El DeBarge wrote this when he was 15 or 16 years old living in Detroit. El didn't want to record it after he moved to LA because he thought it was corny. His brother (James or Marty) convinced him to record the song for the group DeBarge. Little did El know it would become one of DeBarge's biggest songs.

Yes....but I believe it was his brother Chico who he was referring to in the interview with Brian McKnight. There were two other songs that El and him discussed as well. Very good interview by the way. Blessings!

And if they hadn't had such f***ed up parents and upbringing, they probably would have been able to capitalize more on their gifts. But they were emotionally and mentally damaged young people who all turned to self medication or self destruction to address those issues.

This is such an awesome song Ms. Bunny. I saw your bro El on the Brian Mcknight talk show some years back. El said he thought is was too whack to put on the album, but in my opinion, it's a MASTERPIECE! The build-up chords from the verse to chorus, and the killer harmonies make the lyrics very convincing. Also on the longer version, I love the ending. After the harmony stops singing "time" and El is still playing, it sounds like someone is slowly closing a "story book." Last but not lease, it's in C major. For some reason I have always felt that the key of C symbolizes truth and sincerity. That seals the deal for me, I'm a believer! lol P.S. could you please tell El what i said, if you get the chance. 😇

I've been a debarge fan and switch 42 years now and a good friend of bunny debarge El debarge is on tour now he's such a humble person when he meets his fan till this day no one has a better angel harmonic voice then them El just turned 60 years old on june 4th but looks 40 He also has a new single out called 4 u I die he played a snipet of it on his Instagram page he's also a proud grandpa of 7 grandkids his son El jr has a girl and a boy his daughter adris has 2 girls name eva and princess Ellie which she name after her father El debarge I thought that was an birthday honor also his son tanen has a little girl and his daughter kyndall has 2 girls name cremson and Kay Kay also the city of Michigan motor car company is coming out next year with a new cadalic named after El called the El debarge car also El is writing an autobiography on his childhood all the way to motown stardom just 3 days ago his friend Shiela E. And el just did a jam session together 😊😊👍

Yeah, I really loved growing up to their music. DeBarge was definitely one of the best family bands to ever do it! Great songwriters, producers and performers. It's too bad their family had so many drug issues, they'd likely would have put out even more great music.

They weren’t underrated lol...unfortunately they were being severely physically and sexually abused by their father while eventually developing substance abuse addictions; all while trying to manage their careers! It had nothing to do with their fans not appreciating their talents. ✌🏾

This one is my favorite by them. JJ don't know if you know but James the guy in the middle behind Bonnie was married to Janet Jackson for a very short period in the 80's. Also rumor has it that Janet had a child by him as well. I know back in the day Janet and family denied it but the subject resurfaced recently when there was talks of Janet's autobiography.
