It was a true story that inspired Tyler to write the song and he started a charity for victims of sexual assault

I remember hearing this song for the first time and thinking of how groundbreaking it was that someone was singing about this out loud for the world to hear. It was released in 1989 when this type of abuse still wasn’t talked about even privately, much less publicly or was swept under the rug. I commend Aerosmith for helping abolish some of the shame people feel who have been victims of abuse. Steven Tyler also started Janie’s Fund to help abuse victims. In 2017 he opened Janie’s Place in Atlanta, GA, a shelter for abuse victims and in 2019 a second Janie’s Place opened in Bartlett, TN.

I remember the first time I heard the song, with the opening lines, I thought, 'Are they singing about what I think they're singing about?' Bc like you said, incest SA wasn't publicly acknowledged back then. Then as the song went on, it's clear. Janie was raped by her dad. Mind blown.

Janie was arrested in the story. It’s one of the lyrics, “They say when Janie was arrested, they found him underneath the train”

Right. It's also the reason for the deperate outcry of "run away from the pain". It's just sad that this happens way too often and most children do not have the power to get out. Though there are many anonymous help lines they could turn to, but little kids don't know about them. Raising awareness is the most important thing. Has to be part of school education, very early on.

Janie did but I think my mom may have confessed to it once she realized Janie wasn't lying. The detective led her away to a squad car. This song was inspired when Steven Tyler spent time in rehab with so many women who turned to substance abuse after being sexually assaulted by their fathers or close family members. He helped build two centers for women who have been abused so they can get the help they need to get their lives back. They are called Janie's House and are located in Tennessee and Georgia.

No one was talking about incest rape at the time this song came out ….

absolutely great point about the mom theory. But then remembered the lyrics. Janie did it. And good for her. Even telling someone, asking for help, is frightening. That despair and constant living nightmare would make anyone snap.

Well, think about it. If he'll mess with his daughter. He'll put his wife in the hospital, if not a coffin. How can you go up against that? When you have no power, no influence and in their world? All you're seen as, is the pretty airhead that likes to buy clothes and jewelry. You're dismissed as a human until he needs his arm candy.

For me? It always come off as the woman being a step-mom vs a mom. I think it's because the way she hesitates and backs away. Like, should she say or do something? But what? No one will believe me.

Great review! No sequel to this video. I remember this video when it came out and never thought about what happened to mom. I am against gun control even though I am 55 and never owned a gun.

I REALLY don’t think this is about gun control, it’s not a political song. It’s about a victim of incest who has to take matters into her own hands to stop the abuse because nobody believes her. She has to stop the pain by either killing herself or her dad.

Janie killed him, as the lyrics state in the story. Also in the lyrics, "When Janie got arrested...". No hidden meaning to this song. Straight to the point aweness. 👍 Great song to react to.

The lyrics hint at the intent of this song. Her dog days just begun allude to the weight and struggle Janie will have to endure from both the PTSD of the SA and the homicide. She indeed needed a blanket in a cold cruel world wherein she has to "put a bullet in his brain." The fact that you see so little representation of the mother is indicative of family abuse where the co-collaborators do so through there passive allowance of the abuse to occur. Mom wasn't supporting Janie after the shooting either. There is no part 2. This is the first song to openly address SA. Genius. Cheers.

You are wrong. One of the band members had a girlfriend who was sexually abused by her father and told her boyfriend, she wish she had a gun, cause she would have killed the man. If anything, it would be about how a gun can level the playing field for a woman being abused by a man.
