So, these two wrote "How Will I Know" for Whitney Houston's first album. When asked to write a song for her second, the first one they turned in was "Waiting for a Star to Fall." It wasn't quite what Whitney and her team were looking for. Their next submission was "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)." So Whitney got a huge hit, George and Shannon got a huge hit, and the right decisions were made all around. But I do like to imagine this song in Whitney Houston's voice. That would have been incredible too.

When falling in love was fun - young, energetic, pure joy even when apart from each other...I think psychologists call this limerence. Did you watch the reaction video throughout? Today most music listening is skip to the best part, listen, then skip to the next track. In the 80's, most songs were heard on the radio or MTV, and songs had to be heard from beginning to end - this informed the mid-tempo growing to a faster upbeat crescendo of pop music, that is like a musical sibling to the power ballads of the time. Jay seemed to really enjoy the song once it got past the bridge. He says the second part of the song saves it for him.

The way Amber reacted is what my heart does every time I listen to this song. It's a sweet pure modern rapturous love song. I thought for sure Jay would get into it at least for the fact that the love and devotion described in the song is what I see from him and Amber!!!! It's also pure late 80s pop though it was unlike anything else current at the time - was a big hit & the video was in constant rotation because it was visually beautiful and illustrated the vibe perfectly. It came out 35 years ago this past June & affects me the same way today as it did the first time I heard it. I was probably about the same age as the "Rob Squad" when this song was released, and it's one of my all-time favorites, mostly because of the joy this song represents at this period of time in my life. I was married (to the greatest woman ever, and still am, by the way, over 44 years now) with four children who were nine, five, three and one at the time. It was a very challenging time, but a joyful challenge, and it was such a great time in the life of our family...and I'm happy to say, the joy experienced then has been surpassed many, many times over. I wish everyone could experience the wonder and joy that our family has, which now consists of our grown-up "chi-dults" [adult children] and nine grandchildren, who are also blessed to have three of their great-grandparents alive and well to enjoy life with them. So, in short, this song reminds me of how blessed we are as a family is and how wonderful it is for us to enjoy life together.
