Have you heard Dolly's original I Will Always Love You ? And did you know that Elvis Presley wanted it but back in the day Elvis Presley was getting 50% of any song He covered regardless of who wrote it and did it first? Dolly's Daddy might have been illiterate, but he knew business, and he taught her his business sense. She kept it and she let Whitney borrow it, but she kept control of it, and the movie grossed her a heck of a lot for that song. Here are some more songs to check out, some really old and some kind of new and kind of Pop: *The Bargain Store* sweet gentle sad hopeful with a haunting melody Why'd You Come in Here Lookin" Like That Apple Jack Mule Skinner Blues Dumb Blonde Two Doors Down Islands in the Stream Here You Aome Again Old Flames Can't Hold A candle To Yo Touch Your Woman Baby, I'm Burnin' Joshua

Joseph was sold into slavery, but he also ended up as a very wealthy man and the Pharaoh’s right hand man. As Dolly said at the beginning of the video, this song is a true story from her life. She came from a level of poverty that few people today could begin to comprehend.

I think you should look up the rest of Joseph’s story. He was sold as a slave but he was able to read peoples dreams and see things that were going to potentially happen in the future. He gained the pharaohs trust and became a wealthy man.

I was gonna say the same thing but the real story of Joseph is that he was a type and shadow of Christ. He is the object of his father’s special love, he had promises of divine exaltation, mocked by his family, sold for pieces of silver, delivered up to the Gentiles, falsely accused, his power was acknowledged by those in authority, he saves his rebellious brothers from death when they realize who he is, he is exalted after and through humiliation, he embraces God’s purpose even though it brings him intense physical harm, he is the instrument God uses at the hands of the Gentiles to bless his people, he welcomes Gentiles to be part of his family. He gives hungry people bread. People must bow their knee before him. Sorry, probably a reply that is more than you bargained for but it’s truly amazing how we can find these types and shadows of Christ in the Old Testament and there are so many more. 😊

....it was because young Joseph had dreams that they would bow down to him that they hated him. His brothers thought once he was powerful and rich that he would retaliate, but he forgave them, saved them from famine, and was happy to see them. The end of the story is the best part and you left it out 🙂

Years ago when I was stationed at Willow Grove, a crew chief said to me, "There's the richest man in AFRC." That's Air Force Reserve Command. I said, oh hell no. You outrank me! You make more than I do. He said, "Jonsey, I'm not talking about money. You are always smiling. That happiness you have is what makes you richer than all the rest of us." An amazing wife, a great son, and faith in God put that smile on my face.

If you follow the story to completion, Joseph was able to save his entire family from famine, from what his brothers did. He considered what they did a blessing. It taught him to be humbled and how to forgive. It taught him a haughty nature is man's downfall. So to Joseph it was lucky, from his point of view.

@@Miss_Camel I favorably second that! Yes, he suffered, but he and his entire family ultimately gained from it all. One might wonder as to The Love of God, of how great Dolly's Mother's heart and wisdom was in her thinking of Joseph while she worked in piecing together scraps in fashioning them into a coat. I just want to draw out some parallels of two individuals, of two stories, and of two "Coats of Many Colors" and lastly of the two outcomes of both. We could easily say, with her Mother's great love and the need of warmth in covering her Daughter from winter's coming cold, now consider how she shared this story of Joseph and of his coat while she hand sewed it together! How little Dolly was happy in knowing Momma's making her this coat and in her finally getting to wear it. Those school children were much like the many jealous brothers. They weren't necessarily jealous of her coat, but they tried hard in their taking from her! They wanted to strip her of her joy and by making her feel bad about her life!!! My Mother was from Tennessee, too, only from another part of the state. Dolly would've had older siblings of my Mom's age. Later my Mom became friends with a girl who was from there and she went to school with Dolly. This is how I'm knowing of their age differences. In those decades and going more back in time, the vast majority of the population there, state-wide struggled. Nearly everyone was poor, including my kinfolks! Now think as to how many hold on to dreams of going to Nashville and making it big! Dolly was one of millions to make it! If she never had more success, than her "Porter Wagoner" years, she made it! I know of two other families from Dolly's neck of the woods! Some do leave, a huge amount stay with having generations in the Smokies and Knoxville surrounding areas! So think of all the decades of Dolly's successfulness in her career. I doubt, if anyone can hold a candle to Dolly's notoriety of the area, with only the high regards to only one. That being Sergeant York! Please know, I am not making out Dolly to being a biblical person here! I will say, the life events of these two, that there's much in comparison of their disregard, of their climb to achieving lasting success and of how they brought about the greatest of change in the lives of their families, plus in the lifes of a good many, many others!!! How vastly different do you, can you imagine the nieces and nephews of Joseph's life's were altered? He saved his family from famine, his people from starvation!!! I feel that he would have shared greatly his riches with all of his extended family. Dolly has helped her family, has funded the area after disasters there, she started things up in her area, helped in reading books, education, and funding much! Just go and read for yourself. I can easily say with assurance, many of those un-named children who was making fun of her and her coat in this song, those same ones, that their Grandchildren and many other of their relatives, perhaps they themselves have all, all those still living in that area have reaped from the depths of Dolly's pockets, 💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵 💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵 and from her heart strings! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

