There's a reason Rakim is called "The God MC"!!!! He's one of the heads on the Mt. Rushmore of Hip Hop - the others being: BDK, KRS One, and Kool G Rap!!!! These dudes had some really game-changing talent - sadly, something we'll probably never see again!!!! This came out when I was 15 and I'm still bumping it! I highly recommend my favorite Eric B and Rakim track: Know The Ledge; Eric B for President and Follow the Leader are 2 others I highly recommend; thanks for your reaction on one of Hip Hop's greatest tracks!!!!!

For better or for worse, 85 to 88 hip hop music and culture were the seeds of the modern industry. Without Run-DMC there would be no commercialization of hip hop culture. Without the Beastie Boys white consumers wouldn't have become the majority consumers of rap and white rappers wouldn't be respected. Rakim created the style that every single rapper after him that uses, if wordplay is their primary style. NWA took gangsta rap to the level where Biggie, Tupac, trap, and drill rappers are simply imitators. Thanks to World Champion DJ Jazzy Jeff, Will Smith was able to start a career that made him the first rapper turned A-List actor. Public Enemy was the first rap group to be taken seriously inside and outside the culture. KRS-ONE is in a class all by himself because he still says that he IS hip hop and will not sell-out, continues to rap like he's a battle rapper, and lives up to his name as "the T'chea" by writing books, sharing his philosophy, and teaching at colleges and universities.

The beat was a James Brown sample from "Pass the Peas". Many people jokingly stated James Brown was the King of Hip Hop because his beats were sampled thousands of times. Most rappers from the late '80s were inspired by Kool Moe Dee and Grand Master Caz. They were very good with wordplay and to some extent Spoonie Gee. Spoonie Gee had one popular song that was thirty minutes long. It was popular in the streets. Unfortunately, he went to prison. The music was mostly rhyming over beats. You have to remember the beats were very important for breakdancers. Most will dance off the break (instrumental) part.

The samples came from 2 songs . 1972 Pass the Peas by the JBs which was the horns , that were also used on Heavy D's "Overweight Lover" and 1976 "Theme from the Planets" by Dexter Wansel which became that iconic hiphop break beat ! Great stuff here . Rakim was a true pioneer . It's true that other MCs were ABCing it at the time and Rakim forced everyone to step their game up with this . And as for Eric B , notice how all of the scratches are live , not sampled. They are just a bit different on each bar . True hiphop !

Your Hip Hop history learning is coming along nicely. Yes, Rakim was one of the first MCs to really start being lyrical, and playing around with rhyme schemes. There were others like Kool G Rap, Masta Ace, BDK, etc who were emerging as great lyricists, but no denying that Rakim was one of the first and best to do it.

He was the GoD MC. No one rapped like this before him. Just straight non stop lyrics. NO ONE In fact his scheme became the blueprint. Everyone started to use his pattern. It's a 4 line pattern. eg. 1st line intro (bet) 2nd line (met) 3rd line was setup 4th line payoff (set) Everyone pretty much used this as a baseline in there rap. Even to this day Inspectah Deck, GZA are two.
