Rickey Medlocke was one of the two drummers (for a short period) in Skynyrd. He formed Blackfoot. When Blackfoot folded, he joined Skynyrd again as a guitarist currently. The harmonica is played by Shorty Medlocke who was Rickry's grandfather. Blackfoot and Skynyrd are forever intertwined.

Song Facts: This song was written by bluegrass and Delta blues musician "Shorty" Medlocke - the grandfather of this band's frontman Rickey Medlocke. The song is best remembered for its harmonica intro, performed by Shorty, which mimics the sound of a steam locomotive blowing its whistle, pulling out of the station, and accelerating to full speed.

Wow. Does THAT bring back some memories. Old enough to drive, but too young to go to the campus bars. We would queue it up to so they would hear the last of the harp, and right into the heavy riffs. We’re Legendary (in out 16 year old brains) Think opening scene from Dazed and Confused! Lol. It’s a banger! I feel like kinda old! 😂😂👍. setting the scene, early 80's at the strip(the place everyone drove to and then loitered up and down making your presence known, people watching, gathering the talk on where the party is going to be, who is going to be there, and social networking for young adults), when the DJ played an unpopular song or one that just didn't meet the demand of the moment, this was on the tape that everyone went to in its place. Music was played loud and hard and this song carried respect in all the genres of groups of people.

A lot of people say that Rickey was just a "studio musician" for Skynyrd when he played drums for them, but that's an easily provable load of BS. Look at the Skynyrd's First & Last / re-released as the Complete Muscle Shoals album (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skynyrd%27s_First_and..._Last) Rickey has sole or co-writing credits on 6 songs. How many bands will spend their money to record songs written by the studio musician??? Nobody. Also, don't forget Blackfoot Bassist Greg T. Walker also played Bass for Skynyrd around the same time that Rickey played drums for them (he's on the F&L/MS album too). These guys lives and bands are totally intertwined -- friends growing up, friends together in various incarnations of their bands, friends forever. Oh, and Preacher's Daughter is an absolute BANGER!

Rickey Medlocke was not one of Skynyrd's first guitarists. He was their drummer from '71-'72, before leaving to rejoin Blackfoot. He aslo sings a few Skynyrd tunes which can be found on the compilation "Skynyrd's First...and Last". When he rejoined Skynyrd in '96, it was as a guitarist. He can play banjo, guitar, drums, mandolin, dobro and keyboards.

My first concert... Alpine Valley outdoor amphitheater East Troy, WI (Where Stevie Ray Vaughan died) 1982, Outlaws and Blackfoot. My 2 favorites when I was 18. What a time!

When this album broke I saw Blackfoot in a NJ bar The Showplace. I lived in Soprano Land (the Caldwells) at the time attending HS. Blackfoot had also lived in N Jersey and had made some noise. I was attending a house party when a friend said they were going to see a band. As it was snowing big time I said " why "? He said he was going to see a band of Indians that played Southern Rock and one of them was in Skynyrd. I said " this I have to see ". So we got to the bar they had enough gear to play a 2000 seat theater. Then the roadies came on stage and started throwing cotton balls into the folks down front. Great show! To hear that album live that fresh was fantastic. They were a well rehearsed machine. Most people don't know that a lot of the Southern rock bands came to NJ for a chance to break and get paid

Also mentioned before search Fanny-original gig watch it and pick whatever song you want. So many bands mentioned them as inspiration, they are so tight, and all they deserve RRHOF status Jean Millington: bass guitar, vocals June Millington: guitar, vocals Nickey Barclay: keyboards, vocals Alice de Buhr: drums, vocals. Love them all quintessential professionals, when they get to jamming I don't want it to quit. Alice just destroys it on the drums, Nicky's piano, and vocals. All their covers are seriously great renditions of the originals, such as the Beatles Hey Bulldog, Cream's Badge, Steven Stills Special Care. David Bowie was spot on with his assessment.

Talk about a road song in a muscle car, the Blackfoot song “Road Fever” reminds me of my best buddy coming towards me down a relatively narrow city street driving a 1966 Mustang equipped with a loud, badass stereo and I heard him coming from blocks away as he was blasting the song Road Fever with the windows down. The music echoed and reverberated between the buildings. I laughed and teased him about that for years. It was as if the song was propelling the car down the street on its own power. Lol.

I owned the car stereo before I bought my first car in 1980. I bought a 1970 Nova. I played the hell out of this album on cassette. I sold that car and bought a 71 Mustang. Continued to play the hell out of this album!

I first heard of Blackfoot, and this song in 1979, on the New City area's FM radio station. That same day, like I usually did after hearing a great new song, from an unfamiliar band, I drove to the record store and bought the album.

Blackfoot Strikes is epic! And that was Rickey Medlocke's grandfather Shorty playing harmonica in the intro.