@@ginnywithag5046 love your comment. Awesome. How about the parallels between Joseph and Jesus? Joseph is a type and shadow of Christ, one of many we can find in the Old Testament that point to the coming Messiah. Their stories are so similar. He is the object of his father’s special love. He had promises of divine exaltation. He was mocked by his family. He was sold for pieces of silver. He was stripped of his robe. He was delivered up to the Gentiles. He was falsely accused. He was faithful amid temptation. He was thrown into prison. He stood before rulers. His power was acknowledged by those in authority. He saves his rebellious brothers from death when they realize who he is. He is exalted after and through humiliation. He embraces God’s purpose even though it brings him intense physical harm. He is the instrument God uses at the hands of the Gentiles to bless his people. He welcomes Gentiles to be part of his family. He gives hungry people bread. People must bow their knee before him.

Dolly came from the hills, way back! Where they washed their clothes on rocks. It wasn't just meeting bills. They had outhouse, the whole 9 yrs! I remember her talking about a bunch of her, and all her brothers & sisters had to wash up out of the same wash bowl of water. Like she said, patches on her britches (southern for pants) and holes in both her shoes. They all worked very hard, to make their clothes & grow their food. The dad worked but it couldn't take care of them. What we consider poverty, would have been rich to them!! I ❤️ Dolly!! Me and Little Andy is another great one!!

Dolly came from what we would call abject poverty in Appalachia. There was nothing her mother had to clothe her in but the rags- but the domestic artist her mother was, she was able to make her a coat with great love. People still live like this in Appalachia, they make do, grow food, can, sew, and make a life with what they have.

Just so there's no misunderstanding, the coat at Dollywood is not the original. Neither Dolly nor her mother knew for certain what happened to that. They assumed it was passed down, till it wore out or was taken apart & repurposed. After the success of the song, Dolly's mother made a "near duplicate", from her memory & the school pic Dolly had taken in it (which only showed the front, upper area of the coat). The duplicate is the one in the museum at Dollywood, along with a fancier version from the movie.

Dude, sir, I have tears. 😂 Anyway, this song is amazing, like many of Dolly's. I'm Appalachian, but I was born in Indianapolis. My grandparents raised me. They were from Hazarrd/Bonnyman Kentucky. My Granny and Papa were amazing. They're gone. My Papa died 5/3/22. He was a coalminer in Perry and Johnson County KY. I've always loved this song because it was my grandmother and mother's reality... They both did things like this for me. Papa worked the mines until he moved everyone to Indy... And I'm so very proud of the place I come from, but I see the opportunity he handed us by working those mines and getting us out of the holler. 😭 So many aren't proud... Appalachians are strong, resilient, creative... We can be anything, but we will be joyous.

Watching from a Beauville van in Sevierville. I wasn't born here but I absolutely love Dolly, she's deeply loved here more than anywhere else and it's beautiful to see people all around get to know her through her music. There's no shortage of music legends here but none of them remind me of this place more than Dolly, I'd feel absolutely homesick wherever I'm at in the world listening to her. That's why it's important to listen to the music of the places you travel to, there's music legends all around the world and few things are as great of an ice breaker when meeting locals. You get such a beautiful look into their culture and than associate the music with their home. It's like a musical postcard. If there's not musical postcards yet, I either have a genius idea or a terrible one.

That is the point her mum made, hoping that for her, the coast of many colours will bring luck instead of trouble as did for Joseph. Well that's how I understand it. This song is close to my heart, thanks for your reactions. BTW, Joseph wasn't boasting front of his brothers, he simply related his dream, that intrigued him. He had love for his brothers, being the youngest, didn't think that by telling them will evoke jealousy in them. As we know the dream came through according to the story. Isn't she a great story teller? Greetings from Australia.

