In 2021 a whole bunch of girl groups started doing scary/occult concepts with heavier music and more powerful choreo, traveling the new road that Dreamcatcher paved for them in recent years. I was very happy to see the Originals come back and show everyone how horror rock done. The red hair is Gahyeon (also pink hair from Boca), keep an eye on her she was a wee teenager when they started but with 5 years of growth now she's a maknae on the rise. Disco Pang Pang is Handong's personal nightmare I love they put her on that in the abandoned park that really brought the terror out of her.

This song is based on Jordan Peel's horror movie "Us". Dreamcatcher went to watch it in 2019 and liked it so much, that they wanted to create a creepy horror song about it. What's so incredible about BEcause is the fact that it uses music, lyrics, cinematography, choreography and dance, to connect the pieces of a puzzle, and give meaning to what's going on. It's like a good horror mystery. Dreamcatcher have described this song as "a short cruel Summer tale". Of course, there are many more horror references for us to enjoy. The story is about the Doppelganger myth, the Evil Doubles, aka the Shadows. They look exactly like people, but they're evil and they steal everything from them and replace them. They say that you see your Doppelganger only when they're about to replace you. So in this Deathtrap Hotel, the Shadows await for their next victims. The clothes at the lobby belong to the previous ones, the one's they've replaced, and keep them trapped as their dolls. The dark figures at the abandoned carnival are the Originals, now destined to be the dolls for the Shadows. The name of the song tells us another clue. The BE in BEcause refers to the Chinese character 非, which means sadness. The reason they do it, is because of sadness. The lyrics describe acts of insanity, obsession and murder, hidden in sweet I love yous. They sound innocent, but this love the Shadows mention is actually their mad obsession. "Blue, blue. Your face is pale like the Ocean View" or "Everything, including your breath" are some of the lyrics. The MV has many references to "Us", like the mirror scene, or a young character, like Mother (the red haired Gahyeon). Here, in the end, Mother merges with the Shadow Queen in a cocoon, and rule the Shadows from the Underworld, together as One. A truly unique horror song.

Excellent comment, just a slight correction: sadness is 悲; (非 on top of 心). Just 非 means "not" or "wrong" (while 心 is "heart"). Though it's not very visible in the MV, if you take a look at the dance practice, you can see them show it in the choreography in three parts, on BE (非 with fingers above the head), CAUSE (the left and right dot in 心) and LOVE/LIKE (the rest of 心).

FYI again : They also said during their times in a variety show called Weekly Idol that this song is about a love-turns-into-obsessive and toxic(?) relationship. The word of "BE" in a form of capital words came from Hanja word that means "sadness", and so it represent with their hands gesture that symbolizing the word. It's funny because I'm not usually a fan of really rocky songs, but Dreamcatcher just have a special charm. Their songs are pretty epic. I really love their song Deja Vu; it's amazing. I have like 3 or 4 Deja Vu songs on Spotify, all different artists, all different vibes. Haha! Speaking of other artists, you should check out Ateez. I AM LITERALLY TYPING AND YOU JUST MENTIONED ATEEZ. Yeah, they're amazing. I don't even know which of their songs to recommend first because I love them all. 2:25 That's Gahyeon, their maknae (youngest member), and also lead rapper... And yes, you're making perfect sense. The video for BEcause has fairytale elements of Sleeping Beauty and Alice in Wonderland... but the _primary_ inspiration, was Jordan Peele's horror movie, "Us"... hence the abandoned fairground (which is _actually_ a disused fairground called Yongma Land, now exclusively rented out for videos and photoshoots), underground tunnels... and the doppelgangers. Meanwhile, the story of the song is more like Stephen King's "Misery"; the theme is very much "I love you too much to let you leave me... 😈" The title has a double meaning; the capitalised "BE" is a reference to the Chinese character "悲", which means "sadness", so it's kind of saying "my love for you is the cause of my sadness". SuA's line at the end of her rap also references it with "I don't wanna BE", so "I don't want to be sad". 4:10 That would be Dami. And as you even discover more about her personality, you're not gonna like her _less._ 😜 Granted, that's true of all of 'em; they're absolute sweethearts... and nutters. 5:40 It's alright, they often have that effect on us. 🥴 6:20 They're often referred to as "underrated", and there are certainly those of us who'd argue that _any_ amount of "rated" would be "under" where they're concerned. 😜For the longest time, they've had an expanding international fanbase, while their domestic appeal has been pretty low; rock generally doesn't have a great reputation in Korea. But for the last year or two especially, that Korean love has been going up too, and they're finally starting to be considered big hitters. AHHHHHH I DROPPED EVERYTHING TO COME WATCH THIS I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR WEEKS FOR THIS NOTIFICATION!!!!!!! I’m glad u loved this one as well!! Funny you’d speak of megaphone voice… they used megaphones in their live for the song “Break the wall”!!! Also this MV is inspired by the movie US ! Did you catch the 2 classic horror movie sounds in the song? Also the lyrics “Forever mine, everything, even your breath, forever mine” and then “turn the air blue and your expression like an ocean view” mmh very creepy in the lyrics as well hehe. I think their self-made MVs for their b-sides would make you happy, Sahara, Poison Love, Break the wall, any of them really, they’re so funny, the girls are acting out the lyrics and it’s a good way to capture their goofy personalities while also discovering some of their best songs! And as for normal MVs, Deja Vu is one of the fandom’s favorite, and personally i love Rose Blue, i think that one might make you emotional it’s quite sad!

WOW! I generally avoid getting into girl groups because I have a lot of concerns with how the industry and culture view women, but your reaction and watching this mv changed my mind about Dreamcatcher. Well, well, well. Hi there! Dreamcatcher are outdoing themselves here once again. Musically, the song is a fantastic journey. There actually are "cute" parts, but there also are parts where the guitars go full metal. The variations in BEcause remind me of their previous masterpiece, Deja Vu. The bridge with SuA's slow rap and Yoohyeon's adlibs is possibly the most beautiful one they have ever done. About the meaning: According to Dami, BEcause is about love becoming obsession. And also, this is a stand-alone story. They go back to their horror roots, which I really enjoy. They noted that if you look at "BE" as a written Chinese character "悲“, that would mean "sadness". So the song title would mean "The Cause of Sadness". And that would make the lyric "because I like you" to maybe mean "the cause of sadness is I like you". The video picks up on that. JiU seems to be the puppet master here (or her doppelganger!). She is the one trapping the other members and turning them into puppets, but Gahyeon tries to escape (as you can see by her throwing off the cage right in the beginning). It seems JiU catches her again though, "because she likes her". And I didn't even touch on the references to the movie "Us" yet, there is so much going on. The lyrics are even creepier. SuA sings: "Your face turns blue, blue. Your expression is like ocean view.", hinting at strangulation due to the one being obsessed taking things way, way too far. Dreamcatcher are clearly not afraid to tackle the difficult subjects, and they do it masterfully here - again. For me, this is more than just pop, it is art.

I mentioned this in one of your other DC reactions, but you should really check out Pixy - Bewitched. They are new group with a small company, and don't have much of a following, but every one that has watched them, has raved about them, and they are definitely following in DCs footsteps. I promise you won't regret looking at them, and they need the support. Regarding your journey into Kpop, most of these idols are crazy talented, it is nuts, so it's not surprising that they are blowing your mind. I started in 2013, and it has been a deep rabbit hole indeed. I can't believe how many groups I follow, and I'm in my 50s, this never happened at all when I was younger, with western pop music.
