i grew up in Belfast, born there in the 70s, still here, know this song well, things maybe aren't as bad as they were in the past, the paramilitaries' no longer kill people from the other communities, instead they have turned the guns on their own communities to keep themselves in control of the streets , the peace walls separating the communities have been made higher while the paramilitaries have grown more powerful with thousands of members, this song has always made me emotional , some of the video was made where i used to hang around as a kid. i know we are living in a tinder box and that it would only take a spark to reignite the troubles, i wish more people could see what this song is saying, thank you Dolores O Riordan, may you rest in peace x

I think most people outside of Ireland have no idea that hostilities are still ongoing. I know I had no idea that there were such things as peace walls or that fighting was still ongoing in communities, it is never mentioned in the news. We knew that the warfare ended in the early 70's and the fighting still broke out for some years after but we thought that was all over long ago. I'm shocked, discouraged, and horrified to hear what you have told us.

@@christinerobinson9372 the troubles officially ended in between 1996 and 1998 with most groups declaring ceasefires to try a more peaceful political rout, some groups carried on with the military campaigns into the 2000s,, my best friend was murdered in 2000,, some small groups are still very active making some areas very dangerous for security forces , trouble at the peace walls goes on in some areas on a daily basis, it is mostly kept out of main stream media as not to give theses groups the publicity,, i remember sitting in school about 199-1995 and hearing a bomb go off, no one lifted their heads and carried on as if it didn't happen, it was so normal , when i was home that night it wasnt even mentioned on the news, this was why the IRA started targeting England more as that made the news, 1 bomb in England was worth 20 in Northern Ireland

You also need to understand this song was inspired by a remotely detonated bomb which killed two small children. There was even a period where the IRA targeted tourist attractions in England where there would be lot of children.

@@markhorton8578 the IRA negotiated with Nazis during ww2 while they claimed to be neutral. Also britian ireland scottlands history are all intertwined. Gurantee they have cross breeded over the centuries. Ira just used their narrative as an excuse for being violent. Even the people they claimed they was protecting would be killed by their bombs and they chalk it up to just part of war. Dolores words on here so truthful. It's dumb . Appropriate reaction. Very heavy song. 1916. WW1 was raging and while many Irish people went to war for" king and country", while the Republicans who wanted freedom from British rule, turned their guns against the English soldiers. It's known as "Bloody Sunday". The "cause" still exists, but the worst of the violence is over.

I thought the first Bloody Sunday was the British brought tanks to the football match and fired on the crowd? That was November 21, 1920. The soldiers killed 30 innocent people. The other one being 1972, when the British army killed 13 people who were in the civil rights march.
@garethrice6195
@garethrice6195 2 жыл бұрын
@@SImonDeLikaeble in reply to the initial comment, bloody Sunday had nothing to do with the rising of 1916. The rising began on Easter Monday 24th April 1916. In relation to the name bloody Sunday, there are four in Irish history. 1. Sunday August 31st 1913 during the Dublin lockout the metropolitan police baton charged a crowd listening to a speech by Jim Larkin. 2. Sunday November 21st 1920 Michael Collins squad and members of Dublin brigade and Tipperary brigade killed 14 British agents and soldiers in addresses around the city. In response auxiliaries and RIC surrounded croke park and shot dead 14 people. Later that night 3 captured men ( 2 high ranking IRA and one civilian ) were murdered in British custody. 3. Belfast July 10th 1921 loyalists angered by an IRA ambush the day before attacked catholic houses. 11 Catholics were killed and 150 houses destroyed. 4. Sunday January 30th 1972, at a peaceful march against internment, support company of 1st Paras opened fire killing 13 civilians. Sorry for the long reply but that's the history of our bloody Sundays, again reply is response to initial comment.

Just want to say that is real footage of how the Irish lived (live) not that long ago. "White people" are painted with the same brush. I'm Australian of Irish ancestors, dumped on an island who made a great country but now i get called a colonizer a racist because of my skin colour. I look at Ireland & they have fought so long & so hard but now they are also being told they are racists if they don't allow mass migration. Now they are fighting to keep the little bit of independence & rights they gained bc "globalism" they never colonised other countries, they only wanted independence. We need to stop looking at the World through American eyes & revenge against the colonizers. Privilege exists in all countries creeds & ethnicities.

My family is from Belfast originally (well, County Cork before that but they were Protestant...) I take it to mean that you are referring to the oppression that the Irish faced historically and attempts to eradicate the Irish language and culture etc. (They are singing in English here but I would love to see a video in the Irish language.) The Irish were ostracized after coming to North America, too, for many decades and up until the 1960s. Many hotels and establishments would not serve or hire them. They essentially lived and worked in segregated pockets of society for a time. Many Irish moved to certain cities that had a large number of immigrants and they found connection with others there (for example, there are many of Irish heritage in Boston which was a city where many from Ireland relocated to...) There are certain similarities to how the Irish were treated for a long time that echo what other groups experienced, in a sense. So I assume that is what you meant?

Irish in North America, were known as the "white nig###" (no matter the context, i despise this word without reservation!) everyone hated them; the Irish were apparently the first to befriend black folks in America due to mutual suffering. many Irish were slaves &/or Home Children (look it up, it is horrible!), or left to die in the streets through Northout America, seemingly due to heavy British influence

It's nice of you to link only attacks in London when the list of killings inflicted by English anywhere else in the world, particularly in Ireland, far outweighs anything you can imagine. If you and other colonial countries want to stop terror attacks in your country, then tell your army to stay home and stop killing civilians abroad. Terrorist groups are a reaction to colonial armies invading, and then you all treat your soldiers as heroes.
