This album debuted in April of 87. Every song being is good as the next. The last of the true old school rockers before Grunge took over. I joined the Army just after that and this was heard throughout the barracks at a VERY high frequency in 88 once I got out of basic. This was EVERYWHERE.

No, it wasn't an instant hit. "Welcome to the Jungle" was their first single. The main song on Clint Eastwood's "The Dead Pool". It did nothing. Nobody paid attention. When "Sweet Child O Mine" was released, THAT'S when GnR instantly became huge.

Fun fact: When this aired on mtv, the phonelines ignited because there were so many calls, from an article with the bands manager (Also for Mötley Crüe) Tom Zutaut: “Basically,” Zutaut recalled, “he says, ‘The MTV switchboard blew up last night. Too many phone calls came in, it sparked the thing and it melted.’” The channel had never had so many calls - and requests for the “Welcome To The Jungle” video continued into the following day. “Every kid in America is calling them requesting this video,” Coury told Zutaut, “and they know there’s no way we could have paid that many people to do it.”

Axl's natural voice is quite low. He used to sing with that voice. One day, he got mad and screamed a lyric in a higher voice. One of the band's gfs told him that THAT was the way he should sing. So ..he changed how he sang...and our Axl was born. If you listen to "Mr Brownstone", you can hear his more natural singing voice.

GnR literally EXPLODED onto the scene with this song and album in 1987 .. it was a fantastic cap to the Hair Band trend of the 80s, but the talent of Axl Rose (a classically trained pianist) and Slash (who makes most people's top 10 rock guitarists of all time and my personal top 5) showed they were so much more than a Hair Band

Yeah, song's about the singer's experience in moving to L.A. from Indiana and becoming exposed to the whole Hollywood/rock and roll lifestyle in that "concrete jungle," just like you pointed out. Drugs, sex, fame, etc. That line in the breakdown where he says "You know where you are? You're in the jungle, baby. You're gonna die!" is allegedly taken from something a homeless man told him shortly after he got off the bus when he first got to L.A.

Actually, the homeless man sayin' "You know where you are? You're in the jungle, baby. You're gonna die!" story was in NYC. Axl tried NY first, briefly, before goin' to L.A. Pretty sure he bussed to New York, wasn't the right scene for him, then hitch hiked to L.A.

The song is about the craziness Axl saw in LA after moving there from Indiana. If can see the reference to Indiana in the wheat in Axl's mouth when he is getting off the bus at the beginning of the video. He has said the people in LA were nuts when he first arrived. The song title (Welcome to the Jungle) came from a homeless drug addict who screamed at Axl: " Welcome to the Jungle. You're gonna die" while Axl was walking by one night

I was stationed in Long Beach when this album exploded. I used to hang out with some friends who had an apartment in Belmont Shores, always a party going on with a bunch of girls from Long Beach State. There was this guy that dropped by with a friend of ours who told us about hanging out with some of the band members totally loaded on speed balls during that time. Really crazy $h!t. Also, I walked into a used record store sometime in the summer of 88 on Sunset Strip just checking out what they had. The place was like a small warehouse with rows of records to look through. I noticed when I walked in that it was pretty much deserted except a girl and guy about my age, the girl worked there and I assumed that the guy was her boyfriend come to hang out. Anyhow, I found a record to buy and took it up to the register. As the girl was ringing me up I looked over to my left at the dude, and there sitting behind the counter was Axle Rose which was definitely a surprise. I’m not really into being wowed by celebrities, but I got an autograph just to show my shipmates…lol The 80’s were a very killer time to be young fur sure.

Strippers wish they could move their hips half as well as Axl does. but in all seriousness, my hot take is that I can put Axl and Brian Wilson in the same ballpark of tortured musical geniuses when it comes to song composing. the drugs also moved that equal parts genius and breakdown at a neck-breaking pace in a 5-6 yr span. this album absolutely changed the music industry. you can easily draw a line from this album to grunge of 91 with the Seatle groups.

Listening to this again -- it is a completely underrated rock song. It has so many great elements, originality, great writing, and more. All around great song. Pretty incredible.
