Daryl Hall is not underrated at all. Hall and Oates maybe not as well known to the younger generation as was in the 70's and 80's when they were mega-stars. But it's the 2020's other stars are shining bright. Everyone gets there moment to shine! I have never heard anyone listening to Daryl Hall say he's not good, or has rated him low. He's just not as widely KNOWN to the younger generations, that's all, definitely not underrated.

R&B radio broke Daryl Hall & John Oates in the 70's. They were from Philadelphia and early on employed elements of the "Philadelphia Sound" in their music. They also toured as a support act for the Temptations and other R&B groups.

Hall and Oates were very prominent in my life in high school 80-84! Musically and vocally they are both phenomenal! I'm mainly a classic rocker from 70's and 80's, but I'm also very eclectic and can go from AC/DC to classical to country, to jazz, so it's easy for me to like Hall and Oates! Thank you for your reactions!

In an apparently long lost interview Daryl revealed that this song has nothing to do with sex or relationships as almost everyone assumes. It's about them pushing back on their record company that wanted them to adhere to a formula in order to keep the hits coming. He's explaining to the they can keep doing this and a bit more of that but there comes a line in the sand where they won't change their creativeness any further.

After reading your comment, I think about the rumor that artists sell their soul for fame. Then hearing the lyrics "use my body, now you want my soul" makes me think there might be something truth there. Then "I can't go for that", maybe they were one of the few who said, nope, not selling my soul.
@lextek.
@lextek. 28 күн бұрын
@@mariebee3146 Yep! I didn't glean that interpretation of it all by myself though. I heard Daryl say it in an interview. Another one of H&O songs that people don't get the real meaning of is their song "Maneater". Don't take it literally. They wrote it after recording their first couple of albums when their base of operations was in Philly. That's where they grew up as well and even in their late teens were very plugged into the quite large music scene theer. Daryl was tight with the Temptations and other artists, even had a band in college, "The Temptones". Anyway, they moved to NYC to live and continue to work and record there. Maneater is about their experience there, not a woman. NYC was so much more different, the vibe, the danger, especially at night, everything being much more cut throat. Really great artists like H&O can get their point across in subtle ways, they would never get it recorded and released if they said right up front what they REALLY mean! Thanks for your response too!

Probably my favourite track by them, that engineering is soooo good. If you rock this on vinyl and play it LOUD, that bass groove is infectious. And the adlibs were SYNCOPATED, the sort of off-beat accent he uses there.

Although Daryl Hall hates the term, they are often thought of as blue-eyed soul group. But going through their history and catalog, you will see that H&O dabble in folk, R&B, rock, soul while incorporating several flavors such as reggae, new wave and jazz. If you want to listen to the most distinctly different albums, try "War Babies" (1974 - produced by Todd Rundgren) and Daryl Hall's solo album "Sacred Songs" (1980 - produced by Robert Fripp of King Crimson fame).

"I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)" was a phrase Daryl Hall used when he was pressured to go along with the crowd against his wishes. After a recording session for the Private Eyes album in Electric Lady Studios (New York City), Hall, Oates and engineer Neil Kernon improvised this song. In an interview with Mix Magazine, Daryl Hall recalls: "Remember the old Roland CompuRhythm box? I turned to the Rock and Roll 1 preset, sat down at a Korg organ that happened to be lying there and started to play this bass line that was coming to me. It's the old recording studio story: The engineer heard what I was doing and turned on the tape machine. Good thing, because I'm the kind of person who will come up with an idea and forget it. The chords came together in about 10 minutes, and then I heard a guitar riff, which I asked John, who was sitting in the booth, to play." John Oates continues in the same interview: "Daryl came up with this great bass line, using whatever sound happened to be on the organ, and Neil miked it and the drum machine. Daryl came up with the 'B' section chords, and then I plugged my 1958 Strat directly into the board, which was either an early SSL or a Trident." The next day Hall and his girlfriend Sara Allen wrote the lyrics. Hall recalls: "I wrote most of the lyrics, but Sara contributed some ideas. I sang the lead vocal, and there's the song - can't get any simpler than that!" Michael Jackson has confessed that this greatly influenced his hit song "Billie Jean." Daryl Hall recalls that when they were both recording "We Are The World," Jackson told him he hoped Hall didn't mind that he copped the groove. Hall told him he did a good job of stealing it because he didn't even notice. John Oates (from an interview with Livedaily): "'I Can't Go for That' is one of the most sampled songs from our catalogue, maybe ever for all we know. It's been sampled on so many songs. I can name five or six versions of it. Just last year Simply Red did a song called 'Sunrise,' which was basically 'I Can't Go for That.' The entire song. It wasn't a sample, it was the actual track. He just wrote a different verse over it. Puff Daddy sampled it, De La Soul sampled it. I like it [when our music is sampled]. I like when people have a different take on what you do. That's quite a compliment." (Songfacts.com)

They were and R&B group. They later moved more into mainstream pop but would occasionally revisit their R&B roots in songs like this one.

Asia, yes that off beat, that catches back up again, is called SYNCOPATED. That takes talent to do seamlessly like that.

I love this song so much because it reminds me senior year of high school and just having good times cruising around with my friends after school or on the weekends. Another one that makes me with I could go back to that time, lol. Thanks guys! ❤

They were/are an iconic songwriting team. So many many hits in 1970s and 1980s. You should check out some episodes of "Live From Daryl's House" on KZbin.

According to Michael Jackson this song gave him the idea for the beat to “Beat It”… Hall and him were good friends.

The Daryl Hall & CeeLo Green colab was done in 2012. But you guys can also check out Daryl Hall with the Roots playing the same song. When I 1st saw Hall & Oates they were on Soul Train. I couldn’t believe my eyes at 1st so I started adjusting the color on the TV!! Lmao 😅🤣😆😂 Also when 1st heard of the name Hall & Oates, I thought it was a cereal!! Lol 😂🤣😆😂🤪 But check those out, they’re probably the best live versions.

The rythm in the beggining of this song is very similar to a simply red song, both are great songs.❤
