First, Merry Christmas, Amanda! I hope you are doing well, my metal sister! That being said, Hallowed Be Thy Name is about a man on Death Row. He is getting ready to die by being hung. And on the walk to the gallows, he goes through the five stages of grief -- deciding to place his soul in the hands of God at the end, hence his exclamation: "Hallowed be Thy Name!" May we all be so fortunate to face our own deaths as courageously. As for the song, the music itself represents the anxiety of what the Prisoner is going through by slowly speeding up, all the way through to the end. And, lastly, Amanda, two facts about this song. The first is, it is older than I am, being performed in 1982. Second, this is actually the first time anyone heard this song, as this performance at the Hammersmith in 1982 was before the album dropped, being one of Bruce Dickinson's first performances as lead vocalist of Iron Maiden. And, Amanda, this performance is what I call the "Ghost Love Score" of the 1980s. It is that good, all thanks to the genius and talent of Bruce Dickinson and Iron Maiden.

I have been an Iron Maiden fan since I was a teenager, I'm 54 now. I've seen them in concert numerous times and everytime I swear it was hands down the best I've ever seen. They sound as good live as they do in the studio. And a fun fact, Iron Maiden travel in their own Boeing 747 aircraft with all of their crew and equipment , and the singer Bruce, is the pilot. If you have the chance to see them live, do yourself a favor and go, you will not regret it.

Maiden are one of those bands that tell the story through the music as much as the lyrics. Bruce is a great vocalist and the rest of the band are masters of their instruments. Other Maiden gems you might consider looking at are Run to the Hills, Flight of Icarus, Dance of Death (live En Vivo), Paschendale, Fear of the Dark (live) and the Rime of the Ancient Mariner (inspired by the poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge (live Flight 666)). Bruce Dickinson, the vocalist of Iron Maiden is very theatrical, and is great at telling a story in the Lyrics of their songs. Dance of death is a great example of this, also live. Back in 2005-07 or so i think. Great performance They did do Phantom of the Opera as well, My first thought when you brought up the Phantom of the Opera, was you should check out Nightwish doing their version of it back when Tarja Turunen was the lead singer.

(That song has a different singer who infuses a grittier feel than ones like this that feature the operatic vocals of Bruce Dickinson, but it's still great stuff. Lead singer Bruce Dickinson is considered one of the best veteran vocalists in metal, or really in the genre period. He’s known for his ability to do tons of high, sustained belting. And as someone with a low voice, I know that continuous high notes like those are a real vocal workout. The band is a longtime heavy metal heavyweight.

The rest of Maiden's debut album was pretty much on par with the New Wave of British Heavy Metal scene at the time in the late 70's/early 80's. "Phantom of the Opera", though, was a song that certainly separated them from the rest of the pack, and by quite a large margin. By the time Killers (1981) and The Number of the Beast (1982), they were instant classics, but primarily because of the foundation laid by "Phantom of the Opera" ..... an otherworldly song by a band of the same otherworldly stature.

Pretty old metalhead here. I've been into Maiden for over 35 years. It's so amazing seeing someone from your age group and your background get into that song the way you did. Welcome to our club, my dear 😉 The way you just kinda got carried away and even started thrashing a little bit was so cool. Ok, here's what you need to do next. Metal, especially bands like Iron Maiden, Metallica, megadeth, etc, are way better live than any other way to experience it. I can tell you would LOVE it. It's hard to explain, but the true metal "feeling" is more felt than heard. Being right there, you have all of that in front of your eyes, the music the crowd and the whole vibe just drives right through you. And in regards to mental health,,, something about is kinda healing. The whole place is a bit on the dangerous side, especially in the pit. But it makes you feel so alive. nowhere will you be safer or more looked after than with your new family in the pit 🤘 If you haven't yet, Cemetery Gates from Pantera would be awesome to see you do! For sure one of their better songs that protrays a story better is Rime of the Ancient Mariner, and as for a metal version of Phantom Nightwish did one and the best one for that song is from their End of an Era show. In other videos especially The Trooper you'll see more of Bruce Dickinson (Singer) running around like a mad man.

