Check out Donny Osmond's 1988 comeback hit called "Soldier of Love" when he was 30 years old, after spending a whole decade away from the music business. It reached No. 2 on the U.S. pop singles chart. Since the Osmonds had a squeaky-clean image from the 1970s, at first the radio deejay just teased that the record was from "a mystery artist." It wasn't until the song started climbing the charts that it was revealed that the mystery singer was none other than Donny. 🙂

Donny was working with Peter Gabriel then IIRC. This was during the time when anything Donny touched turned to crap and it had been that way for a long time. Michael Jackson told him the name Donny Osmond was poison and to change it. Some publicist like characters wanted him to get caught with drugs for some street cred and shock publicity. Donny went by Don Osmond and grew a beard which might have been a way of hiding (or he just wanted a beard). If anyone in music history was saved by a song it was Donny Osmond and "Soldier of Love". They should play that on this channel.

Donny was purple before Prince. :) He did over 2000 performances (as an adult) as Joseph in the musical Joseph and His Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. You can view the televised version of it via KZbin. And later this year he's going to play Pharoah in a revival of it. His autobiography details how during that production he suffered debilitated stage fright (of not being perfect for the audience) and that he'd had it most of his life even though he'd performed publicly since age 5.

I opened up the closet to hang up my clothes and I was eyeball to eyeball with a life-size poster of all 6 Osmond Brothers and their multitudinous rows of teeth! So. Paul Anka WROTE Puppy Love for his teen love, Annette Funicello, who was a young actress on the original Mickey Mouse Club series in the 1950s. Donny recorded it in the 70s and it was probably THE song that made him such a heartthrob to all of the teeny-bopper girls (much to his dismay, probably!) I’ve always heard that the purple socks thing was a good luck charm for him. But it may have been mostly a gimmick. When the Osmonds were young they appeared often in these beaded white suits (think Elvis, at the time) and each boy had a different color beads on his suit. Donny’s suit had purple beads. So of course there were matching purple socks, and they kind of stuck, even after the white suits were long gone.I’ve never met Donny in person but if I ever did, it would be something I’d ask him, whether the purple socks thing was real, or just something he did for show. And ok, now that you’ve seen this, check out the Weird Al Yankovic parody, “White and Nerdy,” which features Donny doing an iconic white and nerdy dance. I’ve always appreciated that Donny can at least have fun making fun of himself.

Jimmy went on to work behind the scenes as a manager. And to this day, he is still remembered for his brief moment in the pop spotlight. How about a song of love for some grown folks? HANG ON IN THERE, BABY is just such a tune. Keep going and enjoy

Jimmy also made an appearance in the tv show Kids from Fame singing Penny Lane. ❤

Fun fact . Donny is the singing voice of Mulan love Interest. In the first movie. When he sings make a man out of you.

Now you need to hear newer Donny. “Soldier of Love” is a great start. And a Donny and Marie duet. Of course I would love to see you hear more from the Osmond Brothers as well. You need to look at their signature album “The Plan”. Such a significant piece of writing!

Donnie Osmond was the bane of my youth. He vexed me. He had great hair and he wore cool pleated bell-bottom pants. Girls swooned when they heard his voice. I had none of that stuff. He’s cool now, though. He got around to his own Life‘s Disappointments. I’d share a dinner table with him for the conversation.

I cannot imagine how many times my 11-12 year old self listened to this song! I had Donnie posters all over my bedroom! He was truly my first love!

Fast forward to the late 1980s and a grown up (and pretty fine 😁) Donny Osmond singing "Soldier of Love". That song was so catchy. I still love it! I listened to it back to back with a song by R&B group LeVert called " Casanova ". A LOT. Drove my sister crazy. She hated sharing a room with me. 😄 But they do sound great together.

You still need to hit the youngest Osmond... Jimmy! His recording of "Long Haired Lover from Liverpool" in 1972 resulted in The Guinness Book of World Records designating him, the youngest performer, to have a #1 single on the UK Singles Chart.

The Osmonds and The Jackson 5 had careers that mirrored each other. They both gained national recognition in the 60's. Also they both were family groups lead by the youngest member as lead singer!!

Donny Osmond and David Cassidy 😍 my first crush in the early 1970s when I was 12/13 years young. Oh dear, my parents had to listen to both of them (and the Osmond, and the Partridge Family, and the Jackson's Five) for hours. My mom bought me a small used red record player that I could listen to them in my room because they were tired of listening to my music on their stereo system. 😁

Although Paul Anka sung it originally most everyone remember instead the unforgettable Donny Osmond version in 1972. It climbed as high as Number 3 on the US Billboard Pop 100 charts. In his lifetime, he's sold more than 100 million records and received 33 gold records throughout his 60+ years in the music industry. Not bad for a Mormon kid with perfect teeth and a squeaky clean reputation. Not bad at all.

I grew up swooning over Donny Osmond! I loved Puppy Love and all of his other songs with and without his family. Funny story, when he was in his twenties and thirties he hated being asked to sing this song at his concerts, and so he would make fun of it during the show. He states that one time a lady came up to him after the show really upset. She told him that he had no right to mess with her childhood and make fun of something that brought her so much joy at the time! He shouldn't make fun of Puppy Love because he touched so many young hearts with that song! He said it really made him step back and take a different perspective on the song. To this day, he still sings Puppy Love in his shows now with a different attitude, one of gratitude and love for his many fans that have stuck with him through the years.

Donny's favorite color is purple. His trademark was wearing purple socks, as your mom "hinted" to you. If it wasn't socks, Donny would try to include something purple in his wardrobe. His female fans often loved mailing Donny ANYTHING purple!

Donny Osmond is so good. Loved him in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. He has an amazing voice and talent just oozes from his pores. I also loved him in the Weird Al video, White and Nerdy. Too funny.

Donny was in a class all to himself when it came to being a heartthrob. Millions of girls, including myself, had a major crush on him. This song was a big reason for that. Despite a lot of setbacks, the man has had an amazing musical career. He's had to reinvent himself a number of times to be taken seriously. Other songs you should check out include: Sweet and Innocent (try to listen to the original before Donny's voice change!), Go Away Little Girl, Too Young, The Twelfth of Never - all from his early years. But what you really need to also check out are some of the songs he sang when he was playing Joseph in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in the Toronto Production. Any Dream Will Do and Close the Door are two of the best songs that showcase what Donny can do with is voice. Both are very difficult songs to pull off and he did it flawlessly for about 2000 live shows and in the movie version. But watch the version of the videos of Donny singing in the movie version. It was stellar. You should maybe check out the film version on your movie reaction channel. If you're familiar with Mulan, Donny did the voice that sang, I'll Make a Man Out of You. So many songs to choose from his many albums. Almost every album produced a song worth listening to. But I would agree with others that you need to check out the single, Soldier of Love, which has a very interesting backstory because it was a hit in the UK first. it was played on the radio and became popular in the US without listeners knowing who the artist was and they couldn't buy the record because he didn't have a contract with a American music label at the time. After it was released on an American label, it reach #2 on the Billboard top 100 the following year. Donny came out with a great album called Start Again a few of years ago that had some really great songs on them. My two favorite songs from that album are Life After Loneliness and Who. Beacon Girl is also a great song from the same album. Other songs to check out: Sacred Emotion Breeze On By My Love is a Fire

Amber, your reactions are so adorable to watch because they are EXACTLY how we responded back when we heard and/or saw him sing it when it came out! This is THE song everyone equates with Donny. You folks HAVE to go to Vegas and see his family-friendly show--or on his summer tour if he's nearby. You will love it!
