These are the scenes of my youth - I grew up and still live in N. Ireland. The army was everywhere, machine guns were a non-remarkable thing cos they were an every day sight. Bombs & bomb scares were so common that they became almost 'normal'......our so-called 'peace' is still very fragile. R.I.P. Dolores for giving us this song💔....it is part of our history and 'The Troubles'. It's message is overwhelming powerful. Thank you so much for your sincere reaction and also for researching what the song is about, most reactors don't bother, so thank you again 👏💚

This song was written as reaction to the 2 boys killed in Warrington, England by the IRA but you can apply it to all of the futility and lifes lost in the 30+ years of the troubles. In my sleep I will always be walking the streets of West Belfast or Derry only to wake in a cold sweat and shaking a shadow of the man I once was.

Not just from Ireland. My father's family were torn apart during the troubles. My side are in London now but the Irish side were Irish Catholic. It became too difficult for my grandparents to keep their family together. She was lumped in with the Protestants because she's English (her grandparents were Irish) and so was my father. It wasn't such an issue for her living in NI in the 50's but in the 60's, it spurred too much fighting in the house and attacks outside the house. People forget that we're not separate people. Relationships have been tied within all of the countries in the region and haven't been tidy, unrelated groups. When one of us suffer, the rest of us do too, whether our governments care or not is another matter entirely.

The keening in this song - "crying", is used to pay respect to the deceased and express grief on behalf of the bereaved family. It is a skilled ritual artform used in this song. Apparently the tradition is dying out, I am not sure.

The lead singer’s name was Dolores O’Riordan. The cranberries were an Irish Rock group from Limerick. This song was released in 1994. Dolores wrote this song as an homage to Johnathan Ball and Tim Parry who were killed in 1993 Warrington Bombings and in protest to the violence. This song also remarks about generational prejudices that started in 1916 and finally ended in 1998. This song and music video are emotionally very heavy. This song covers heavy situations, impactful lyrics, and fear provoking imagery. RIP Dolores O’Riorden.

In January 2018, Dolores O'Riordan who was from Ireland, died of an accidental bathtub drowning. The band Bad Wolves(I strongly recommend listening, went to the top of the charts to #1 that year) did a cover of this song and the proceeds went back home to her 5 children.

The problems lasted decades and we're still current when she wrote it but are now resolved. He was due to collaborate with Bad Wolves with recording due to start the day she was found dead. Its why she was in London the Wolves went ahead and recorded it as a tribute giving the Royalties to her 3 children. The silver painted cherubs depicted kids killed. It was written after a bomb killed 2 young boys. Problems related to decades old British occupation. She was also saying because she was Irish she didn't agree with the fighting and was asking for a peaceful resolution. Peace came eventually.

There were a lot of bombs going off in London and I remember this one time a child was killed when a bomb was put in a rubbish bin - that's why there's that line in the song, 'A child is slowly taken. [ ... ] We were on a tour bus and I was near the location where it happened, so it really struck me hard - I was quite young, but I remember being devastated about the innocent children being pulled into that kind of thing. So I suppose that's why I was saying, 'It's not me' - that even though I'm Irish it wasn't me, I didn't do it. Because being Irish, it was quite hard, especially in the UK when there was so much tension-Dolores O'Riordan

Many click on this particular video because they KNOW how painful it is to watch...the children "playing" their war games, soldiers patrolling the streets, the lyrics speaking of violence and pain, and worst of all...the children...cherubs...angels...SCREAMING! So powerful. It is difficult for viewers to watch as well. Please don't hide your emotions, you don't need to. It's hard for your audience to see your emotions through OUR tears.

Growing up in the 80s and 90s I did not understand what I was witness to, and I guess as a child I shouldn't have. Still, it lived in the eyes of my Northern Irish Grandmother when the news showed an ever-perpetuating round of this and them and it and I. That's what impacted me. I am a firm believer that people wait to die if they want something so badly to be there. She died two hours after the Good Friday Agreement was signed. Her history brought me to many tears in the years since and always will.

@@PemisCorner The *"Army"* in the video are the good guys. They are the *British Army* who protected *Northern Irish Brits* from the terrorists who call themselves an army.

An interesting tid bit of info, and I apologise if this was already mentioned somewhere and I just didn't look hard enough, but the singer was using "Keening", a form of "vocal lament for the dead in the Gaelic Celtic tradition, known to have taken place in Ireland and Scotland." (referenced from Google search) during this song. Which, when you take that into account, makes this song hit much harder.

There is something about the sing style of "keening"that brings tears to your eyes every time. Keening is a way of morning the dead in ireland... this song is a funeral song for those poor children kill by an IRA bomb.

Song written about the death of two children Tim Parry aged 12 and Jonathen Ball aged 3, blown up by and IRA bomb as they walked by a public bin outside McDonnald's on 26th February 1993 in Warrington England. Very Sad, Peace to us all now and forever between Ireland and the UK. And may all who died from both sides now rest in peace believing that this war between is over and is gone forever.
