This song makes me know I never wanted Freddie mad at me. This was for their original manager that treated them very badly. I love it

The original first diss song written and arranged completely by Freddie. The song was written by Freddie Mercury about the band's fall-out with their original manager and Trident Studios owner Norman Sheffield. Though the song makes no direct reference to him, Sheffield sued both the band and the record label for defamation. This resulted in an out-of-court settlement, thus revealing to the public his connection with the song. Roger Taylor also noted that despite the success of "Killer Queen" and Sheer Heart Attack, the album preceding A Night at the Opera, the band was broke before the album was made. Sheffield denied that he or his companies had mistreated the band in his capacity as manager, and cited the original 1972 management contracts between himself and Queen in his autobiography published in 2013, Life on Two Legs: Set The Record Straight, in his defence. The song was recorded and mixed at Sarm East Studios in late 1975. As with "Bohemian Rhapsody", most of the guitar parts on the song were initially played on piano by Mercury, to demonstrate to Brian May how they needed to be played on guitar. Freddie Mercury later recalled that he had tried to make the lyrics as "coarse as possible", and that the other band members were initially shocked at the harsh lyrics. However, the band agreed that the song should be performed as Mercury intended, and it was recorded as such. The end result was a tour de force masterpiece.

Yeah, they were told Roger had to be more careful with his drumsticks as they couldn't replace any broken ones! It came to a head when John, who was either just married, or about to get married (I forget which, soz) needed a deposit for a house and the management said no. He was the baby of the group and Freddie looked on him like a younger brother and was fiercely protective, needless to say he did not take it well.

Trident Studios was well known for its production of "Musak", cheaply made background music you heard in elevators and shopping arcades. Consider the verse: Work my fingers to my bones I scream with pain I still make no impression Seduce you with his money-make machine Cross-collateralize, (big-time money money) Reduce you to a muzak-fake machine Then the last goodbye It's a rip-off

This song was actually about a manager who screwed the band over. Even after reaching good success, the band was desperately poor. Two or three albums in and Freddie (the most well off of the bunch) could still barely afford a two bedroom flat. Roger said they knew something was wrong when they saw the manager with a few new Rolls Royce while they had nothing. The guy was such a cheapskate that he told Roger to stop hitting the drums so hard because they couldn't (more like wouldn't) afford to replace his sticks so often. So in revenge, Queen wrote this which is pretty much the original diss track. As for what you should react to next, you should react to the One Vision documentary (I know it's long but it's SUPER interesting) then watch the One Vision music video after to see the full song! Also highly recommend Action this Day (live at the Bowl) and Dragon Attack (live at Montreal).

Also -- please listen to "Flick of the Wrist" = the ORIGINAL Freddie "diss" song -- upshot: do not mess with Fred! "Freddie Mercury never explained whether the unpleasant character in the song was based on anyone in particular.kzbin.info/www/bejne/o6OkoZSOn5qEo6M " nevertheless - you would never want to be on Freddie's bad side... :)

A perfectly executed diss track towards their former manager. By the time they dropped Sheer Heart Attack, the band had a decent amount of success. While their manager was busy flexing about buying a new Jaguar, the band themselves were living near poverty. For obvious reasons, Freddie crafted this flawless diss in an exquisite fashion

You should React to *Queen - '39 (Official Lyric Video).* It's a Very deep song written by _Brian May_ (the guitarist) *AND also Sung by Brian.* (freddie and roger on background vocals). Brian May is an astrophysicist and '39 has a lot to do with Space and traveling back and stuff. It's also more Country than a Rock song. But thats Queen, they switch between genres and everything sounds good. (but they are still a Rock band)

Thats the beauty of Queen, you name the type of music, they sang it! Another song that is a similar precursor to this is Flick of the wrist (live a the rainbow recommended). sort of a cautionary ballad that with the flick of the wrist, sign a deal with the devil.

@@dana_brooke_27 Yep, you're completely right. John Reid (along with their lawyer, Jim Beach) was actually the one who helped get Queen out of the awful mess with the Sheffield bros and sort out their finances. :)
@dana_brooke_273 жыл бұрын
@@melissabattles3196 Along with John Deacon who later handled their finances...who still is very involved with Queen's financial stability. Everyone thinks John has nothing to do with Queen. He just doesn't perform which really keeps him out of Brian and Roger's circle. He's all behind the scenes. They say he had no involvement in the movie too. Yet his son has a cameo. Don't sneeze or you'll miss it. That shows John still is involved.. Don't you think?
@melissabattles31963 жыл бұрын
@@dana_brooke_27 Yes, very true! Also, I had no idea his son had a cameo in the film! Must look this up immediately LOL! Even though I'm 36 years old (I was born just a couple of months before their Live Aid performance), I'm sad to say I came to the fandom mostly through the film recently (I know, the SHAME! Not technically my fault, though! Long story: raised in a controlling, cult-like religious environment which labelled any music even vaguely like Queen's "of the devil." So spent most of my life indoctrinated to think the same, grrrrr. I've finally seen the light, LOL!) So here I am, a humbled newbie on the most brilliant music journey of my entire life. I know the film got so much wrong, but it'll always have a special place in my heart because of introducing me to the best band and singer in the world. There will NEVER be other band for me now that can hold a candle to Queen. I've got so much catching up to do! Heehee, so excited! :D
@dana_brooke_273 жыл бұрын
@@melissabattles3196 I'm a bit older then you. I have a daughter a few years younger then you. I remember the first time I heard "Killer Queen" it was the summer 74...I was 13yrs old. I'll save you the math I'm 60yrs old. My friends older brother let us listen his album. I loved it immediately. But I really started getting into Queen with the "Night of the Opera" album. Yeah I loved "Bohemian Rhapsody" but the rest of the album made me the fan I am today. Of you haven't heard the entire album.. You must hear it. It's nothing like any other was doing or has done yet. The album is genius. So many different genre of music in one album. I got more into the previous albums when I got older. I think some of their best work was the "Opera" and before. I'm into Progressive Rock. They were progressive in the beginning and hard rock. They ended up doing pop but still exploring different styles of music. And that's probably what your hearing now. The early albums really showed Freddie's ability to sing. If you haven't heard much of it..you should check out their early works if music. It's amazing. Like the song's "Liar" "White Queen" (live is best the early songs.) "March of the Black Queen" is phenomenal and "Flick of the Wrist" "My Fairy King" "Lily of the Valley" is beautiful. Freddie's voice was so young and strong. That's just a few songs. "Seven Seas of Rye" Some of my favorites. "Great King Rat"..."The Fairy Fellers Masterstroke" The Night comes Down".. Doing Alright"Goin' Back""Never more" "Now I'm Here" And the great... "In the Lap of the G-ds" I don't know how many of these songs you already know. Another one better live in their early years. Live at The Rainbow is great show for you to check out. On KZbin in their mid and early seventies shows are best. Watch their show live from the "A Night at the Odeon 1975". Some of their best performances that night. Okay I'll stop now I can go on forever. But don't close yourself off to other music in the 70's. There were some great bands back then. Extraordinary Bands. A lot of great music! I love them all!🎶😉🎶 Also story about your family and music...I've heard similar stories. My older sister became born-again. And believed rock music was evil. She gave me all her albums and cd's. Worked out well for me..Lol!
