This is the performance that brought Janis to the front of the resurgent Blues. You can tell from the live video that she puts very thing she has into the performance. If you watch the live version to the end you can see her appear to skip off the stage.

I'd recommend searching for a live performance. Her "Piece of My Heart" and "Summertime" are classics!! She always put everything into her performances! I was only 18 when both she and Jimi Hendrix passed away. Janis' death hit me in the heart.

Janis had one of the most unique & powerful voices with a lot of grit. Sadly we lost her too soon. She was only 27 when she died. She had a lot of great songs in her short life such as "Piece Of My Heart", "Ball & Chain", "Cry Baby", "Maybe", "Down On Me", "Little Girl Blue", "Try (Just A Little Bit Harder)", "Get It While You Can", "Bye, Bye Baby", "Move Over", "Mercedes Benz" etc.

My favorite line is - '''Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to lose'. Having gone through a divorce and having nothing left but some clothes, and a few other personal things, I totally agree. Nothing left to lose and I don't have to worry about it anymore. So happy and free!

I was in the same class as Janis Joplin at Thomas Jefferson High School in Port Arthur, Texas. When she got famous and I heard she was in the Class of 1960, I had to get out my yearbook to see if I remembered her. Our class was one of the largest Thomas Jefferson classes at around 700. When I saw her photo I didn't remember her because she was a very typical teenager and quite different from the Janis Joplin we all saw at Woodstock and heard on the radio.

In Janice's time, the accumulative affects of addiction were not understood. Nor the discumilate affects. Janice had been off heroine for several months. She decided to have one last hit, as a sort goodbye to it. Not knowing about discumilative affects, she just took her usual old dose. Well, with discumilative affect, her body could no longer cope with that dose. The rest is history and we were deprived of her massive talent. I hope someone is giving her a reassuring hug. Because that's all she ever really wanted.

Janis was one of a kind, and gone way too soon. Unfortunately she died a few years before I really was into music, but at about the age of 15, I found her "Pearl" album in a 2nd hand store. I have much more of her music now, but that will always be my favourite. Incredibly unique, and there are no bad choices by her.

✅ You have to hear her full force voice in songs like "Piece Of My Heart". Another song of the kind you just reviewed that has her more natural voice is "Mercedes Benz". But again, her power is in so many songs that I hope you will give an ear to. She was around at the close of the 60s and early 70s. Vietnam had been going on for ten years, Monterey Pop festival in San Fran was where she debuted. She embodied the raw San Fran hippie vibe, yet she was a Texas girl who was like no other. And, her backing band was no slouch either. I was in high school, and it was a sad day when she passed, and when Jimmy Hendrix passed. They were both icons of the same era.

Next you should do her take on "Cry Baby". Janis pushed the envelope, and she did heroin, but wasn't addicted. She just got hold of some that night that was MUCH more pure than she'd ever had before, and inadvertantly did too much. She was so looking forward to the issue of this album, because she knew the greatness she and her band were putting down. She was due to record the vocals to "Buried Alive in the Blues" in two days, and that would have finished the album. Powers that be decided to issue the record with that song an instrumental.

I heard a story that Kris Kristofferson had an affair with Janis. He didn't know she had recorded the song until after she had died. He could not listen to the song without breaking down in tears. Finally he sat down and played the song over and over again until he was out of tears. I find it kind of fitting for the times and the people involved.

From the Kentucky coal mines (me, fifth grade ) to the California Sun (me, 67)! I was fortunate enough to have an older hippie sister who took me to my first concert in 5th grade. Yep,,,Janis! I've been in love ever since. Note: In the span of about a year we lost three great musicians to drugs; Janis, Jimi (Hendrix) and Jim (Morrison), also around that time the Beatles started their dismantle. God only knows where Rock would be now if those icons had survived. Allow me to suggest one from each: Janis-Cry Baby (Live) yellow dress, Jimi (Room Full of Mirrors) Jim-The Doors (L.A. Woman) and Beatles (Oh, Darlin')

“Windshield wipers slapping time” were words composer Chris christopherson wrote in a storm piloting a helicopter on a trip from a rig in the Gulf of Mexico back to land in Baton Rouge, Louisianna. Chris knew Janis as a friend he learned after her death she recorded it. It was way a long time after her death before he even could listen to it. Cris had the last name McGee but not the first name. Bobby was the name of his producers female secretary. Since Chris was male and straight Bobby would be female if he sang it. It of course sounds like Janis is singing about a boyfriend. Chris starred in the second or thrird a star is born with Barbara Streisand. He also wrote and recorded lord hep me Jesus a country song with gospel blues words but in the video of the song he’s smoking a cigarette…very controversial at the time. Really good song.

Somewhere on KZbin there's an audio recording of Janis, before she was famous, singing old blues songs with Jorma Kaukonnen, of Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna fame, playing acoustic guitar. It was recorded in someone's apartment in San Francisco. It is really too bad they never recorded professionally together. Janis had an amazing feel for blues and soul. I agree with others below, I love this song, but her best stuff is the early recordings with Big Brother and the Holding Company.

Kris Kristofferson's original was a straight-ahead country song. Janis recast it in her very special style. It's a truly great cover of a truly great original. It would not surprise me to find out that Janis agreed with the anti-war movement, but that never played in her songs. They were almost all about relationships. As others have said, you need to listen to more of Janis's songs. "Ball and Chain" and "Piece of My Heart" would fill out your view of Janis Joplin.
