The troubles in Ireland had gone on for decades, centuries even. Things were brutal and really really personal for people, she wrote this song after a bombing in a pub killed some children. The song is a plea to both sides to stop the killing and find another way. Its really hard to listen to and not start tearing up if you lived in the UK during this madness.

Zombie was a visceral response to the death of two children in an IRA bombing in the Cheshire town of Warrington. Lead singer Dolores O' Roiodan was a great singer unfortunately she died at 46 from accidentally drowning in her bathtub in 2018. They said she had high levels of alcohol in her system. Linger is another great song.

1916 was The Easter Rebellion, an Irish Republican insurrection against the occupying British government in Ireland that went on until The Good Friday Peace Accord of 1998 was signed by both govt's. "The Troubles" was at its worst from the late 1960's-1998. 1972 was the pinnacle of the violence, lots of lives were lost in the bombings, mostly civilians. N Ireland has its own parliament in Belfast but to this day is still technically part of The U.K. and separate from The Republic of Ireland, though it does have an open border now. Ireland was part of the UK not a British colony like India, Australia,New Zealand and Canada etc A part of the UK United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland It wasn't a colony or a dominion So there wasn't a occupying British force Because Ireland and Irish people were British at the time Irish parliament voted to join Great Britain and make the United Kingdom in 1801 Yes you wanted independence which is your right but it wasn't a occupation That's like saying Quebec is being occupied by Canada which isn't true

bad wolves also has a cover of this so you might have heard that one too as far as the meaning of the song, this was inspired by the IRA bombing in Warrington, Cheshire, England on March 20, 1993. Two children, Jonathan Ball and Tim Parry, were killed. The IRA (Irish Republican Army) is a militant group that was determined to remove British troops from Northern Ireland. Lead singer Dolores O'Riordan claimed that "Zombie" speaks about "the Irish fight for independence that seems to last forever." The lyrics even say, "It's the same old theme since 1916." Like the responsive works of Yeats, Heaney and U2, the Cranberries claim they wrote "Zombie" to be a "song for peace, peace among England and Ireland." >>

This is a very difficult one to comment on, as I personally experienced a car bomb in Dublin in 1975. The roof of the car blew into the air, over a wall and Iron railings and a whole building, and landed about 50 m. from me. It's the sight of it and the boom which keep coming back to me, and irrational feeling of total hopelessness as to what to do and how to react afterwords. Yes, like zombies, many of us ran out to the street where it had happened, but we were all way above our heads. I thought I saw a head lying on the street, but that may just be my blurred memories of the occasion. Two years ago, in lockdown, as I was watching Mockinjay 2, there was a car bomb scene, and I got a whacking great big flashback, and had trouble sleeping for some time. This triggered my own therapy, which was dystopian-scifi stuff, and that settled me down. Weird you may say, but we face our anxieties by challenging them up front, or we are chickens. I believe Dolores may have written this song in one go in a fury. She hit the nail on the head. I morn that she is no longer with us.

My grandad was fighting in the trenches in France WW1 and after sustaining a number of wounds was then sent out to Ireland after 1916, out of the frying pan and in to the fire. He was from an Irish family living in London and clearly survived these wars or I would not be here. The Troubles have affected us all and to a certain extent still do. The Cranberries song Zombie is a poignant reminder that the innocent suffer in conflict on all sides

A lot of people already described the Troubles and the IRA bombing that inspired this song, but in a more general sense, the song is calling out the perpetrators of violence. Their heads are so consumed with violence ("their tanks and their bombs and their bombs and their guns,in your head,") that they carelessly inflict that violence onto the next generation, who are innocent of it. In the chorus, she's basically accusing them of being dead inside

You haven't really experienced this song fully until you've heard it in the presence of Irishman. Craziest walkout I've ever heard was for a UFC Dublin card. Local Dubliner and OG veteran Aisling Daley was fighting at home for the first time in the UFC (and it would ultimately end up being her retirement fight as her next brain scan showed abnormalities) and she walked out to this. 10 thousand drunk, passionate, and extremely riled up Irishmen BELT this out. It's the only time I think I've ever heard an entire crowd singing a song like this as if it was a national anthem and they were literally all going to charge the gates of hell as one after.

For me this so perfectly reflects the frustration at perpetual, sustained violence. I was 13 when this song came out and it always reminds me of all of the sectarian violence of my childhood (thankfully mostly heard of on the news though some family and friends were in the cross-hairs) - escapes from the Soviet block, 1989 revolutions, Tiananmen Square, apartheid, Bosnian war, KKK marches, wars in the Middle East, etc. This song removes any rose colored glasses to the past and reminds us that there are still so many zombies, that it is so easy to become one.

It’s about innocent people being killed during “The Troubles” in Ireland. The song was written in response to the death of Johnathan Ball, aged 3, and Tim Parry, aged 12, both of whom had been killed in the Warrington bombings, when two IRA improvised explosive devices hidden in litter bins were detonated in Warrington, England. Ball died at the scene of the bombing as a result of his shrapnel-inflicted injuries, and five days later, Parry lost his life as a result of head injuries. 56 others were injured, some seriously. Parry died in his father's arms in a hospital in Walton, Liverpool. The two boys had gone shopping to buy Mother's Day cards on one of the town's busiest shopping streets. The singer died of an overdose at 46.

I have often thought about the power of this song and the subsequent peace that followed and took root (though people understandably still worry). Obviously no song is that powerful on its own. More and more the people were tired of the Troubles. Unionist or Nationalist, Protestant or Catholic, people were just sickened by it all. For more and more it wasn't about "winning" anymore. More and more people were just tired and heartbroken. This song spoke to, and for, those people. Not the usual narratives supporting one side or the other. It spoke for those just wanting to say ENOUGH!!!

