@@thomastimlin1724 Goes back to the war, really. British people were shocked at how the US army treated black soldiers, there are numerous stories, like when Bamber Bridge was told one of its three pubs would have to be designated for "coloured" troops, all three put up signs saying "coloured only".

"Wishin' and Hopin'" is a 1963 song written by Hal David and Burt Bacharach. It was first recorded by Dionne Warwick for her debut studio album Presenting Dionne Warwick. The better known version is by Dusty Springfield. Dusty Springfield (April 16, 1939 - March 2, 1999) was an English singer. Her real name was Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien. Her musical career lasted from the late 1950s to the 1990s. She recorded over 200 songs during this time. She became one of the most successful female singers in Britain. She made soul music. Springfield died of breast cancer on March 3, 1999.

Dusty's rendition of *"The Windmills of Your Mind"* is simply outstanding. 'Wishin & Hopin' was earlier in her career, before she went to record the LP 'Dusty In Memphis'. *(In November 1968, during the Memphis sessions, Springfield suggested to Wexler (one of the heads of Atlantic Records) that he should sign the newly formed UK band Led Zeppelin.)* So there's THAT! Matter of fact, I'm gonna listen to *"The Windmills of Your Mind"* right after this post is done. It's THAT good!

This song is such an earworm that as recently as this century did I sing, to my darlin', a version that went: "All you've gotta do is s--- him and f--- him...and on and on." Thankfully met with a sense of humor. Still alive. Once in a mountain restaurant with my papa, a mini jukebox was at the edge of the table, and I played this song.

Nice! If one wanted to, one could interpret this as a sexist song, but it's really not. It's about being active, rather than passive. It encourages women to get up and do something and make it happen, rather than just waiting for it to happen. Let's face it: It really isn't that hard to win over a man. But you do have to put some effort in.

Speaking’s of Brits, have you heard of Lulu? She did a great song called “To Sir, With Love” from the great movie “Blackboard Jungle” starring Sidney Poitier, one of the best black actors of all time. Lulu was in the movie too, and sang the song to Sidney at the end (I think it was at the end? Someone correct me if I’m wrong). Also, Lulu was married to Bee Gee twin Maurice (Morris) Gibb for a short time. Note: The movie is “To Sir, With Love”, not “Blackboard Jungle”, though Sidney co-starred in that movie.

Quiet Please There's a Lady On Stage - by Dusty Springfield is AMAZING and will give you the alternative view that you're both speaking of. It's so spellbinding.

For female Friday, if you find the time, check out another outstanding British female recording artist Petula Clark who released many international smash hits during the 1960's. Her huge single "Don't Sleep in the Subway" from 1967 is worth a listen. 💋👠🎤🎵🎶🔉🎧

This is the song I sing to my dogs when they come into the kitchen when I’m cooking. Because they are wishing & hoping & thinking & dreaming & praying that I’ll drop something

There is a UK Female Singer you HAVE TO watch. Her name is Sydnie Christmas (Her real name). In her Audition she was Very Funny. Her song on BGT was Simon Cowell's most hated song, Tomorrow, from Annie. She blew the Judges away including Simon. Her second song was My Way except she sang it Her Way and was Amazing. Her final song was Over The Rainbow, you will never have heard it sang that way before.🧸🧸

In the late 60's when I was in grade school, we would hear this song in the car everytime we went shopping with our Mom for new school clothes. This and "Downtown" by Petulia Clark.

One of my favourite Dusty songs. The Merseybeats did an excellent version of this too. Reached No.13 in the UK in 1964. Dusty's version was a hit in the USA.

I absolutely loved the remake of this song for the movie My Best Friend’s Wedding with Julia Roberts. Annie Difranco sang and performed the song with 3 other ladies I think at the beginning of movie? The dance routine they did together was so cute.🥰 I bought the soundtrack because of this song in the dance routine if they did.

Along with Dionne Warwick, Dusty was one of the finest interpreters of the classic music by Burt Bacharach and Hal David.

Dusty was a true 60`s icon . For a 70`s British female singer you have`nt listened to check out Elkie Brooks, Pearl`s A Singer or Lilac Wine, Sunshine After The Rain, Fool If You Think It`s Over amongst others.

Dusty Springfield went through a LOT and I mean a *LOT* of hairspray. She later in life said, "I used so much hairspray that I feel personally responsible for global warming!” Ronnie Spector always said Dusty was one soulful woman and that she would always give her just a little extra blast of hairspray! Aquanet was her jam!!

Since you went all the way back to Vera Lynn in the 30s, how about something more recent (the early 50s) with the sultry and sexy sound of Peggy Lee. A very very aged video accompanies her version of "Baubles, Bangles, and Beads" You'll both love this, Amber for the words, and Jay for the smooth minimalist jazz backing. Man, what a beat! kzbin.info/www/bejne/pZWcpmavh9SdY5I
