Bruce Dickinson range : 4.25 octaves According to a report published in the Daily Mirror, Dickinson has an estimated vocal range of 4.25 octaves. His voice led to the nickname "The Air Raid Siren", which Billboard states is "due to the ferocious power of his singing", although Dickinson claims it actually originated from a fan complaint.

Oh that story gets even better. The airline he worked for at the time loaned him that plane when they were doing their first international tour and he thought he was going to get in trouble for the paint job he put on it but the airline thought it was awesome and left it on. The only problem was that since it was still in circulation as one of their jets there were a lot of people who refused to get on a jet that already had a skeleton on the side of it. Guess they thought it was bad luck. Karl Smallwood has a video about it.

The first time I saw Maiden was in June 1982 for the Number of The Beast tour and I was completely blown away by how good Dickinson was live. I have seen them many times since and he always brings his A-game to every show as did the band. Probably the best live band I have ever seen. He has lost a little bit of range nowadays but given his age (63), years he has been singing, and that he had throat cancer, he still sounds amazing. He is also, in my humble opinion, the best frontman in the business. He commands the stage like few can with his energy and his ability to engage the crowd and make them so much a part of the show. If you ever see them live, be prepared to be exhausted by the end of the show.

11:02 this show was from their Somewhere Back In Time Tour in 2008/09, he was 49 at the time of this particular show (16th March 08) , he turned 50 in August 2008. He’s actually the ‘baby’ of the band, 2 years younger than the next youngest (guitarist Dave Murray). On this tour, Hallowed was the final song of the 3 song encore after a 90-100 minute main set. The main set kicked off with Aces High, which is one of their highest tempo and energy songs (often faster when they play live). You can see his shirt is soaked in sweat, this was in Toronto, Canada in winter/spring. They took this show to India, Australia and South America (during summer in the Southern Hemisphere), can only imagine how much more physically taxing that would have been on them. An interesting time to listen to Bruce would be on any of the songs from The Book Of Souls album. When they recorded that album he had 2 prominent tumours in his throat and base of his tongue (one about the size of an apricot, the other slightly smaller), once they finished recording the album he went to a doctor and was diagnosed with throat cancer. One of the things that is most striking about Bruce is his stage presence and energy, he sings full tilt for the whole nearly 2 hour set, all the while he is running, jumping and making large body movements (he’s very theatrical on stage), and none of it effects his vocal performance!

Iron Maiden is one of my top bands of all time. I see them as more musically important than Metallica, Slayer, or Megadeth. They blended the drive of British punk with metal so perfectly. Punk??? No. There is nothing punk about this song. Iron Maiden took what Black Sabbath was doing in the early 70s and sped up the riffs while adding more virtuosity in the solos coming from legendary guitar players that were less well known such as Shawn Lane. Look Shawn Lane up. There’s nothing punk about this. It’s all metal. Metal and punk are complete opposites of what came out of the rock revolution started by the Godfathers of metal, Black Sabbath.

What's amazing is Bruce has had throat cancer and still belts out these songs! I've had the joy of seeing them live twice and honestly, i lost my voice both times! After growing up listening to Iron Maiden, hearing Bruce shout "Scrrrrrrrrrreeeeeam for me Donington!" and the crowds reaction... it sent shivers down me and i promised myself I'd see them live at Donington just so I could hear him say it. 18 years later i finally got to see them live, at Download Festival in Donington. He kept saying "Scream for me Download" and it just wasn't getting the same response... then, he finally said "Scream for me Donington!" and I swear to god the place nearly exploded. I screamed my head off, I lost my voice that night and I don't regret a single second of it! This is the band that got me into alternative music and they will always have a special place in my heart :) you absolutely must continue to react to more of their songs, you're in for a treat!!

Hey Julia welcome to the world of Iron Maiden. This is the band that got me into bass guitar when I was a mere 13 years old (summer of 89). Your journey has only begun with this band, and I'd highly recommend diving deep into the songs not just the hits. There are some incredible gems throughout their catalog. I would start with the early works of Iron Maiden when Paul Di'Anno was the singer. Granted he was only on the first two Maiden albums, but he's a huge part of the Maiden legacy (and early success). He has a very rich bluesy voice, but he could hit incredible notes (Twilight Zone is a prime example). To me one of his best vocal performances is on Strange World from their debut album. I personally love the studio version of that song with his voice because it flows so well. The Prodigal Son (from the album Killers) is rarely played live, but is an amazing track that showcases his more flowy voice. For harder edge either could give a listen to Innocent Exile (Killers) or Phantom of the Opera. I mentioned these tracks because they are the deeper cuts plus rarely if ever played live (except Phantom which is played live often). UP THE IRONS!!! ;-) PS the studio version of Hallowed Be Thy Name (from Number of the Beast) is a lot slower and Bruce really draws out the "low." in that version.

