Dire Straits came along when I was in my late 20's and I got to see them in Cleveland on their first American tour in 1979. I saw them four or five times in the 80's & 90's. They broke up a while ago, but Mark Knopfler still records and tours. I saw him last in 2006 when he toured with Emmylou Harris on the All The Roadrunning tour in Washington, DC. Great album and great concert. Knopfler is a great songwriter and musician.

They did this at Live Aid, and were followed by Queen. I recorded it at the time and still have it on VHS somewhere. In the movie "Bohemian Rhapsody", before Queen goes on stage, and Freddy is addressing the other members of Queen in the backstage area, you can hear Dire Straits, apparently onstage, playing this, in the background. It blew my mind that they included this detail. I got up in the middle of the night to record the original as it went to air by satellite across the whole world (me in Melbourne Australia), and my parents thought I was mad. I recorded the Queen bits afterwards because I always like them, but my sister loved them. She liked Dire Straits too, and we were both there at that gig in 1986. It was her 20th Birthday, so I guess I was 17. They did a run of shows that was never beaten globally until 1988, when Pink Floyd beat it, same town, I and I was at the opener of that one as well. The record stood until P!nk beat it a few years back (same Town! We like who we like!) but I wasn't at that. Ex-wife was though.

@@strato9223 Dire Straits were a British rock band formed in London in 1977 by Mark Knopfler (lead vocals and lead guitar), David Knopfler (rhythm guitar and backing vocals), John Illsley (bass guitar and backing vocals) and Pick Withers (drums and percussion). They were active from 1977 to 1988 and again from 1990 to 1995. London is the Capital of England and England is a part of Great Britain, so YES YES YES, DS are a brilliant British band. It's a close race though. They were on fire for this run of concerts. I saw them in '86 here in Melbourne and they smashed both songs. And all the others. He also sings as good as ever. Which is...terrible. But it's his voice. You sing them with a more trained sounding voice, and they don't work. Imagine Bob Dylan's voice sung beautifully and you have Peter Paul and Mary doing Mr.Tambourine Man. It's a different song. You also might get why Dylan got Knopfler to produce a lot of his albums back in the '80s

I saw their Love Over Gold tour concert in Sydney. Musically speaking, nothing I've experienced before or since has drawn a remote parallel.

This live version is more up-tempo from the studio version that is relatively laid back. Mark Knopfler is one of the great composers and guitar players. Edit: John Isley is on bass but not sure if that is Pick Whithers on drums.