History Lesson 101 - I know a few of people (including me) have commented about the context of the song, but the reference to 1916 and pretty much the whole start of "the troubles" was the 1916 "Easter Uprising" when the Irish (not all of them) rose against the English (not all of them) occupation of Ireland. Of course this was going on for centuries beforehand anyway (as the Scottish and Welsh) But since 1916, (Northern) Ireland has been a hotbed of contention between loyalist and separatists (on top of the brewing religious shanenigans) There have been lulls in my lifetime (and I DO remember the 1993 bombings vividly) but they are still unresolved sadly. Anyway...enjoy the song and be safe :)

This song gives me chills every time. It brings tears and heartache every time. I grew up in the 80's in Manchester, England where we were very aware of the Troubles and had regular IRA threats and actual bombings. Her keening really explains the pain.

Eminem's "in your head" is a great song that uses a sample from the song too. Yeah I was going to suggest bad wolves cover of the song. They did a great job. And when they were planning to record the song the lead singer was supposed to reprise her role and ended up passing away that day. So the other guy took over the lead vocals and they donated I think all the money from the song to her family something along those lines their music video is really well put together too and sad

The sing is about the war in northern ireland known colloquially as "the troubles". The line "It's the same old theme since 1916" refers to the easter rising in irelansmd against british rule, leading to independence in 1921. Ireland was pstitioned with some of it remaining part of the uk. This part then had a divided community which resulted in a campaign of violence to make it merge with the irish republic.

From wikepedia ""Zombie" is a protest song by Irish alternative rock[1] band the Cranberries, written by the band's lead singer Dolores O'Riordan in memory of Johnathan Ball and Tim Parry (children), who were killed in the 1993 Warrington bombings. " On the Warrington bombings, Wikepedia says "The Warrington bombings were two separate bomb attacks that took place during early 1993 in Warrington, Cheshire, England. The first attack happened on 26 February, when a bomb exploded at a gas storage facility. This first explosion caused extensive damage, but no injuries. While fleeing the scene, the bombers shot and injured a police officer and two of the bombers were caught following a high-speed car chase. The second attack happened on 20 March, when two smaller bombs exploded in litter bins outside shops and businesses on Bridge Street. Two children were killed and a total of 56 people were injured. The attacks were carried out by the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA). From the early 1970s, the IRA had been carrying out attacks in both Northern Ireland and England with the stated goal of putting pressure on the UK Government to withdraw from Northern Ireland.[2] The IRA was designated a terrorist organisation."

The song was written in response to the death of Johnathan Ball, 3, and Tim Parry, 12, who had been killed in the IRA bombing in Warrington, northwest England, when two devices hidden in litter bins were detonated. Ball died at the scene of the bombing as a result of his shrapnel-inflicted injuries and, five days later, Parry lost his life as a result of head injuries. others were injured, some seriously. Parry died in his father's arms in Liverpool's Walton hospital. The two boys had gone shopping to buy Mother's Day cards on one of the town's busiest shopping streets.

I love Dolores to the end of the world, and I mourn her with every listen of every song of theirs. What a heartbreak when we lost her. But - That being said (I'm a drummer), the drums on every Cranberries track KILL. Fergal Lawler is one of the most underrated drummers out there - and he's underrated on account of his humility. He knew Dolores was the star of the show, and he sat in the back seat. AND HE CRUSHED IT. Zombie, Disappointment, Sunday, Ridiculous Thoughts, Wanted, Salvation.... he's so tasteful. But more importantly, RIP Dolores. Shit.

This song was a direct shout to those living in the past and their own narrow twisted interpretations of Irish history . Both Irish peoples have a version and a present idea of who we are and what we should be . The song targets those hell bent on murder and death as means to win the argument . Delores did fantastic job with this song she spoke for the vast majority of Irish people on both sides . TALK DONT terrorise & kill like some mindless ZOMBIE

She's singing about the violence in Northern Ireland. She's mostly admonishing her own side (Irish Catholic) for bombing the English and the loyalist protestant ethnically English, Irish citizens. Some times Irish children even died in the attacks. I was so upset when she died. Her and Sinead are my favorite Irish lady singers. Now days I'm listening to a Norwegian lady with an accent. You should check out Aurora Asknes some time. I like her just as much as Delores O'riordan (cranberries singer).

I grew up hearing about The Troubles in Ireland on the news in the U.S. I was a young mother when this song came out. It was hard hitting and still is. All I would think at each news report "May God give Grace to them". Not long after this song came out, ceasefire was called. Besides the death of the two children in Warrington there had been many MANY deaths of innocent people on both sides. To know the true meaning, not just the grief of this one family, you have to go back and start with the Easter Sunday Uprising in 1916 and then follow The Troubles all the way to August of 1994. Hell, it goes back even further than that. Centuries even. The true meaning, to me, is they have no brains (like zombies) for continuing a fight for so long at the cost of innocent lives and is a call to stop it.

This song is so popular you could have heard it in a store playing. Once you know the meaning behind the song it hits even harder. Beautiful. A band called bad wolves redid this song a few years ago. The cranberries lead singer Delores was to sing it with them and sadly passed away a day or so before the recording. Their video shows tribute to her.

Delores was playing in England when two little boys were killed by IRA bombs planted in the middle of English cities. This is a protest song that she wrote. The Zombies are the IRA who were stuck in a struggle since 1916 when the Uk left the South or Ireland but retained the north (Northern Ireland) as the people there wanted to stay part of the United Kingdom. The IRA acted as terrorists for years, killing kids and mostly protestant people doing normal things like shopping. Random bomb attacks, shooting attacks and assassinations. Delores was so shocked by the murder of these boys that she write the son, hence the boys screaming in the video. Such a sad and brilliant song from an Irish lady who saw the pity of the struggle.
