Dusty Springfield had an amazing voice. She rose to fame in the 60s with hits like "I Only Want to Be With You", "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me", "Son of a Preacher Man" and "Wishin' and Hopin'". She wasn't as successful in the 1970s. In 1987 she shot back up the charts with her collaboration with Pet Shop Boys "What Have I Done to Deserve This" which revitalized her career. It's a song you should check out. Unfortunately she left us in 1999 at the age of just 59. RIP Dusty.

In March 1999, Dusty was scheduled to go to Buckingham Palace to receive an OBE (Order of the British Empire) for "services to popular music". Due to the recurrence of her breast cancer, officials of Queen Elizabeth II gave permission for the medal to be collected earlier, in January, and it was presented to Springfield in hospital with a small group of friends and relatives attending. She died on the day that she would otherwise have collected her award from the Palace.

Dusty is one of my favourite of the British lady singers, of the 1960's/1970's which includes Petula Clarke, Lulu. Sandy Shaw, Julie Rogers and Cilla Black. Bring back such special memories of my early primary school to early high school years. This is coming from a Caribbean fan😊

Dusty Springfield would pluck words out the air as she sung, watch a video of her performance. She was a stunning vocalist, but took it a step further in her delivery. She introduced Motow to Britain, and refused to play to segregated audiences in Apartheid South Africa. Speak her name for a blessing.

Dusty heard the original Italian at a Italian music festival and was reportedly moved to tears despite not understanding Italian. She asked a music producer to write an English language version. That producer and another friend wrote the verses in an hour before a night on the town and the chorus in the cab on the way there. Dusty recorded her vocals the next day but wasn't happy with the acoustics of the studio so she recorded it in a stairwell. She wasn't happy with her vocals until 47 takes!

You remember her softer voice, her sultry voice on Preacher man, this song shows the strength, purity of her voice when she belted a song out. She was known to be a perfectionist when recording, but it is worth it. I graduated high school in 1969 and almost wore out my Dusty album. She blew me away and I recognized her talent and dedication. I'm grateful she came to Memphis and recorded he famous MEMPHIS album and had more hits. British considered her as one of their best vocalist and that's a considerable tribute. Gone too soon, RIP dear Dusty. 💐💐🌸🌸🥀🥀

You just need to hear Dusty in the 80s when she was featured by Pet Shop Boys in What Have I Done to Deserve this? Neil Tennant, who was the lead singer for PSB had loved Dusty as a teen, and always wanted to record with her. By the 80s, she was totally down and out, no career, I think drug problems, and by putting her in a PSB song revived her career. Then the week when she was to be inducted in the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame in the late 90s, she died a few days prior to induction.

I've always loved Dusty Springfield, other songs by her to react to are: "I Only Want To Be With You", "Spooky", "Wishin' and Hopin'", "The Look of Love", "I Close My Eyes and Count To Ten", "If You Go Away", "Little By Little", "What's It Gonna Be", "In The Middle of Nowhere", "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself", "Goin' Back", "Just a Little Lovin'", "In Private", "What Have I Done To Deserve This" (this is with 'The Pet Shop Boys'), "Nothing Has Been Proved" (this is with 'The Pet Shop Boys'). There are plenty of other tracks but these are good ones to continue with.

I am a Rock/Metal/prog guy but being born in "58 I heard a lot of AM radio in the 60s. Here is a list of my favorite female vocal perfomances of the 60s: Dusty (You dont have to say...), Lulu (To Sir With Love), Ronnettes (Be my Baby), Supremes (Love Child, Aint no mountain high enough), Leslie Gore (You Dont Own Me), Shargra-Las (Leader of the Pack), Jefferson Airplane (White Rabbit), Mamas & Papas (California Dreaming).

I highly recommend "What do you get when you fall in love?" by Bobbie Gentry, who sang the bridge song you're thinking of. The other Dusty you did was "I only wanna be with you." "Green, Green" by the New Christy Minstrels, with Dusty, is rather famous, especially in Japan somehow, and a favourite of mine, too. Please do both of these. And "Eve of Destruction" if you haven't already. And "Living on the Ceiling" by Blancmange from the 80s while I'm at it.

It was so good they asked her to sing. I think they appreciated and wanted to help her rejuvenate her career. But her work earlier is still my favorite. WHAT a voice.

The "dramatic" sound was known known as "The Wall Of Sound"- by Phil Spector( Ronnie Spector's husband. Ronnie was the lead singer in the Ronettes and THE "Ronnie" from Eddie Money's "Take Me Home Tonight". You can see her do this live from a youtube black & white video. - with full orchestra on stage!!!!!🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 Thank you both!!!

I have a feeling Ivor Raymonde (with the Philip's in house orchestra) might just have beaten him to it. Not sure what the original of this one sounded like , I think it was a French singer and english words were adapted to the tune. (oh apparently Italian - there are some good Naples songs in the San Remo song contests early 1960s and similar ).

I suggest a 70s singer I’m not sure you’ve ever done and she had a lot of hits over a lot of years. Her name is Melissa Manchester and an early song of hers is “If it Feels Good Let it Ride” but her biggest hit would be either “Don’t Cry Out Loud” as an introspective or her most upbeat song “You Should Hear How She Talks About You.”

Don't forget "Midnight Blue" was a huge hit for her. Great story- Too many years ago, I was with a small group of friends that had tickets for her concert at Carnegie Hall on West 57th Street. We were on the lower east side of Manhattan and we were on the verge of missing the concert because we could not get a cab to stop for the 5 of us. Then something truly astounding happened. A city bus driver saw our frustration and asked where we were trying to go. She said she just went off duty and would take us there, which she did. A lot of people arrived in limos. We arrived on time in a $300,000+ ride. I will never forget her act of kindness. Fantastic concert, btw. Melissa was a "Harlette", a backup singer on Bette Midler's "Divine Miss M" album. Bette, Melissa, Carole Bayer Sager (Mrs. Burt Bacharach) and Barry Manilow all helped support and boost each other's early careers.

A couple of one-off collaborations to check out for female friday could be The KLF with Tammy Wynette on justified and ancient. Tammy doing house music with this British group. And then there's propellerheads with Shirley bassey doing History Repeating.

Dusty was the best British female singer of her generation. She was gifted with a voice that lasted her whole life. She could sing anything. Her promotion of black music in the UK was legendary. I do think the UK didn't always appreciate her. If your new to Dusty then go buy her Dusty in Memphis Album

Dusty is one of my all time favorite singers and this is my favorite of hers. The power and emotion in the vocals is superior. I've seen other talented singers sing it but they just didn't have the emotion in their voice to pull it off like Dusty. I won't limit Dusty to a list of best female singers from the 60s. To me she is one of the greatest singers of all time, period. As far songs from her you haven't checked out yet: "Give Me Time", "Little By Little" "Stay Awhile", "The Look of Love", "Wishin' and Hopin'", "Breakfast in Bed", "Have a Good Life Baby", "The Windmills of Your Mind", "I Can't Make it Alone", and "Just a Little Lovin'".

Richard Carpenter got Dusty Springfield to sing one of his songs "Something In Your Eyes" after Karen died. The song was released with Richard Carpenter as the artist. Dusty Springfield also sings on the Pet Shop Boys "What Have I Done To Deserve This" in the '80's. She has a very distinctive, beautiful voice.
