from the moment i heard them, i knew Sokoninaru was a band i was always looking for, but didn't know i was looking for. my favorite band on the planet right now, everything they do is both utterly mind blowing and transcendentally beautiful. as others have mentioned, there's a drum cam that i highly recommend, and for other songs, Tenohira De Odoru, Complicated System, Re:Program, and Lament Moment are all masterpieces. you really can't go wrong.

It's been three years now that I've been immersed in the Japanese rock scene and Sokoninaru have been there from the beginning. Even after this time, the song still has a strong fascination for me, and seeing you react is a special joy, because somehow I see myself again in that moment. I also see the similarities to BAND-MAID. Since the song "Dilemma", which is stylistically similar to Hello Sleepwalker's "Shinwa Houkai", as well as "Different" in parts to Sokoninaru's "Tenohira De Odoru", written at the same time. Kanami seems to have found a lot to like about these two bands, in my opinion, because since that time her compositions have become more complex, which makes the analysis even more interesting for musicians in particular.

To your question about the Japanese text, we have a mixture of; [Hiragana/ひらがな/平仮名] Pronunciation letters. I think you know about this one. [Kanji/かんじ/漢字] In this case, [鳴] is Kanji, said to be imported from China way back.(5-6th century?) [鳴] is pronounced "な=na" here. Putting "る" together, it makes a verb "鳴る=naru", which means "ring (in terms of sound)" Kanji has a meaning by the letter itself and also has 2 or more ways of pronunciation in general. Japanese have many words that are the same if written by hiragana. Can be figured out in a conversation by the context or the bends/melodies of the word, but when it comes to writing you need to choose the proper kanji for each words. [Katakana/カタカナ/片仮名] Used mostly to pronounce and writings for foreign names and foreign words that suit the way it is (like food, computer, music!! etc). Wave Potter = ウエーヴ・ポッター Hamburger = ハンバーガー Hard Rock = ハードロック Oh, I forgot the most important one. BAND-MAID = バンドメイド * Akane used to have this version on her kick drum. Have a nice day !!!

In between the last 2 times i went to japan i learned the n5 kanji as pictographs and even though i couldn't read their pronunciations it was a lot of fun seeing 西口 in the train stations and knowing it was the west exit. Like knowing they could be used even without actually being able to read them was a huge eye opener about their usefulness.

Hard to realise that the youthful looking Juko and Misaki have been playing together for 10 years now, with the drummer Shinya here for half that time. They have a handful of albums, and do a lot of covers for KZbin also. Depends on the cover how mathy they get, though their own originals are very complex. Pure talent under the radar until the past three or four years. The group proper are Juko and Misaki, with the drummer being semi permanent - a few months ago Shinya left the band, with the present drummer in place being Saito.

Tricot is not math rock, it's midwest emo. The band's members never heard of the term "math rock" or listen to the bands of this subgenre before people, including journalists, started to ask them questions about "why do you like math rock, what are your influences", etc. It's just that the majority of modern Japanese musicians which play in lighter (and less sophisticated compared to something like prog rock) subgenres of rock music are not afraid of displaying their skill/technical ability (not for the sake of displaying it, but for the sake of creating unique and weird songwriting styles) compared to their Western counterparts for a bunch of different reasons.

This is a great band, super-talented, lotta fun. Been listening to them now for a few months and something I noticed: I don't replay their songs very much for some reason. I'm initially jazzed about the insane musicianship, and the frequent arrests, but it doesn't seem like I'm feeling a lot more than this. I'm thinking because they use that arrest so much, while it def keeps the listener's attention (the analog in video would seem to be constantly clipping the camera), the songs do not seem to deliver a strong emotional component (tell a story). Their songs have a lot of wow moments at the expense of driving home a stronger emotional chord (to me). I would like to hear them write a few songs with a stronger and dominant melody, helluva lot less use of arrest, and see how it goes. If anyone knows if they have some of these, I'd love to hear them.
@VladimirChupin
@VladimirChupin 3 жыл бұрын
Oh yes... That's what "math rock" is all about. Many bands actually abuse this idea of being too gimmicky in their composition. I feel the same way about Polyphia. Constant "wow, they are so amazing!", and no desire to replay any of their songs...
@icipher6730
@icipher6730 2 жыл бұрын
Why other compositional techniques and songwriting tools aside from melodism can't be used as a vehichle for storytelling (I also don't understand why you equate "telling a story" with "emotional component", not every story has to carry some kind of an emotional charge in itself at all in order to be moving)? Does every band has go the "normie" way, i.e. heavily relying on melody and nothing else? There are tons of other ways to deliver a story in music, e.g. chord progressions (which oftentimes can have a much more apparent effect on me emotionally than the overlapping melody), tonal shifts, playing with rhythmic components, etc.
@drogonr9318
@drogonr9318 2 жыл бұрын
@@icipher6730 There are no hardwired rules in music, as in art. I used the language "telling a story" to convey the idea of "emotional component" - but it's just a phrase that can be used in many different useful ways. Linguistic quibbles aside, a minimalistic black dot on a white canvas could convey "story" and "emotion" to someone, but it would be an unusual someone. I enjoy this band for their musicianship and creativity - but most of their music does not make me laugh or cry.

Hey Wave, one thing that always made me think when i listened to sokoninaru (esp. their covers) - as a musician, how hard is it to pick at individual notes on a guitar while singing at the same time? I can't even strum chords and sing at the same time, but at the pro level, is this something everyone can eventually achieve if they put in enough time, or is suzuki's brain just wired differently? Some of their covers, the songs are written for bands with a singer that doesnt play guitar, but he does both at the same time so effortlessly.
@VladimirChupin
@VladimirChupin 3 жыл бұрын
Well, Kanami from BAND-MAID has said many times that it's extremely difficult to play the guitar and sing at the same time, and because of that, she has certain compassion for Kobato-san, who has to play the guitar and sing when doing their live shows. It's always good to have a dedicated vocalist. Suzuki is really good at this, indeed. I think after some training, it's possible to think in two parallel streams of consciousness, but still, only if you automate both singing and playing. No creativity is possible under these conditions.
@WavePotter
@WavePotter 3 жыл бұрын
Yes what Vladimir said! When I used to play and sing in a band, I’d have to practice parts like that one section at a time at a slower tempo, really figuring out which syllables landed on which notes, then they kinda got tied together in my head into one activity. But it took a lot of practice and that was for songs like China Grove and Sweet Home Alabama. No where near as fast paced and complex!
