Take in mind, this was all hand animated, no computers to be found anywhere for the simple reason that computer animation didn't exist yet. Peter Gabriel had to sit for eight hours a day as every single frame of the clip had to be done. But Peter Gabriel absolutely LOVED doing stuff like that and he revisited it for the videos for "Big time" and "Steam"

Computer animation was around, it just wasn’t good enough to do this stuff. Tron came out in 1982 and featured computer graphics. Sledgehammer came out in 1986.

@@VinzClorthokeymasterofGozer yeah, it was good enough to digitally slap text, numbers or reeeeeally rough graphics in, but nowhere near a level that would be needed for that video. True to form. This video took about a year to film, and then another year to become a hit. Big gamble. But during the early MTV days, this was the norm. Big budgets on videos. When this was one, MTV was well established and the record companies dumped so much money into it.

@@jandvadams making a video that's so great that MTV would play it nonstop even if the song was just 'meh' (which of course isn't the case here) was a sure way to guarantee a good chunk of sales. And some not only went way overboard, they swam and discovered a new island, like Gabriel 😅

That’s not entirely true. Gabriel was the one who wanted to reduce the touring and began working on his own music. No, I wasn't kidding. "Big Time" is similar to "Sledgehammer", in that it is a somewhat funky, upbeat, dance song. Awesome to see how universal this groove is. If you don't start moving when Tony's bass line kicks in, you need to be tested for a lack of soul. Some music is just undeniable. Those who can feel it will feel it. This is one of those songs.

The innuendo was much more subtle and artful back in the day - I took my husband to a Poison concert and after listening to the lyrics for a few songs, like Unskinny Bop - he was like "Ooooh. OOOHHHH. That's naughty" :D LOL. yeeeah.

I saw Peter Gabriel in 1982 at the Houston Music Hall. He has a great sense of humor. When the lights went down for the band to come onstage, everyone was cheering and looking stage side, and they came marching through the crowd from the back. Nobody recognized his band members (they all had super long hair) until they lined up onstage and went to take an introductory bow. Peter held on to the hair of the two guys next to him as they bowed and their hair (wigs) stayed in his hands. Finally everyone recognized Tony Levin his great bass player and his guitarist David Rhodes. What a great show that was.
