Fun Fact - This song was banned in the UK in 1984 by the BBC for its suggestive lyrics. It reached number 1 on the UK Top 40 on 28 January 1984, and sold 2 million copies after spending 37 weeks in the charts (35 of those 37 weeks it wasn’t played on the radio due to the ban). Any child of the 70’s remembers having a Frankie says Relax t-shirt. As you can imagine it is still a firm favourite in all the gay clubs, even to this day and this song is guaranteed together everyone up and dancing!

It's still a firm favourite in clubs, end of. Everyone in the UK was into this at the time - and still are! (I was in my early 20s when this was first on the scene so I danced more than a few times to it!) Also since you're a Brit in Britain talking about a British song (am guessing from your comments and the way you spelt favourite), we don't say 'fun fact' here! If it's a fact, no need to announce it like they do in the US! 😉 You are right about the t-shirts.

It's exactly what you think it's about, and yes, we were on the floor when it came on.
@klaxoncow5 ай бұрын
I've heard the isolated tracks for this one. The "baw-baw-baw" is actually multiple instruments. Major part synth sound - Trevor Horn was an enthusiastic early user of the Fairlight sampling synthesiser, which could turn any sound into a playable instrument - but there's actually a guitar mirroring it at the same time to add extra dimensions to it. Indeed, what I love about that sound is that, if you listen, it's slightly different every time they play it. There's a random variance - how the multiple instruments work together, differences in the filter effects - that means it's never exactly the same sound twice. The amount of "grit" on the sound is allowed to vary and wander. This song and Blue Monday are what set the "boots and cats" rhythm for all dance music thereafter. Those two songs just knocked it out of the park - blew people's minds, with these unheard of electronic effects - that the early '90s rave culture emerged from it all (until Nirvana re-wrote the script with grunge and then being "unplugged" was the trend, in opposition to everything trying to copy Blue Monday and Relax - funny thing is, unlike most electronic copycats, both Blue Monday and Relax do both have live-played guitar on them).

Are we sure this is SELF-love? All those lads in the club in the video (and Holly Johnson's public sexuality) made me think it was an experienced, er, hand telling a nervous first-timer to relax and (as Bruce Springsteen sang about something COMPLETELY different) "we'll get to that place where we really want to go", together. Or perhaps I simply have a dirty mind.

You missed this song's meaning so much, while you're still waiting for the pitch the ball's already in the catcher's mit! (No pun intended) And then you said, "I can only picture what the club was like back in the 80's when this song was playing." No Jay, it's not a club you would go into. So eyeah, there's that!"

@@michaelproulx5795 Just rewatched it. There are a couple of scenes where a female nipple comes into view and one scene of a simulated golden shower. Also, MTV, back then, catered to teens (13-19) and a gay bar is no place for a teen. My college GF took me into a gay bar to see my response and she said I clung to her "for dear life" and she was amused by that.

X-rated is a big strong. But the BBC refused to play the song on the radio due it it's overt sexual content. I think the record company decided to respond by making a video that would instantly be banned from TV air play. It worked, telling teenagers that something is banned as too sexual will 100% make them go buy it.

I'm a UK oldie, I was there at the time, and YOU CANNOT BEGIN to imagine how big this song was at the time... nightclubs would play it 4 or 5 times a night, everyone was wearing FRANKIE SAYS t-shirts, absolute madness... The song itself is a combination of many different versions recorded by super-producer Trevor Horn, including one not even including the band!
