George Jones was one of George Strait's idols in country music. "Murder On Music Row" is a duet with Alan Jackson and George Strait and a great song. "When country music megastars George Strait and Alan Jackson performed “Murder on Music Row” live during the 1999 Country Music Association Awards show, the two singers used the song's blunt lyrics to critique the radio-friendly sheen of contemporary country and its threat to traditional songwriting and artistry." Radio was not playing old, classic, traditional, country music. The industry was abandoning traditional country music for more pop-friendly music. This song takes a shot at that.

George Jones was a country legend singer songwriter from the 50's-80's. He struggled with alcoholism & drugs during his life. He was married at one time to fellow country music singer Tammy Wynette & they had some great duets together. He had so many hits such as "White Lightnin'", "She Thinks I Still Care", "We Must Have Been Out Of Our Minds", "Love Bug", "Things Have Gone to Pieces", "The Race Is On", "My Favorite Lies", "I'll Share My World With You", "Take Me", "A Good Year For The Roses," "If My Heart Had Windows", "He Stopped Loving Her Today" & many others.

For your next George Jones song, I'd suggest I Don't Need Your Rocking Chair. Hopefully you can do the official video, as it's quite humorous.

Here's one you should listen to and you'll understand why this song has a lot of meaning, not just from George Jones' perspective, but Alan Jackson's too. "Alan Jackson protesting the decision to not allow George Jones to sing his full song. George refused to appear on the show." So Alan Jackson showed the Country Music Academy/Awards, what he thought of them for treating an icon like George the way they did. Alan starts off with one of his songs, Pop-A-Top but then switches to Choices, then walks off the stage to a huge round of applause. He made his point. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qnu5oWl8gpWUfpI

Tons of Jones songs you could react to. His “A good year for the rose” was covered by Elvis Costello and did well in the UK charts. “The King is Gone (and so are you)” is a fun one.

George Jones' voice was the Rolls Royce of country music. Hard to think of a better voice with that much richness and emotion. This song captures just how amazing his voice was. RIP Possum.

Thank you for this video and reaction! George was stuck in the past and the newer country passed him by. This release was sort of a comeback song for him. And no truer lyrics were ever written. I cried the first time I heard it. There is no confusing his voice with any other in country or any other genre of music. George was a rebel, but much loved by those who knew him and in the industry. Just take a look sometime at the memorial service he had and all the true country artists (and others) who came and sang his songs in tribute.

The 2 songs you've done are separated by about 40 years, in release dates. This was one of his very last solo records that hit the billboard charts. He had a few collaborations after this. I believe he was in his 70s when this song was recorded.

LOVE his voice!!! I've always found it interesting when people---especially someone from another country---like such a wicked twang; I would think it would be an acquired taste. A couple little tidbits for ya.... 1. He was in the military. 2. Jean Shepard (famous honky-tonk singer) gave him his nickname "Possum". Jean said he walked-in one day, with a new haircut, and she said "Good Lord, George, you look like a possum"!!! LOL I don't know if he's Irish---I can definitely see what you're saying---but, I wouldn't doubt it, cuz practically every other Southerner has English/Irish/Scottish roots, in some combination, including myself. You can look at alot of stuff in the South, and quite clearly see its influence---for instance, if you've never seen, or don't know what clogging is, just watch "Riverdance"!!! I'm so happy that you appreciate him!! Yeah, here's "White Lightenin'", for ya---TOO FUNNY!! kzbin.info/www/bejne/a3uuloGofsmclc0

One tribute to George was done to celebrate 50 years of his music. A singer by the name of Aaron Neville sang a cover of his song The Grand Tour. George performed this great classic with his memorable heartbroken sound, but Aaron put a little something extra in his. Worth a listen even if you don't react to it!

Merle Haggard has always been my favorite but I love ‘Possum’ too! They’re the OG’s for sure. Then you have the Outlaws with Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, David Alan Coe, Jerry Jeff Walker etc ... And don’t forget the Texas sound - early on Bob Wills, of course, ‘King’ George, Radney Foster, Pat Greene, Charlie Robison, and now a very young guy from Van Alstyne TX that I love, Austin Michael. Check out Hard to Say Goodbye, Circles, Country Cred. Awesome review! ♥️🎶🎶 And for just one instance of the influence George had on Country music, check out Trace Adkin’s Jesus and Jones.

George Jones boycotted the CMA's in the 1990's, because he was supposed to open the show with this song, but the CMA's wanted him to shorten the song for the performance, and he refused. Since George was boycotting them, the CMA's got Alan Jackson to open the show instead. Alan Jackson opened the show singing his cover of a classic called "Pop A Top." But after the solos in that song, the band suddenly stopped and started playing the chorus of George Jones' "Choices." It was kinda Alan's classy way of telling the CMA's to shove it, for not letting a legend like George Jones sing his full song. After the song ended, they all immediately left the stage and got on their bus and left. The next day, Alan was on an old country music talk show on the TNT network. The host of that show was asking him questions about it. And then they had George Jones call in to the show, and George briefly told him how proud he was of him. It was a pretty cool moment/incident that I didn't know about until I randomly came across it a few years ago. That CMA performance and that interview are both on KZbin. Labeled: "Alan Jackson- Pop a Top/Choices" and "Alan Jackson gets praises from George Jones".

Choices is a bit of a departure from what we have come to expect of George Jones but I love it. On the same album, Cold Hard Truth, he also has another song that is a bit different from most Jones song and it is '"When the Last Curtain Falls". That would be a good song for your reaction. George's songs that are iconic are The Grand Tour, A Good Year for the Roses, Things Have Gone to Pieces, Tender Years and She Thinks I Still Care, to name a very few.
