The talent there for 3 days is mind blowing and was the beginning of hippie and counterculture music hitting big and moving into the mainstream Janis Joplin Jimi Hendrix Jefferson Airplane Richie Havens Momas and Poppas County Joe and the Fish Ravi Shankir Otis Redding You must understand that for a generation raised in1950 on dean martin and frank sinatra This music blasted into our souls Raw, political ,anti war , singing of free love and peace. The singers were integrated. Black and white together. This was a new generation There is a great film with all of the videos that survived called Monterey Google it FYI. The woman in the audience was Moma Cass of the Mona’s and papas .

Big Mama Thornton wrote and first recorded Ball and Chain. Her version is on youtube if you want to compare. Big Mama also was the first to record Hound Dog (it was written specially for her), which later became a hit for Elvis. Janis has a good number of songs that fall into the "as good as it gets" category.

Ball and Chain was written and I believe recorded as well by American Blues singer Big Mama Thornton, one of Janis's great influences! You are so right when you said she feels her music. Janis always gave everything she had and left it all on the stage. The camera man would keep looking at her legs, the same thing they did and criticized Elvis for! The media and press were not good to her. They would talk negative about her looks, since they were the so called experts ☠but it took a toll. This was the first introduction to the public, her first outdoor concert stage! She killed it! Janis was extraordinary. There was no one like her then and now!!

Janis was relatively unknown at this time. She was only about a year into her professional music career. But she blew everyone away with her rendition of Ball & Chain". Janis Joplin was a one of a kind singer with a unique voice. Sadly we lost her too soon. She was only 27 when she died. She had a lot of great songs such as "Me & Bobby McGee", "Piece Of My Heart", "Cry Baby", "Summertime", "Down On Me", "Maybe", "Little Girl Blue", "Try (Just A Little Bit Harder)", "Get It While You Can", "Bye, Bye Baby", "Move Over", "Mercedes Benz" etc.

"Mama" Cass Elliot of The Mamas And The Papas, and a successful solo artist was obviously surprised and blown away by this performance. Janis truly stole the show at Monterey. She made quite the impression on other famous artists at the festival as well at the audience. This was a festival where artists were making their best efforts to impress the world, even with a bit of competative spirit to top each other. After all, THEY ALL PLAYED FOR FREE! (including Hendrix and the Who*) Legendary performance were the result. And Janis was right on top of the heap. 🤘😄 *except Ravi Shankar, he was the only artist paid

Janis was truly a unique talent. Her studio albums are full of such a variety of songs that showcase her range vocals and emotion. A live video to check out is "Janis Joplin - Try (Live, 1970) Vintage Janis but with a twist. She starts the song with a story she tells the audience that segues perfectly into the song. You get a real feel for her relaxed personality. A must for Janis fans

I get wanting to expose my kid to great(all types of) music, my daughter is 22 & special needs so her musical education is something else. My mother was a bit of a hippie & I remember her making a point to expose me to all types of music & people. I remember mom taking me to tons of concerts all my life, I got to see or at least listen to many different artists which made my musical taste extremely eclectic, especially considering back then people weren’t so hung up on ‘kids’ being in places that they weren’t normally in. I consider myself to be very lucky to have had a mother that felt it was very important for me to be exposed to many different things & people which gave me a greater understanding & acceptance of the world around me.

I grew up in a different time where we had 33, 45, and 78 rpm and if you wanted someone to hear a song you called the radio station and requested it, then called the other person and told them to listen. Even with the lack of sharing technology, my parents raised all of us to appreciate all kinds of music. The local radio had its Classical hour, its Big Band hour, Monday evenings it played the week's Top 40 in order, etc. and the whole family listened to it all. When we kids had money to spend, they let us buy any records we wanted and whoever was first in the living room had control over what got played (as long as nobody was watching TV). I still appreciate all types of music thanks to them.

@@jennhurl My parents were both young adults during WW2 (Dad served from late 1940 thru VE Day and Mom was in college and started teaching in 43) so they lived during the height of the big bands and that remained their favorite music all of their lives, although Mom branched out and enjoyed a lot of pop. Their openness and accepting that times and music change really helped. Growing up in the 60's and 70's was great too because the top 40 included pop, rock, R&B, country, and even standards. Radio wasn't corporatized where each station had to stick to a genre. It was a good time to grow up.

The performance was an add on that day just for him. The band had performed a full set the day before. The great Big Mama Thornton wrote the song. She also wrote Hound Dog, a song that Elvis covered.

This is the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival. It was at this concert that she was first signed to a record deal. Clive Davis signed her after her performance. This song "Ball and Chain" was written by and first recorded by Big Mama Thornton who was one of Janis' influences. Both recordings of this song, One by Janis and the other by Big Mama were released in 1968. Janis was a TRUE blues singer. She sang from a place of very deep hurt and pain and bled it out in every performance. Also the band was not supposed to be in the movie but were so well received after they finished they were asked to come back again for the film. Of course they left the stage and started partying and you can tell just watching the bass guitarist they were actually wasted. Th e woman so impressed in the audience is Mama Cass of the Mamas and the Papas who helped organize this festival. Many modern performers including Stevie Nicks modeled their stage persona from Janis.

I think she is about 24 here, so 3 more years and heroin takes her, 50% pure heroin which she was not aware of. From what I read on it, heroin is usually only about 3% pure when hits the streets, it was strong enough to stop her heart. She had also been clean for several months and they figured it lowered her bodies resistance and contributed to her death.

It wasn't released until after her death. After all these decades I never knew that there was a live version but I stick with the studio. There is however a good live version of Mercedes Benz from this same album.

I was at the Monterey Pop Festival for all 3 days: June 16, 17 & 18 in Monterey, California. My mother was actually the one who got to see the concert, she was 8 months pregnant with me. She was probably one of few people there who wasn’t stoned or tripping on acid because she refused to drink or take any drugs when she was pregnant, so she remembers all 3 days vividly.
