"He just desecrated the microphone." That's actually exactly what he was trying to say. I thought it was just Bo being edgy, but it's literally a statement of how people desecrate music.

Its clear you are visibly uncertain about the saluting - he does this to highlight just how easy it is to get people to follow, regardless of what you do or say, and this is the downfall of many things, in this case its music, but in history its been governments and WW2
@evanroberts13612 жыл бұрын
Reminds me of Ron Jones, a college professor back in the ‘60s. He did an experiment with his students where he had them start following stricter rules, performing gestures to greet each other, etc. In the end he revealed what they had become without even realizing it. It was an experiment to show how easy it is for Americans to become Nazis
@zaktilzer51302 жыл бұрын
I mean... WWII took very specifuc conditions to happen, and for people to look for a radical change.
@pbjbagel2 жыл бұрын
Slight disagreement. It fits the message of the song. He has gotten the audience to sing along to his innocent, catchy chorus, while the Nazi salutes metaphorically reveal the true evil behind the manufactured pop music industry. Bo does this at many instances in the song where you can hear the character of Satan come out of his voice. Getting people to follow can be bad, yet it can also be good, e.g., in the case of rallying to fight against Nazis.

The part he is trying to really emphasize isn't the marketing, but the intentional exploitation of children for profit at the expense of and in the name of Art. You figure out a way to make me at 40 years old buy an extra pack of gum at the checkout, fair game. But this systemic manipulation isn't just marketing, it's a form of grooming against a demographic that hasn't fully matured and is very vulnerable. It's abhorrent and evil. Hence the devil bit.

Fun (and often overlooked) fact: The "'Oh, hello Satan!' *-gagging on microphone-* 'MMM, SATAN, YOU TASTE SO GOOD!" bit is a direct reference to Bill Hicks' rant against the music industry that pushes bands like New Kids on the Block with a society that also claims that rock-n-roll is "the Devil's music". It's just a damned shame that people miss that reference, because it means people (especially of my generation) have already forgotten about Bill Hicks.

One thing bro, sometimes you take actions so serious that you believe one stands for a gesture they are making fun of. The solute is the perfect example, context is everything, within the confines of the song, he's obviously not supporting with his salute but rather calling out against it. Another example of this is with the Nirvana song, Ra** me, a lot of people thought that song was terrible messaging, when in fact Kurt wrote it in opposition of the people who never called it out. I know you are who you are, but don't be afraid to slow down and try to determine the angle the artist is coming from.