I smile every time someone new hears this song for the first time. This is normally reactors introduction to Iron Maiden and it is the perfect song to show off the power of the band. My mental health journey is long and still ongoing. Even though I never attempted suicide I've thought about how to do it many times. Looking back I think I had undiagnosed depression and anxiety since junior high. I was very shy and introverted that I didn't participate in a lot of things. I was teased and bullied and it was metal music that got me through I truly believe. It's always been my outlet for rage. My dad was hospitalized around that time for depression so that could've been a trigger. I went in the military and it got worse at first but then it got much better as I gained confidence and made friends. Shortly after I left though my dad passed. I was twenty four. My mom was in her sixties by then. I did everything to help her out and even though I was having those thoughts again I knew I had to keep going for her. She lived until almost ninety so I'm much older now. After she passed though I was back why do I stick around? I love the rest of my family and know the pain it would bring them so I hold on still. Now I've been having a lot of medical problems, afib in my heart, early stage cancer and other more minor things. I've been hospitalized three times in as many years and I just got out again just a few weeks ago. This time brought me to the brink. There were a couple of nights a couldn't sleep or get any rest and my mental health suffered big time. The day they got me out I had a full blown panic attack and wanted to die. There was one nurse who went way beyond just her job and got me through and I'll be forever grateful to her. I'm still having issues since then and now the doctors are talking about surgeries to fix things that can be fixed. That on top so many regrets of bad decisions I've mad in life keeps me close to the edge all the time. I have mind numbing headaches and pain from arthritis that keeps awake many nights. I plan to seek out a therapists again soon. I had one about a decade ago but we became friends and ended up talking about our mutual love of heavy metal than ever taking about my deep seated demons. People say you have to go through all that to end up where you are now. I have a great job but that's about it. I have one real friend and work mates who I can't wait to get back and see after the weekend. Work is my anchor and weekends are to much time in my own head.

Heavy metal was my bedrock as a troubled kid with horrendous self image issues. I always found solace in the lyrics, knowing I wasn’t alone in feeling the pain of loneliness and the general bitterness of life. The music was a counter to all of the negativity, giving energy along with sense of belonging to a group of other “outcasts”. I’m 52 now and heavy metal is still my source of peace.

I grew up listening to metal and Maiden were the first band I ever saw live back in 1988 when I was 15. They always put on an amazing show. My music taste has expanded to all kinds of different genres over the years and now at 50 years old, this is still not only (in my opinion of course) not only one of the best Maiden songs, but one of the best heavy metal songs ever written. It has so much going on. It has everything you need from a metal song. Drama, tension, storytelling, a slow and spine tingling build up, a superb guitar solo, incredible and powerful vocals. I have listened to this song what must be thousands of times over the last 40 years since I first got into Maiden as a kid. It was my big sister who introduced me to them and will always remind me of her. Sadly my family lost my big sister earlier this year to cancer. I miss her terribly, but will always have my memories of her getting me into rock and metal as a child.

There is a group I think you would be perfect to hear. They are called Hilung the song I’d say try first is Anoana. My reason for saying this is I personally struggle with complex PTSD severe anxiety and depression and stress related issues and often il use music to help guide how my mind is making me feel to a more functional path. This group and this song in particular is something primeval and I’m not the first person to say it. It’s like something we have all lost is triggered in the depths of our minds by this music. And I’ve never come away from listening to them without feeling at least a little more positive. It’s not the typical music I see you have reached to but I think it’s something that you potentially need to. 🤙🏻

Growing up, I had heard metal before with Metalica, Black Sabbath, etc. It wasn't until I heard Iron Maiden for the first time that I really got a feel for what metal can really do. I liked metal and rock before, but Iron Maiden made me really feel the music in a way I didn't know was possible. Iron Maiden does something the other metal bands just don't. Even the instrumental parts of their songs tell a story. Kudos for giving them a listen!

