She has written 950 songs that have been published. She talked about Whitney and thought she could do the song better than her, and Whitney and her got along beautifully. She wrote this to her employer- Porter Waggoner- on whose show she wanted out of to pursue her solo career. Theres another video where she explains it all before she sings the song. 😊 Her “ Coat of Many Colors” is amazing- she came out of poverty in the Appalachians. Her dad was a sharecropper and they lived in a one bedroom shack- a family of 14.

Elvis wanted to record this song. Dolly was invited to the recording session. The day before Elvis was to record his version, Colonel Tom Parker (Elvis’ manager) called up and wanted all or half the publishing rights. Dolly already had a number one hit with the song, and she simply told him NO. Dolly is an amazing businesswoman. She knew her worth, and she wasn’t afraid to say no, even to the Elvis empire.

Dolly's version is a personal love letter to her boss, as she parted ways to go solo. Whitney was playing a Diva in the Bodyguard & they are totally different, while both being beautiful. She also sings it in a fun old western movie with Burt Reynolds called 'The Best little Whorehouse in Texas'. Guess who played the madam? Such a fun movie. Dolly is now 77 & she just did the halftime show on Thanksgiving at the Dallas cowboys game... and she was in a cowboys cheerleader uniform, I might add. She just released a new album in November called Rockstar & she does several rock tunes. She has featured stars on different songs too, like Lizzo & Pink, Elton John & Paul McCartney from the Beatle. It's awesome too. Having little education herself, Dolly has donated millions for charity & also has a book program where she has given away millions & millions of books to children. She is a treasure.

Dolly is a prolific song writer and wrote many hits songs for others. She has the voice to do this Whitney’s way but she loved Whitney doing it. She wrote a song for Elvis Presley and he loved it but it was never recorded. The Colonel told Dolly she had to pay him half of her song writing rights or he wouldn’t let Elvis sing. He was a pig and a liar. He wasn’t a Colonel, his name wasn’t Tom Parker and he was an illegal immigrant. Dolly is not a pushover and she told him she was sad that Elvis wouldn’t be singing her song. Dolly came up hard with nothing and a lot of siblings in a shack in the mountains. She often didn’t have shoes in Winter. Many of her first hits were based on her early life and they are worth hearing. Like Coat of Many Colours or Apple Jack. Dolly really has a heart of gold. She runs Dolly World so she can send books to children who do not have any all over the world. She knew what it was like to not have a book. A couple of years ago her count was over 3 million books sent to children in need. She couldn’t have children so she helped raise many of her siblings children. Dolly is a giver and if you look you will find so many ways she gives her money away. So it was never the money with the Colonel, it was the principle. Thank you.

I find it kinda sad that Elvis didn't get to record it. Both him and Dolly wanted him to do it, but the Colonel wouldn't let him unless Elvis was given the copyright. I think his version could have been really beautiful. Fun fact: this song was played at the end of the movie Priscilla, not only because it fit with the ending but because Priscilla has said that Elvis sang it to her at the courthouse after their divorce

While my initial reaction to Elvis singing it was "Wow, that would have been awesome!" I just watched a concert of his from about this time and, . . . his lifestyle was already taking a toll on his voice. If he had this song in the 60's it would have been the GOAT, In the 70's, . . . it might have been just a good cover, maybe.

@@boltoniangirl Then Elvis should have had the balls to stand up to Col. Parker. It seems that Elvis forgot who the f-ing BOSS is. What a wimp. Elvis wasn’t the sharpest knife in the drawer. In fact, he was a pretty stupid man. He should have been a billionaire by the time he died. Instead he allowed Col. Parker to steal millions and millions of dollars from him. He was only worth about 4-5 million when he died. That’s ridiculous.

He has just closed down her house. He wants to go into politics and she is telling him that it won’t work between them Her performance brought me to tears. Maybe it was the fact that a the song had a context. The movie is a great musical comedy and well worth the watch. It is funny as hell.
