I think Enigma (Michael Cretu) got sued for using the Indian chants from another artist without giving credit. That was how Michael Cretu was revealed as the name behind the "Enigma" which he had intended to keep secret forever.

There are two editions of M.C.M.X.C.ad by the way :) The female vocals are by Sandra who is married to the guy behind Enigma. She is a massive star in her own right from Germany; has been since the 80s. I highly recommend her discography - Maria Magdalena, Johnny Wanna Live, In The Heat of The Night to name a few.

In the 60s my Catholic Church during High Mass, the choir (not Monks) sang the Gregorian Chants. The Mass, Chants and songs were in Latin. This song came much much later so it was a nice memory. Of course it wasn't exactly like this but I distinctly remember "Hosanna". Years later my teenage daughter and I enjoyed this album. Thanks for the memory.

One of my favorite albums, ever. It was so different, mixing the sacred and the profane (and the old and the new) in a totally new way, and it was sensual and downtempo. In this song, the Latin chants are sacred church songs, and the French text questioning Sade represents the profane. The Marquis (mar-kee) was a French political activist and nobleman, famous for his libertine novels, but was also imprisoned for sex crimes, blasphemy and pornography. In French, she repeatedly asks: "Sade, tell me; Sade, give me." The male voice asks: "Sade, tell, me: What do you seek? Good by the way of Evil? Virtue via Vice? Sade, tell me: Why this Gospel of Evil? What is your religion; where are your followers? If you're against God, you're against Man. Sade, tell me: why do you need blood to experience pleasure? Pleasure without love. Does emotion no longer exist within the cult of Man? Sade, are you diabolical or divine?" (my own translation). Anything from the first three or four of albums is great.

Mea Culpa and The Rivers Of Belief are two other highlights on the album. The last one was released as BackTo The Rivers Of Belief, consisting of the last three pieces of the album, just breathtakingly beautiful. Mea Culpa also was released as a remix ( fading shades mix) where samples from other tracks were incorporated.

This song has always been so entrancing to me, since I first heard it back in the 90s. Just the combination of everything; the chants, the sexy French whisper, the woodwind sounding melody... chef's kiss. Moby did a lot of experimental stuff around this time, too, if you're interested. My faves are Porcelain, South Side (with Gwen Stefani - check her out, too), and We Are All Made of Stars - a song he wrote in the wake of 9/11 after he was stuck in his New York City apartment for days following the attacks.

MCMXC a.D. , the album title, is 1990 in Roman numerals. And the Marquis de Sade is a French noble, author, and philosopher (of a very specific sort). His name lends itself to the term for one who derives sexual satisfaction from inflicting pain on another -- sadism.

Re: "Marquis de Sade" -- Marquis is Marquess in English, a rank of nobility right below a duke, and is pronounced like "marquee" in French. I'm not going into details (google him yourself, please, if you want), but the tales of his ... let's call them "romantic escapades", shall we? ... gave birth to the concept and term of "Sadism". Yep, *that* stuff. Research at your own peril. 🙂 Not that I give a hoot; it's just a fantastic piece of music. Thanks for the walk down memory lane!

Love how they incorporated those Gregorian chants. You did your usual excellent job of describing the mood of the song, Salvo. The Marquis de Sade, (pronounced Mar-KEE da Sod), was a French writer, (among other things), whose characters often engaged in painful sexual practices, leading to the term Sadism--i.e., S & M--being named for him. Kinda puts an extra twist on the tune, lol.

I heard this on the radio and fell in love with it. Went to the record store and asked the girl for the song that has chanting. She knew exactly what I wanted, opened the disk and played it first me to be sure. When I was paying she told me that strippers have been buying it! 😂

I first heard this tune while watching the very bizarre movie, Boxing Helena. It really stood out, being so unique and interesting.

I believe it was also in "Single White Female" with Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh.

@pommie5093 It's playing in the club/bar that Bridget follows Jennifer to after she gets her hair cut like Bridget's. It's just a quick scene as I recall. Bridget kinda sneaks in the bar and watches her talking to a guy calling herself "Ally" or "Alison" which is NOT her name obviously.

I was going to suggest that you react to Sadeness Part 1 but glad that you have already done it. Enigma is such an awesome project, They got progressively less popular with each album but that doesn't mean the songs they put out are of any less quality. They still comes with haunting melodies, chants, atmospheric landscapes and unforgettable beats. If you react to more Enigma on this channel, you should also listen to Back to the Rivers of Belief: Way to Eternity/Hallelujah/The Rivers of Belief (also from the MCMXC a.D. album) and other great singles such as The Return to Innocence, The Age of Loneliness, Gravity of Love and Push The Limits.