Bruce's definitely a storyteller. For Bruce's best vocals (quality) live, chose selections from Live at Hammersmith '82. There's sort of a limited selection vs their catalog of hits, but he's still young and his voice is at his prime. Other songs to consider include The Number of the Beast, Wasted Years, Rime of the Ancient Mariner, & Aces High. There are so many hits to list, but this is a good sample to choose from during their great run of albums.

Despite it being the same song, it will be a fascinating look and tbh its a very different and gritty experience.

I'm watching your video again, one year later because you brought me to Iron Maiden finally. I learned to love this band in a way i can't describe it not exactly enough in english. This reaction video from you, is something very precious and unique for me. The combination of this overwhelming performance, your excited reactions and honestly you, as a REALLY beautiful and attractive woman....is just wonderful to watch. Everytime i cry of happyness. You and this reaction video of a band i love to death, is the most wonderful entertainment for me. ❤❤❤from germany

The Talisman (live) is the best pick for analyzing vocals I think. I have never seen Bruce stay still for so long. So hard to sing that he cant be running around as he normally does.

I was 14 when I first saw them live -- coincidentally about 1000 feet away from where I am watching this right now.

I'd love to hear more about aging singers. Perhaps something on Dio or Iron Maiden where there is plenty of great videos over long periods of time to use as examples.

Awesome to see a reaction to the legendary Maiden. Really hoping you'll do more of them. They were the very first band that started getting me into any sort of metal music when i was maybe 9 years old or so. Still love them now, more than 20 years later. Even though i mostly listen to more extreme forms of metal these days, legends like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Accept and a bunch of others, will always be very dear to me. Some other stuff from Maiden to check out: Dance of death (En Vivo! Chile 2011)- kzbin.info/www/bejne/faCloJ5nrclsaa8 Rime of the ancient mariner (Flight 666 dvd, 2008) - kzbin.info/www/bejne/aHLQo3yvmdOLf9U Fear of the dark (live Rock in Rio 2001) - kzbin.info/www/bejne/hqHFn6iYi7Sdhrs Anyway, cheers from Sweden and have a great weekend! :)

The way like you described the felling of listening iron maiden couldn't be more beautiful! It's exactly just like that. I remember me crying like a baby being in an iron maiden gig listening this song.

That sustained note in the beginning is actually way shorter than in the earlier days, but time has it's way with us all.

Examples of some other singers like Bruce who still had powerful voices at 50+: Ronnie James Dio (RIP), Lemmy Kilmister (RIP), and Rob Halford.

Hi Julia, great reaction to Maiden and it is nice to see you have entered the realms of the greatest heavy metal band in the world. They started in 1975 and they are still going strong. Bruce Dickinson is one of the three vocalists the band had so far, with him been the longest in the band. He was about 51 here and I think still pretty good at it. If you here him at an earlier age you will probably notice some differences. He is considered one of the best front men and singers in metal. Up the irons!!!

Julia the contemporary singing specialist has by now expanded to being also a metal specialist 🥰. @Julia : did you ever think you would also move into this direction when you started with reaction videos?

I would love a video about how the voice changes as people age! That's something I've always known happens just from listening to people, but it would be interesting to learn the science of it!

The version from 1982 is the best one. Bruce’s voice has deteriorated just a tad, since his battle with throat concert. But he’s still excellent. Also, this version is…FAST!

Just to let you know about the quicker pace live, the drummer (Nicko McBrain, and yes that is his name) has a bad habit of getting caught up live and going at a faster pace. He's claimed that Bruce Dickinson has yelled at him more than once for it.

Towards the end of some of the tours back in the day the tempo kept creeping up almost playing their songs in double time 😅

Whenever you react to iron you should go for the studio versions, original tracks. Young Bruce. Or his solo stuff up to "Chemical Wedding" album it's where he was on his "voice prime".

I randomly found this channel, but it was surprising to not see any chris cornell reaction vids. Probably the most versatile and naturally gifted rock singers of any generation. I love vocal coach reactions, and I guarantee if you never have seen him in his prime your mind will be blown! I'll subscribe in anticipation 😁✌🎤🎼🎵

This is usually the encore, so they already have played and sung for over 2 hours. on this tour particularly they flew once round the earth to play in some uncommon places, like India, Colombia or Australia. They took their own plane and flew from country to country. And Bruce was the pilot. :-) If you want to hear Bruce at his peak, you should check out the version from Hammersmith 82. Bruce is not only a great singer, he is also a great story teller. Just check out Rime of the Ancient Mariner

Julia, it's so amazing how you get into this band knowing you weren't even born in 1975. You get it about the heavy metal bands in those days. We'll never see bands like this again after all these great bands are retired or past on. Thank you Julia for a great video...
