This song has been covered by 161 Rock Bands. Including The Beatles, Aerosmith, Elvis and on and on. Rickie Medlocke's Grandfather wrote the song. His name is Shorty Medlocke. He played the harmonica on the album. Rickie Medlocke was originally part of Early Lynyrd Skynyrd as a drummer(1971,72 and again in 1996 as lead guitarist). Lynyrd Synyrd's song "Ballad of Curtis Loew"; Shorty Medlocke was one of the inspirations for the song. These guys are part Blackfoot native American and white American. This is definitely blues. Here in the south Black Americans invented blues using blue notes and also using bottleneck slide which can be traced back to Africa where people used glass on string instruments. Black Americans play a crucial ro role in developing blues rock and roll and even country. Country music and blues had a baby together and named it rock and roll and it was all born here in the South even jazz which was born in New Orleans. I love our country I love the history of our music I know the history of our country has a dark past but everyone wasn't evil back then there were some good people that come together and made great music which is now known as American music.
