I loved this song when it first came out. I was still in school then. 30 years ago I was in an abusive marriage, a long way from home. 20 years ago I got out, and brought my kids home. This song (and a few others) kept me going, gave me strength and hope and helped me survive. I'm now a proud grandma. I was belting it out, and carried on without Gerry and you a couple of times. No matter. Some lines deserve to be sung twice.

So glad you reacted to this, I had suggested it for the sax appeal a while back. Gerry Rafferty was in a blues group with the biggest Scottish Comedian ever, Billy Connolly. As well as checking out other songs by Gerry, you should check out Billy on your other channel. The guy is a living legend and was good friends with Robin Williams.

Incredible song, always loved it, it's so honestly tragic and human about how difficult it can be who we really want to be. I remember working a job that was killing me, struggling with a relationship, and trying to "drink the night away, and forget about everything." "When you wake up it's a new morning... but you're going home.." Song absolutely nails the feeling of being lost and hopeful 'tomorrow' will treat you better, while wasting away the 'todays'.

This is one of my mom's favorite songs. A lot of the good childhood memories I have feature this song, Right On Down the Line, and another called Year of The Cat (I can't remember the artist for the last one) as the soundtrack.

I on the other hand was too young for the first go ‘round. But a Michael Mind remix was all over the discos when I went on a week long dance vacation in Lloret de Mar (Spain) while visiting family in Germany for a month. So that’s the version I always get in my head. kzbin.info/www/bejne/b6iTonSDhKuNmrs

Actually...the first time I heard this song I was a teenage girl. I loved the sax and his voice, but the lyrics and mood escaped me. It's one of those songs that seriously grow on you when maturity sets in. It's a brilliant piece.

His voice is what gets me all the time. It's just butter. Yes yes yes, the sax, but his voice, lyrics. The sax elevates it to a high level that cannot seem to be reached. Not again.....
