Well rainbow was actually his 2nd band. Elf was his 1st he formed in 67 he sang and played bass. Richie blackmore formed rainbow in 75 with elf members and only kept Dio

Liliac’s cover version of this song is phenomenal, and their version of Rainbow in the Dark got the attention of Wendy Dio, Ronnie’s widow. She personally invited them to perform at the Ride for Ronnie motorcycle ride and concert. Definitely check them out, the lead singer Melody modeled her singing after Ronnie James Dio. She is only 17 in those videos and her brothers and sister in the band range from 12-20. They were supposed to play at Rocklahoma but it was canceled due to the Pandemic and they are going to be on America’s Got Talent in the next few weeks.

If you really haven't paid attention to Dio I highly recommend you listen to Black Sabbath's stuff off of Heaven and Hell, Mob Rules or Dehumanizer (3 albums they've done with Dio). Especially Heaven and Hell, a masterpiece of an album!

I was first introduced to Black Sabbath with their "Heaven and Hell" album and ever since then I've been a fan of Ronnie. That album was like a bible to me. Then I went back through Ronnie's catalog and was just flabbergasted by all the projects he was part of. An AMAZING talent! He set the bar for Metal singers. Ronnie James Dio - maybe The most liked and respected voice in metal. (And a wonderful person too btw. Another one who left us too soon, 10 years ago...) He first rose to fame with Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow (Ritchie Blackmore of Deep Purple that is). -Man on the Silver mountain -Long live Rock 'n Roll -Stargazer (long epic) -Tarot Woman -Gates of Babylon -Catch the Rainbow (quieter song, but the live performances were extended explosively) -and really nearly everything else from that era, personally I reccommend any live set (there is only one filmed concert: Munich 1977) Then he followed Ozzy in Black Sabbath, and the 2 albums 'Heaven and Hell' and 'Mob Rules' are just amazing! (and their later collaborations too to a degree) -Neon Knights -Die Young -Heaven and Hell -Mob Rules -Children of the Sea, Lady Evil, Voodoo, Falling of the Edge of the World, ....... also nearly everything ;) (Recently that lineup toured and recorded under the band name 'Heaven and Hell' btw, to avoid confusion) After that he formed the band DIO, with changing lineups over the years. -Holy Diver -Rainbow in the Dark (a bit pop-y) -The Last in Line -Egypt -We Rock -Don't talk to strangers -And much more to like here, but I guess people will have recommended the essential songs anyway. Dio actually started his career singing doo wop in Ronnie and the Red Caps. Then Blues rock in Elf, where he opened for Deep Purple and eventually formed a band called Rainbow with Purple's guitarist Ritchie Blackmore. Then he joined Black Sabbath. The guy made about 50 years worth of music and its all good.