“Britches” is an old southern word for pants. And, yes, the song references Joseph and the coat of many colours. Not sure why, for the reasons you said. I also love Dolly Parton. It’s a great song too, the message she makes with it.

It's funny to me that most people I have read in the comments took the story of Joseph and his coat of many colors that you told so well and continued it to the end whereas I was thinking even your version might be more complex than you might tell a child. Her Mother may just have said there is a story in the Bible when Joseph is given a coat of many colors by his Father just like this one I am giving you. I really like this song, I heard it myself for the first time within the last year or two; glad you enjoyed it, and I enjoyed your reaction.

There is a replica of the coat on display at Dollywood (Dolly's theme park in Tennessee). It was apparently made by Dolly's mother for the display as the original no longer existed as it had been reused for other purposes.

Probably inspired by this song, my great aunt made me a coat similar. We were all huge fans of Dolly back then and that has never changed. I adore Dolly. (I was raised by my great aunt; and she always sewed my clothes back in the 60's and we enjoyed the Porter Wagoner Show on our black n white tv.)

I've always loved this song, because I can relate to it. My family wasn't rich, we often pinched pennies, but we never went to bed hungry, and we always got what we needed to get by, and if needed we'd improvise something to work. We've always been quite resourceful that way, and it made us appreciate what we have and never take it for granted. On top of that, I have a cat that is a long hair calico (black, white, and orange). I named her Dolly because of this song. She's my "Coat of Many Colors" that her momma made for me. She's incredibly smart, as I'll tell her to look after my mother and my toddler nephews, and she'd do it! In fact, when the nephews are fussing, she'll pat my mom on the shoulder when my mom is asleep just to wake her so she can tend to the boys.

When I listen to this ( and I do often ) I remember my childhood. We were somewhat poor, I found out after I became an adult, and we got one new pair of shoes before school started. Daddy took each of the six of us, two at a time and when we tried them on he pressed the toe space to make sure there was growing room. You were in trouble if they didn't last long enough. Memories and precious times

Had to take off the nice school clothes and shoes as soon as you get home. Playing outside with whatever worn out clothes you could still, mostly, fit into, no socks or shoes, so those shoes would last longer. Up here in the north we each got a new snow sled every year for Christmas, because we used last year's to haul the wood into the house. Being the youngest I rarely got new shoes, I got my older brother's old ones instead.

Josef had to learn a lot of things, but in the end the coat brought him, his brothers, the pharao and the whole country of egypt luck and happiness. In fact the story of Josef, which began with the coat led to the rescue from starvation of an entire nation and to himself being the right hand of the pharao. In the end Josef forgave his brothers and they lay crying in each other's arms. You should read the story again and think about it.

BEECHES or as we in the south, BRITCHES: When speaking informally, breeches is a term that may refer to any trousers. Breeches is a plural noun, the preferred pronunciation is BRIchiz. The word breeches appears around 1200, it comes from the Old English word brec, the plural of broc, meaning a garment for the legs and trunk.

Dolly’s original coat is long gone. Neither she nor her mother knew for certain what happened to it. They assumed it was passed down, till it wore out or was taken apart & repurposed. After the success of the song, Dolly's mother made a "near duplicate", from her memory & the school pic Dolly had taken in it (which only showed the front, upper area of the coat). The duplicate is the one on display in the museum at Dollywood, along with a fancier version from the movie.

I am so glad you’re doing this song and how you’re talking about Joseph’s coat but I think you forgot that the reason Joseph’s father gave him the coat is because he was the favorite and most cherished son. Then, as the story goes, there were hardships like slavery to the Egyptian pharaoh but also a use for Joseph’s talents that in the end was a blessing for his brothers, father and Israelites as a whole. Thanks for listening to the song.

I think the parallel with the story of Joseph was because his "coat of many colors" was very valuable - that's why his brothers were envious. So she was saying that the coat made from rags was like Joseph's special coat because they were both multi-colored.

II was the coat that made Joseph's brothers so jealous that they wanted to get rid of him causing them to sell him into slavery and it was being sold into slavery that brought him to the attention of the Pharoah which ended with him having lots of "good luck and happiness" so indirectly the coat did bring him "good luck and happiness" even though his brothers' intentions for him were quite different. If not for the coat, he probably would have lived out an obscure and unremarkable life on his father's land helping to tend the sheep. Maybe I'm strange but I think the coat was the catalyst for getting him out of there!
