Drummers rarely stand out in songs because the drums are usually just there to keep time, but this is one of the greatest drumming performances of all time. Even more impressive is that it stood out in spite of having no solos.

Also in Telegraph Road Terry is superb, just like the keyboardplayer. But you don't hear that on the studio versions. (Very often another drummer does the studioversions, a common thing with lots of bands) That's why I think Dire Straits is live always better. Now I am waiting for "my troll to react with: Their studioversions are always better" 😉
@ksoman953
@ksoman953 Жыл бұрын
@@larairina3922 It's not about better or worse. The original (recorded 4ish years earlier) had drummer Pick Withers who had a different style than Terry who was more suitable for stadium sized concerts. Pick was not a session player, he was part of DS and did both studio and live till he quit the band and Terry stepped in. If you ever listen to the isolated drums played by either on this song, you'd know why both had their own place and time on this song. Same song, two different moods. No question both were remarkable in their own ways.

We mustn't forget that Mr Knopfler wrote the words and music, arranged and produced, sang and played his guitar as only he can. Not many can do that. A masterpiece performed by a genius, no other word for him. Long may he reign...

@@alankicks788 He does so many different genres, all of them so well…rock, blues, folk, country, zydeco, Celtic, Spanish, his music knows no limits. No other rock musician is as versatile. His music has evolved so much over the years, like a fine wine, it keeps maturing with age. He is the best at collaboration, and seems to bring out the best in people. I believe the albums he did with Dylan are some of Dylan’s best. He is one of a kind. We’ll never see another one like him.

Ever seen that movie "Soul"? It deals a lot with how creative people get into that zone of "flow", where everything's clicking and you're just dancing with the muse. That grin, to me, is what it looks like when masters are flowing together and making a total bigger than the sum of its parts. I'm right there on the welling-up thing. I've seen this so many times, and it never fails to bring a tear to my eye. It's just so gloriously human, in the best possible sense of the word, and God knows we don't get to trot-out the positive meanings of that term very often.

I have never heard anyone play guitar remotely like him. He is a perfectionist, a master guitarist, poet, lyricist, songwriter, and band leader. I have never heard anyone with a guitar tone like that. His solo stuff is so moving, so calming and healing. His songs are like little history lessons, just incredible. I got my first Dire Straits album when I was 8 years old. Now I am 49 and my emotions still kick in the same way like back in the days. I heard every song of them thousands of times and will not get tired to listen to them another thousand times. This Alchemy version of "Sultans of swing" is the best they ever played in my opinion. So is "Tunnel of love" which I highly recommend listening to.

I saw the concert live, I was there & being there was an amazing experience. I am a musician who has seen many, many concerts of major artists, & nobody, even Dire Sttraits themselves, could not beat this performance. The absolute off the charts standout were Sultan, Telegraph Rd & Tunnel of Love, please don't ask me to choose a favourite, I would never commit such heresy. At the time of the concert I was studying serious music at the state university. One lecturer commented, music has to be about more than one band, one or one performance, I retorted, Who said it can't? Okay Greenie you got me.

Telegraph Road from Alchemy is even better in my opinion. It builds and builds and the last few minutes are mindblowing. The guitar playing is perfect (goosebump alarm).

Absolutely brilliant reaction mate well done!! I had the same reaction as you when I first saw this live vid, having known the recorded version my whole life as you said you knew it before hand too. I choose this version over the original now and must watch this at least once a week. Epic reaction.

Yep, Dire Straits remains my top band of all times! This album (Sultan of Swing) and Making Movies… Mark Knopfler on the guitar is an artist you really want younger people to discover.

Thanks for this video - I’ve listened to this ever since buying the album in 1984 (and since bought it on CD, DVD, Blu-ray and iTunes…) and every time my reaction is the same energised bolt of happiness, joy and enthusiasm coupled with appreciation and admiration. It’s fantastic and it never ever gets old. Dire Straits are fantastic. Go on a KZbin crawl and find live recording from all the way back in 1978 up til the end in the early 90’s, it’s all brilliant. Oh and do check out that Knebworth performance mentioned in the video, absolutely brilliant and has Eric Clapton on backing guitar…

This is music from my generation. Now you know why our bands are around 40 and 50 years later. Because they made the best music ever. I guess you can see how many bands are still around from today in 40 or 50 years. My guess is a few. The lead guitarist😊 and singer in this video does not use a pick. He plays with his fingers. How many guitarists do you know that can do that? Great show loved your reaction😊

While I basically lived in the Hammersmith Odeon in my late teens, I saw Dire Straits at the Empire Pool, Wembley when Eric Clapton stood in for David Knopfler on rythmn guitar. They played some Clapton songs when he took the lead. This was pre the Mandela Concert that was at Wembley Stadium when Clapton also played with the band.

This was the song that "made" the first incarnation of Dire Straits and got them their first sell-titled album in 1978. After some creative differences in the early 80's led to personnel changes, the band developed their style of longer songs with more complex arrangements. This concert was in 1983 and this version of "Sultans of Swing" makes me unable to listen to the studio version anymore, the difference in the drumming in particular.
