Ten months after this performance in 1996, Eva Cassidy died of melanoma at the age of 33, it was such a terrible loss. The recording of Over the Rainbow was first broadcast in Britain five years later and it went viral right away. She was a regular in Washington DC at a club called Blues Alley, where this was performed. She was such a versatile musician, thank god we have a collection of her remarkable recordings. I can’t help thinking that she knew she was going to die as she sang this song. It is so emotional and really touches the heart. Beautiful soul.

I think you are correct. I'm in the health care field and I think she was probably warned by her physicians that although the initial melanoma site was surgically removed ... melanoma was likely to metastasize

It was in the movie "The Wizard of Oz" 1939; sung by Judy Garland. There are many covers of this song. One of my favorite versions is by Eva Cassidy.

Thank you for this lovely reaction. Small side note ... her musicianship had been recognized by a Washington DC icon - Chuck Brown. The Godfather of Go-go. Not a small feat. A style of music that deserves more recognition. You hear it and you have to dance. I live in the DC area and I can't fully explain what this recognition and collaboration meant. Just know it was Genius recognizing Genius

The life of Eva Cassidy was sadly cut short by melanoma in 1996 at the age of 33. This rendition of the song "Over the Rainbow" was recorded just nine months before she passed away when she was battling the illness that would soon take her life. That fact makes this performance all the more sad but it was a brilliant and moving moment. Rest in peace Eva 🙏❤️💐🕊️.

This is a song that I thought everyone in the world knew. And that’s why Eva‘s version of it is so brilliant. She took a song that everyone knows and changed the melody a lot, putting her own spin on it, and even though it’s different from the original, it’s just as beautiful if not more so. She was a generational talent, and it’s so sad that she died so very young.

It's all breathy and quiet till she cuts loose towards the end, a real listening treasure. I don’t understand why your reactions don’t get thousands of views each. You listen respectfully, do research into the bands/music/genre, and listen carefully. It’s from that- Judy Garlands version is different , and shorter, but also beautiful, and of course, classic- the original version.
