Hugh Laurie is one of the most multi-talented people I know. A graduate of Eton (where Princes William & Harry schooled) and of Cambridge (Anthropology honours), he was an olympic-rated rower. He and his uni pal Stephen Fry formed a satirical comedy duo which starred on UK tv for 20 yrs before Hugh went to LA for House. Unlike most tv stars, he and his wife Jo have been happily together for 35 yrs and have three kids. My oldest son got to know the family over 25 yrs ago. He is a genuinely funny guy, very self-deprecating, and rather perfectionist, as his Scots Presbyterian upbringing demanded.

An absolutely wonderful piece by Hugh Laurie. Between this and House, you'd never know he was English as he adapts accents so well. I've no doubt you'd love his various roles in the last three Blackadder series', completely different characters each time. That said, one of his crown jewels is his, and Stephen Fry's, brilliance in the Jeeves and Wooster episodes. Fry and Laurie bring the P. G. Wodehouse characters to wonderfully charming life in those adaptations of the short stories. If you ever have the time, Maggie, please watch at least one of the Blackadder (seasons 2, 3 and 4) and Jeeves and Wooster episodes. I promise you won't regret the time invested.
@williamoates17549 ай бұрын
Magnificent production of the P.G. Wodehouse characters by Fry and Laurie. I have the box set which I have watched many times over. Laurie's genius on the piano shines through the silly 1920's style songs he tries out on Jeeves, the highlight for me is when he does the duet with Jeeves, saying "sir" after each of his particular vocal contributions. Even the introduction to the episodes were iconic.

It's not just that Hugh Laurie can play the piano brilliantly... Or that he can sing with superb taste and control... It is that he understands the blues and can present it from a place of deep, deep love and emotion. It's like he's channeling the voice of so many traditional performers of New Orleans's Storyville neighborhood.

Check out Laurie's work in Jeeves & Wooster, a comedy series based on the P.G. Wodehouse stories. The bandleader is the legendary New Orleans muscian/composer/producer Allan Toussaint (R.I.P.). He was one of the most influential and pivitol figures in New Orleans R&B from the 1950s forward. Laurie has thought highly of Toussaint for decades and felt honored to be able to perform with him.

Sir Hugh's Jazz is amazing. His stylistic influences are from the early New Orleans and Chicago Jazz scene and it shows in the majority of his work. He is a classically trained pianist though so some of that comes out from time to time as well. I can (and have) spent days listening to his stuff.

Great reaction to a great video! I first got to know Hugh Laurie through comedy, appearing routinely with his best friend and comedic partner Stephen Fry, first in episode of The Young Ones (along with other comedic talents Ben Elton and Emma Thompson), then later in the Fry & Laurie works and then in Wooster & Jeeves, adapting the Wodehouse stories where Laurie played upper class nincompoop Wooster and Fry playing the very intelligent gentleman's gentleman Jeeves who constantly gets Wooster out of the comically idiotic situations he gets himself into. When I saw him in House I was nonplussed as I loved his comedic works and found it disconcerting to see him as an angry, arrogant, acerbic, addicted anti-hero. No bueno. He was very good in the role as he is a consummate professional, and he earned every penny he made, but I just didn't enjoy the show at all. He managed to somehow work piano playing into every one of his shows, and he's obviously a master at it. Love this video!