Also, I've struggled with suicidal thoughts since my youth but this band and their messages have literally gotten me through many of my darkest days. Iron Maiden are all about hope and learning from the past in order to continue moving forward... it's probably been mentioned here but they do have a tune called Phantom of the Opera. They indeed are extremely theatrical and Bruce could 100% line up Broadway for miles and mile BUT he's too much of a renaissance man to have time for that lol you MUST react to the Rime of the Ancient Mariner (based on a poem from the 1700's.... anyway, cheers and keep on keeping on

Great reaction! One thing I will say first is, he wasn’t innocent. He did the crime. He even says he’s not sorry. Another great song that deals with anxiety is Fear of the Dark. And I also recommend always doing a live performance of Maiden. I think they actually sound better live!

Nice reaction to my all time favourite band. And i appreciate your mental health message very much. Since you mentioned "metal version of Phantom Of The Opera"... Maiden has one, although it's not the song you might be familiar with, it just has the same title. There's another great band who does a metal version of Andrew Lloyd Webber song though and I'm sure you'll definitely get a LOT of requests to check them out too. But I'll suggest more Maiden, and specifically "Rime Of The Ancient Mariner" from 2008. Or... you know... any Maiden song from any live or studio recording, really.

Fun fact: Steve Harris wrote Phantom of the Opera (which pre-dates the play version by several years) when he was in another band in 1975 and the band he was in told him it is too difficult, So on Christmas day 1975 he formed Iron Maiden to play his more complex arrangements and there are a fair few on their 17 studio Albums😜 Each album has several bangers/great songs on them👏 Welcome to the rabbit hole🤘 Up the mighty Irons!!!🤘🤘🤘

This is a great example of why Metal Heads are so passionate about their metal bands and music. They love them til the end and beyond. Maiden still has a huge following and all of their original followers/ fans. It just does something to your soul

I love how Bruce captures everything from the low to the madness of thought someone waiting for execution must feel. The music accompanies his manic moments perfectly!! You should give Judas Priest Beyond the realms of death a listen. Keep up the great reviews and helping folks!!

the Clansman live in rio was freaking epic by maiden. special song to me being of Scottish decent and irish. i plan on visiting Scotland here hopefully with in the next year or so.

Probably already mentioned, but Iron Maiden _did_ perform a song _Phantom of the Opera_ - however it was their own composition, based on Gaston Leroux's original 1909 novel, and appeared on their first album in 1980, six years _before_ Andrew Lloyd Webber's 1986 musical.

Maiden is the ultimate jam band. Good times. A lot of their songs are stories, poems, legends, etc. from the past. These guys are much deeper than most folks think. 🤟😎 *btw - Bruce raises his arm(s) to expand his chest cavity, thereby expanding his air capacity, so that he has an easier time sustaining those super long belts and notes.

If you're looking for something uplifting, I recommend Helloween - Keeper of the seven Keys Part II. Whenever I listen to this album, I feel better. There are funny/silly songs like Rise and Fall, yet even the more serious songs like Eagle fly free or I want out are uplifting. And the, there is the epiy Keeper of the seven Keys. (There is alos a cool live version from the Pumpkins United Tour.)

Iron Maiden are one of those bands that I would consider to be one of the most accessible metal bands. They are really upbeat, and in my humble opinion, wholesome.

Hi Amanda,.....Love MAIDEN....and this is an absolute classic....Not just MAIDEN....but Metal in general...It's awesome!........Amazing to think they have been going since the mid 70's....Now saying that...please can I make a music suggestion?...It maybe not what your used to...but please give them a try...an ALL female Japanese rock band called "BAND-MAID"...They are predominantly rock...but incorporate a number of genre's..sometimes in the same song....Yes they sing mainly in Japanese..but with a splash of English..For me they are the best band I have heard in nearly 30 years....(im 55).....I believe this so much..I have flown out to Japan twice from the UK to see them LIVE...There are many great Japanese rock and metal bands to discover if you give them a chance...including another fav of mine..TRiDENT......again ALL female (trio) rock band..I found both coming from watching MAIDEN reactions years ago...If you find the language a barrier..Just think of it as another instrument and enjoy it as a part of the music...The sound these ladies have is something that has been missing from Western music for many many years. IMO.
