny when this came out in the 90s I was able to reach a lot of those notes, of course I am NOT a singer but we (my friends and I loved this album and tried to sing it as close to him as possible), he is one of a kind in my book.

There's definitely fewer songs from the Tony Martin era of Sabbath that are considered as good as the classics, but this is one of em. If you wanted to try another song from the Tony Martin era, Anno Mundi from the Tyr album is really great. Dude just sings his ass off. Anno Mundi has a pretty cool swagger to it. And the chorus is just sung expertly. And this is coming from someone who didn't like this era of the band for a long time, but no denying Tony Martin is far more of an elite singer than people give him credit for. Could also try Law Maker from Tyr as well. Great choice for this video. Rant over now haha.

Wow, u actually went for an obscure classic from the post-Ozzy Black Sabbath! Yeah, those later record should be given props... despite not being the original Black Sabbath. The singer Tony 'Cat' Martin is a phenomenal vocalist who delivered some stellar songs w/ Tony Iommi (guitar) from 1987 to 1995 (Ronnie James Dio did return for the 1992 album 'Dehumanizer' before bailing again in 1993)... After Ozzy Osbourne was fired in 1979, the game was on in 1980 to see who would do better - Ozzy solo... or Black Sabbath (post Ozzy) It's fair to say Ozzy Osbourne won that race by 1984, selling 2 - 3 times more records and selling out concerts worldwide. the original Black Sabbath (Ozzy, Iommi, Butler & Ward) reunited in 1985 for a Live Aid charity set, but legal fights between managers and agents seemingly made it impossible to go forward... In 1986, Tony Iommi (guitar) finished a solo album 'Seventh Star' w/ his pick of stellar musicians - Eric Singer (drums), Dave 'The Beast' Spitz (bass) and Sabbath keyboardist (the late) Geoff Nicholls... former Deep Purple bassist/ vocalist Glenn Hughes did the vocals. However, under pressure from Warner Bros. records, Iommi released it as Black Sabbath feat. Tony Iommi... Unfortunately, Glenn Hughes was struggling w/ drugs and alcohol and couldn't perform live... he was sacked (Iommi did work w/ Glenn Hughes on solo albums years later) ... (the late) Ray Gillen joined Sabbath on vocals, but poor tickets sales scrapped the tour soon after... Iommi began recording another Sabbath album 'Eternal idol' w/ Ray Gillen on vocals, but eventually sacked the singer and opted to re-record vocals w/ vocalist Tony 'Cat' Martin and released 'Eternal idol' in late 1987, but sales were not better. Warner Bros. dropped Iommi's Sabbath. Ray Gillen would form the band Badlands and released 2 stellar hard rock albums 'Badlands' (1989) w/ Eric Singer on drums... and 'Voodoo Highway' (1991)... Eric Singer joined Kiss on drums in 1992 after the death of their longtime drummer Eric Carr in 1991. Ray Gillen passed away from AIDS in 1993. Black Sabbath (w/ singer 'Cat' Martin) released this 1989 album 'Headless Cross' and a 1990 album 'Tyr' w/ (late) drummer Cozy Powell, but fans were not interested... When the reunion w/ Ronnie James Dio fell apart in 1993, 'Cat' Martin returned on vocals for the album 'Cross purposes' in 1994 and 'Forbidden' in 1995... but Sabbath were literally playing clubs in 1996. Thankfully, Ozzy and Geezer Butler (bass) reunited w/ Black Sabbath in 1997 to tour for Ozzfest '97... Bill Ward (drums) rejoined soon after. Cozy Powell (drums) passed away in a motorbike accident in 1998... his legendary drums can be heard on numerous records by Rainbow, Cinderella, and Yngwie Malmsteen. Singer Tony Martin has released solo records... his latest being 'Thorns' in 2022... Tony Iommi said a collection of the Sabbath albums w/ Tony Martin on vocals will be released in 2023.

And after I heard it, I went out and bought it. Say what you want about Ozzy and Black Sabbath, and a lot has been said. But when it came to music, he was always at the top of his game! You're right, this is Dio, not Ozzy. Each has his own appeal. Sabbath also had other vocalists, even Glenn Hughes (formerly of Deep Purple "Mk.III" on bass/vocals). Ozzy was on everything from the start thru Never Say Die. Dio did 2 studio albums and a live album, then Ian Gillan from Deep Purple Mk.II did the album Born Again (which IMO is the heaviest of the Sabbath studio albums). The mixture continues with various vocalists, including Dio and Ozzy rejoining at times. After a longer period with Dio as the group "Heaven and Hell", Ozzy rejoined for their last studio album "13" and supporting tour. Dio's career has many of the same changes from group to group to solo. There is a lot of "pass around" in rock, with players moving from group to group. Much of that is caused by the nature of the industry in that most players are "Hired Guns", players who are only hired to fill a role in a solo artist's band or in another band who needed a singer, drummer, etc. That is why you will see them performing with different bands on tour. They get paid per gig, per tour, or per performance doing a bit for a studio album. There are several excellent movies about these players: 1. Hitsville USA - The making of the Motown sound 2. The Wrecking Crew - The L.A. studio musicians set who performed on most big hits of the 50s-70s 3. Muscle Shoals - Muscle Shoals, Alabama studio that provided the brass sections for so many hits 4. Hired Guns - The current breed of rock/metal musicians for hire, including the drummer for most of Billy Joel's early career, but as a hired gun, not a band member 5. Classic Albums - Most of the "Classic Albums" video series touches on the subject of Hired Guns at various points Finally, Steve Lukather was a strange example. He was both a Hired Gun and a band member, mostly at the same time. Steve came up as the members of The Wrecking Crew were retiring, and the newer, heavier rock was taking over. His high school friend Mike Porcaro had an older brother Jeff, who played drums as a studio musician and often played with Steely Dan. So he grew up, taught himself guitar, and joined that era of studio musicians. In the late 70s a few of them formed the band Toto, which saw major hits on radio and MTV airplay, including Africa, Rosanna, and Hold the Line. Lukather also did all the guitar work for Michael Jackson's Thriller album except for the famous 30-second solo by Eddie Van Halen for the song "Beat It". Luke has a great book and even reads/recites the audiobook himself, which makes it an excellent way to learn about all this from the mouth of the guy who actually did it all.

@@wesw6840 Tony Martin sung in 5 albums with Black Sabbath, The Eternal Idol (pretty good), Headless Cross (amazing), TYR (epic and amazing), Cross Purposes (good) and Forbidden (mediocre). You should listen to all the Sabbath albums with him except maybe for Forbidden, he is an amazing underrated singer.

Black Sabbath is Tony Iommi. Wherever he goes, he takes Black Sabbath with him. Simple as that. And every REAL Black Sabbath fan knows this.
