NO ONE put together a stage performance like this before Elvis. They stood still at the mic. Black or white. Jackie Wilson was one rare exception along with Elvis. They were very very close friends. Jackie had the dance skills but Elvis had that PLUS a whole lot more. There is NO Prince or Michael Jackson or Queen without Elvis Presley. Elvis caring SO MUCH about the drum beat and base ushered in all kinds of newer music in the 70s, such as Motown and rap. Sadly Elvis died long before his time but before he did amassed more record sales than anyone before him or after him, a record noone has been able to break to this day, not even MJ. Watch the MOVIE!!! VERY WELL DONE but BARELY scratches the surface. So good. Watch it on a big flatscreen if you can.. not on your phone. Choreographic brilliance.

A chain gang was a thing mainly in the past in which inmates were chained to one another while doing some physical labor outdoors like road construction work. Women prisoners would likely not have been part of a chain gang. So "Her momma was a workin' on a chain gang" is just part of the silliness of the song.

No it was not the lyrics to the song the note was from a fan you can see him take it out & show the fan it as he was singing Sweet Caroline during this same concert the women always tried to give him their rooms keys & telephone numbers while he was on stage! Love everything Elvis more Elvis you won’t regret going down the Elvis Rabbit hole he was & still is the GOAT his charisma alone was off the charts!

Love your reaction. And the movie came out in June of last year and it's available on streaming platforms and it's actually really good. It cannot remotely capture everything about him but it really was a pretty good attempt better than any we've seen so far and with high production value, and Priscilla Presley and his daughter anne-marie, rest in peace because she passed away unexpectedly recently, were all so in on it and approved of it.

That's totally awesome that you are picking up on how many levels that he performed on and acted in at once. And I think largely that was just him. He had always been that way. And of course he grew into the role but he also dealt with the crushing loneliness and isolation of being and Global celebrity by the time he was 21. He's in his early 30s here. But it is just so fun. And his band loved him and he loved his band and it's all just so good.

Hey, he had a number of iconic performances from this exact same show. Suspicious Minds is probably the biggest one, but his rendition of Bridge Over Troubled Water is just mind blowing and truly showcases his vocal range at that age. It got even better later by the way.

The lyrics such as “her mama was a working on a chain gang”, she was “a mean, vicious, straight-razor toting woman”and “her father was lazy and no account”, & “all her brothers were fit for was stealing watermelons” are to show what a horrible family Annie came from. She had to go out and pick food from the woods to cook. Sad to believe people who are not from the south, have never eaten polk salad, though.

This is very important history ... often left out of too many discussions about Elvis in today's black community (at least before the new movie) and sadly not the stuff that they teach in high school history books. The people THAT KNEW ELVIS PERSONALLY of course KNEW THE TRUTH about Elvis, and what made him SO DIFFERENT from other white musicians of the day, and different than white people in general. #1 Recommendation: Elvis and the Black Community. An amazing HISTORICAL interview with one of Elvis' first close friends, a black gentleman by the name of SAM BELL. Sadly Sam died soon after this interview. The beginning of the new ELVIS MOVIE came from this very interview about LIFE in one of the first mixed (predominantly black) communities in America. Black and white boys playing TOGETHER -- didn't happen down in the segregated South in the 1930s and 40s -- it was very dangerous to life and limb for kids or adults. His father built the home with a borrowed $150, then lost it because they couldn't afford to pay it back. How poor was Elvis? His twin brother Jesse Garon Presley was still born about 30 minutes before Elvis... and the Presleys were so poor that they couldn't afford a coffin, so Jesse had to be buried in a shoebox. Elvis was uniquely born at a time and place, Tupelo (SHAKERAG) AND Memphis (BEALE STREET) when so much new music and dance were happening. Elvis was TRAINED BY BLACK MUSICIANS in black churches (and white musicians in white churches) in the 1940s BEFORE most of the legends like Little Richard or James Brown or Chuck Berry rocked the world. Rev W Herbert Brewster of the East Trigg Baptist Church asked Elvis to join when he was 13, after Elvis and his family moved to Memphis. They were jamming before and during the legendary black musicians got heard. He was able to merge music genres and black and white culture better than anyone and created the sound and stage performance of Rock and Roll. AND as soon as ELVIS started to make that money -- THEY ALL STARTED TO MAKE MONEY! Revolutionary and rebellious icon. One of humans' finest.
