Otis Redding died just short of making the 27 Club. A couple days before he died in a plane crash, he recorded Dock of the Bay, which everybody connected to him advised against. They all hated it, but it turned out to be one of the biggest hits of the 1960s. Truly a great song. Janis was amazing, but a singer who may have had even greater range was Linda Ronstadt. She is still with us, but had to quit singing years ago when she developed Parkinson's Disease. If you haven't played her yet, you might want to try Blue Bayou.

Janis Joplin's bluesy wail was instantly recognizable, whether it was when she was with Big Brother and The Holding Company, or her own solo productions. She was one of those unique shooting stars who blinded you with the intense light of her talent. But like many burnt out way too soon. Her personal demons and a big heart ensured a turbulent personal life in a time of sex, drugs, and rock and roll. I always marvel at singer Diane's reaction to unique and powerful musical voices. Talent instantly recognizes talent, I guess. So now Diane sort of encourages us to over indulge, with less or no consequences with her new sponsor. Why now, when I've spent years training myself to not party as hardy as I occasionally use to, with the resulting painful consequences. Where was this product when I really needed it. That song was off of her album, I got dem ol’ Kozmic blues again mama, which was her third album but her first solo album after she quit Big Brother. Her band on this album is The Kozmic Blues Band which was a manufactured studio band that her label put together with horns added because they wanted Janis to go into a Jazzier direction (even though she made the songs on this album as bluesy as she was allowed) & Janis hated the band & the direction the label was making her go into because she was a blues-rock singer, NOT a jazz singer. When the album flopped, they let her pick out her own band for the next album & she picked some dynamite musicians she called The Full Tilt Boogie Band. They just finished their first album together as a group when Janis died. The last song on that album is an instrumental because Janis died before she could add her vocals to it. So they released it in her memory anyway in 1971. The name of that album was called “Pearl” which was Janis’ nickname.

You have to remember that at the time of Woodstock there had only been one other show that size that was in the South, and it did not get the same kind of press that Woodstock did at that time. I was in northern New York state that summer at the same time they landed on the moon, and I was there for a wedding, but I did not know the show would happen 25 days later, and 100 miles away. I did not know about the show until a week after it happened on TV , and I had returned to St. Louis. Since there had not been a show like this there in New York there was no real playbook on how to manage a show this size, so they muddled through the best the could with all sorts of surprises coming, and a lot of people were stuck on the roads even the musicians. I heard of one band that was suppose to open the show, and they saw the size of the show, and took off as fast as they could, so lots of surprises. I saw Janis on TV a week later, and went the next days, and bought her album Pearl.

Janis was known as the Queen of Blues. I don't think she will ever be replaced. She is one of the few singers who's songs can still cause goosebumps for me... Sadly, drugs tend to end lives early. As The Offspring point out in "Half-Tourism", "Our light that shines strong only lasts for so long". You don't know who Otis Reding is? That is shocking. One of the most important Motown singers and song writers. He died in 1967 at the age of 26 due to a plane crash into a lake (Wisconsin). His biggest hit is "(Sitting on the) Dock of the Bay" but he has so many other good songs. He helped write "Sweet Soul Music" by Arthur Conley using the melody of "Yeah Man" in honor of Sam Cook who wrote said song. A Motown legend.
