Dolly wrote this song for Porter Wagoner. She was the female singer on his weekly show in the 1960’s. When she told Porter she was leaving his show Porter was so mad at her. He told her you are killing your career by leaving. She stormed out after a screaming match between the two. She came back the next day and told Porter “ you sit your ass down and just listen” . After she sang this song to him he told Dolly “ I will let you go BUT, I have to be the producer on that song.

It has been said that Whitney sang her version to the world, but Dolly sings to you. Both great, but very different.

Dolly wrote this as a personal love letter to her boss, because she was leaving his TV show & she wantted to go solo. Whitney did it years later for her movie 'The Bodyguard', where her character was a Diva & her version is a Diva performance. Both are beautiful in their own right. Dolly jokes that Whitney made her rich. LOL

Dolly is a prolific songwriter. See the earlier comment about her inspiration for this one over 50 years ago. To date she estimates she has written over 6,000 songs.

Yes, this is Dolly's song and she said when she asked Whitney to sing it that it was the best thing she ever did bc not only did Whitney do the song justice and sung it amazingly beatiful like she figure she would but she made Alot more money of the song and she's still making money from it to this day.

Dolly has written over 5,000 songs in her career this is her most famous. When she heard Whitney Houston singing it on the radio she had to pull over because she couldn't believe how beautiful it was being done. She made millions of dollars off of Whitney's version.

When ask what she thought about the way Whitney sings her song, she said..."She sings it perfectly and sends me lots of money every time she does!" BTW...Dolly has from the 1st penny given it all to the black Memphis communities...

Love both versions of this song. And Whitney can truly belt out a song but Dolly makes you feel it heart and soul.

Dolly wrote and sang a sweet love song and Whitney did a big movie theme version. You have to be dramatic to do a movie theme song when the movie is about the dramatic life of a singer. Dolly's voice is amazing, there is no enhancement here at all. This is exactly how she would have sounded singing in your den.
