Honey she's living that song all the way down to her soul and vibrating with emotion. That's why they kept showing her feet and how the music was coursing through her. Geraldine Page (a famous and acclaimed stage and screen actress, also an Oscar winner in case you're not familiar with her name) went to see Janis in concert then went backstage to tell her that most performers gave a lot of themselves in their performances but Janis gave EVERYTHING.

Port Arthur, TX favorite daughter...RIP Janis. The close up of the lady in the audience is Mama Cass from The Mama's and the Papas. This was early in Janis' career and Mama Cass said she had heard so much about her she had to see for herself....she was totally shocked. Unfortunately, drug addiction led to an overdose and took Janis from us far too soon. If you guys are gonna do more of her....Bobby Magee is a great one.

"Piece of my Heart" (Studio version) and "Me and Bobby McGee" She died before it was released. Written by Kris Kristofferson. It would become her only solo number one single. Kristofferson didn’t hear Joplin’s version of his song until right after she died in late 1970. “Paul Rothchild, her producer, asked me to stop by his office and listen to this thing she had cut. Afterwards, I walked all over L.A., just in tears. I couldn’t listen to the song without really breaking up,” Kristofferson said.

Janis gave 110% every single time. It always came from deep down inside. Janis was a blues bomb! The media would talk her down about her looks and were always jerks to her. She was always real. Unfortunately, she is one of the 27 club...young talent gone at 27! It's good to see the younger generation listening to her music and bringing her back. If you love real blues that hits your soul, then listen to more Janis! Pearl was her last album and one that showed she was just getting started! Love You Janis!

Janis was a tormented soul who expressed her pain through her music. She was an smart, sensitive, unpopular kid in high school in Port Arthur, Texas (a working class town on the Gulf Coast) where she was bullied for being quirky and not sufficiently pretty. After high school she moved to Austin where she went to UT and frequently sang at a dive called Threadgills (which I remember for their fantastic fried chicken livers and Shiner Beer). From Austin Janis headed to the Bay Area, pursued her blues music full time, got more deeply into drugs, became a superstar after the Monterrey Pop Festival in 1967, and succumbed to her demons in 1970. Though she was unique and extraordinarily gifted, the money and fame and pharmaceuticals simply weren't enough to make her feel loved. RIP, Janis. You're a powerful reminder that we all need to be kinder to one another.

I heard Janis say in an interview that she doesn't sing over the top of the music like a lot of other female singers of her time. She reckoned you have to get under the music. She just loses herself in it and sings with her whole body. I love the way she was always herself - totally real, no pretensions, no makeup even.

I can't believe I hadn't commented on this song to you before. You see, I wasn't at Monterey Pop in June 1967 but I was invited to go by none other than David Crosby and Graham Nash. I met them at Hippie Hill in Golden Gate Park in S.F. We all passed around a joint. They came over because I was wearing a black velveteen shirt with orange satin sleeves and David thought I was in a band. I said "No, but I do want to be a writer." I may have said I wrote poetry. I used to see Janis and Big Brother at the Avalon and Fillmore ballrooms all the time. I was told Big Brother lived a block and a half from my Apt. on Page St. but a music writer from Toronto who specializes in the '60's proved me wrong. They lived two blocks up from me on Page St. itself. This was her signature song. Everyone would be yelling at the band to do it, but of course it always came last. Never have I heard her do it so well. It didn't come across well on her studio recording. Maybe she wasn't consistent in her performances. She did fall off the stage once she got so excited. Always she had a can of Colt 45 or some Southern Comfort. A Chinese friend tried to sell her pot and like what my other dealer friends said she didn't smoke pot. She was from Port Aurthur, Texas which explains her Southern drawl. Sam Phillips, the guitarist was experimenting with the psychedelic sounds and may have tuned his guitar weird on purpose. Two girls I was close two idolized her. One was also a singer and would do her rendition of "Summertime" to much applause. My girlfriend could belt it out but didn't have the rasp in her voice. Rebekah was devastated when she died. Twice I saw Janis buying something off a dealer on Haight Street and it wasn't pot but a bag of white stuff. She gave him a $20.00 which is $200.00 in today's money. My friends would not believe me.

I love when you young folk hear our music. We had raw talent and innovation and creativity. No auto tune, no set style especially in the 60s, just some free wheeling goodness. Watch interviews with her, she is so soft spoken and timid.... her stage presence that she brought to the world. Unfathomable

Isn't it great? No false eyelashes, just natural face and hair, no sexy, low cut, tight dress - just natural talent!

You nailed it. The soul. The deep feeling, the vulnerability, the desperation. Who sings like that today?

This performance is from the documentary film of the 1967 Monterey Pop festival which brought Janis to worldwide attention. Up to then, she was one of the singers of the San Francisco band Big Brother and the Holding Company. She soon became a solo artist and was paired with two other bands before dying at 27 from a heroin overdose. I recommend the pyrotechnic Piecennof My Heart and the wonderful Kris Kristofferson-penned ballad Me and Bobby McGee. The camera lingers on Mama Cass in the audience because the Mamas and the Papas also performed there and John Philips (one of the Papas) was one of the event’s producers.

Janis was a musical Goddess! There is another woman in modern time`s that many are comparing her to Janis, It`s Beth Hart. Check out more of Beth, especially her stuff performed with Joe Bonamassa.

Janis gave Brad goosebumps!!! My heart is melting lol this is a hard song to introduce newbies too because of the high pitch guitar and cracks in her voice. Some folks think it’s nails on a chalkboard 😂 more Janis for Brad!! Cry Baby 😭 cry baby!

Yes, I think he was maybe into it even more than Lex! He really liked it! I was kind of surprised! Just shows you music touches people differently - I didn't imagine this would be something that he'd react to like that to. I love that he did!

Raenelle Fisher is correct, Big Mama Thorton wrote "Ball and chain." She also wrote "Hound Dog" Elvis had a hit with his cover. Janis loved the Blues, Etta James, Billie Holiday & Mama Thorton were big influences on her. Rest In Peace Janis, Thank you Brad & Lex.

I had to smile watching you guys. I'm 76 and grew up on Janis Joplin. Believe me, there was NOTHING prepared about her. Janice Joplin was pure sinew, grizzle, and silk. Her body was plugged into the universal electrical grid. What you saw was a glimpse of passion shock like the world had never witnessed and most likely never will again. Unique is too vague a word to describe Janice Joplin.
